Wisdom Walks In Circles:

Snowy Morning

by Margaret Lewis
The first snow of December blankets a pile of leaves at the curb, yet to be carried off by street cleaning trucks. The old oak, towering above the yard, still clings to her brown leaves, so the snow feels early, unexpected, a surprise. My Christmas bulbs blew a fuse, darkening the evening landscape during this season of light. Such intricate wiring of my electrical masterpiece lays hidden under a snowy carpet. How to find the short circuited connection within the tangles of wire?

A steady drip from a leaking skylight thuds upon a porcelain toilet tank as melting snow finds its stream of transformation from crystalline to fluidity. Ah, the sights and sounds of the season!

These annoyances aside, I find an expansive aura of peace in the white crested snow that muffles the echoes of passing cars. White icing on evergreen branches, and my garden angel dressed in plaid taffeta ribbon, now cocooned in cotton. It is all so pretty.

We spin on the axis of this great blue globe, shoveling our driveways, attempting to create order out of the whims of nature. Snowfall can be an act of beauty or a headache. It is always our choice of perception.
World of White

A white world offers the purity of second chances. For me, snow covered ground signals the inner instinct to hibernate and dream my life anew. I watch from warm windows for changes in the sky, passing birds, tracks in snow that offer imprints of movement amid the stillness. Fresh fallen snow signals a pause in the drumbeat of activity. The deep breath of peace.

Pure white stimulates a re-imagining within the psyche that can result in a re-imaging of our selves. Out with the old year, in with the new. Can we cast off the now dried and loose skin of experience, like the serpent that seeks deep caverns within the womb of earth? I look to the sky still pregnant with snow and feel the weight of anticipation. My exterior numbed with cold inertia motivates a silent retreat to the inner pulse of heated dreams.

In ancient times, the sky was a compass, a clock and calendar. The holiday season was perceived by the ancients as a time of great change and renewal. Our winter solstice approaches, the day of shortest sunlight, which also marks the moment when the growing sunlight returns. It is a pause. What is known in the astronomical milieu as a 'standstill'. For three days, the Sun appears motionless before beginning its northern journey.

Imagine our holiday season if we were to celebrate with a pause in activity. What would it feel like to stand still and reflect? What wonders would we distill in such receptivity?

Forging the Trail

The ancient sky watchers found a correlation between our earthly lives and the elliptical movement of the planets and the sun. Seasonal changes and sky markers were celebrated with initiations. For the ancients, the Winter Solstice represented the Great Birth. Such an initiation repositions the inner self and offers you a new perspective that is hopeful, clear, and filled with intention. This is what the mystics meant by seeing with 'new eyes'.

The Desana natives of the Amazon perceive the sky as a giant brain with two hemispheres that are divided by the Milky Way. Their beliefs guide them to align their brains so that they resonate with the cosmic mind. They link up with the celestial cycle's high holy days of the equinoxes and solstices. They look to the heavens for guidance and find messages of divinity in nature.

The Mayan Calendar is forecasted to end on the Winter Solstice of 2012. Researchers such as John Major Jenkins predict that the elliptical path of the sun will cross the center of the Milky Way on this winter solstice, which marks the end of an age and the rebirthing of the sun.

Some say this is demonstrative of a rebirth of the solar principle within the self, a re-lighting of the candle within. This time of year marks a moment of reflection on the quality of our inner light, calling for a re-imagining of the self.

What is being birthed or reawakened? An interesting question to ponder on a snowy morning. I listen in sync with the drip of melting ice.

Many blessings to you and yours for this season of light! May your inner light shine with all the brilliance of your spirit.
