Malachite
“Peacock-stones”

by Raven
Malachite was well known to the Ancient Egyptians as a protective stone, often carved as an amulet or scarabs. The stone is believed to be still evolving and will be one of the most important healing stones of the new millennium.

Malachite is a copper ore. Its banded light and dark green designs are one-of-a-kind, gives it a unique ornamental quality with distinctive light and dark green bands. This soft stone takes high polish but dulls quickly with wear and carved in shapes, tumbled stones and cabochons. Russia has large deposits of Malachite and used the stone as an architectural treatment. The room of the Imperial Palace is lined with Malachite slabs and the Russian Orthodox churches features massive malachite columns and altars fashioned of the gem.

Malachite’s crystalline forms are rare and recently widely available to the average mineral collector. Its unique habit is it’s fine acicular crusts and tufts. At times appearing as a mat of thin hairs or as a carpet of green velvet. Another unusual habit is its stalactitic habits. Malachite has a mineral impostor called pseudomalachite. Pseudomalachite is a copper phosphate that has a massive crystal habit and color that are very similar to malachite's habit and color, although the two minerals have different structures. Pseudomalachite means “false malachite” in Latin and is very rare compared to malachite.

Malachite is an impostor of its own - it frequently pseudomorphs the closely associated mineral azurite. A pseudomorph is a mineral specimen where the original mineral has been chemically replaced by another mineral, but the outward appearance is still retained. Pseudomorph means “false shape” in Latin parlance. The transformation is fascinating and sometimes leaves a nearly perfect azurite crystal shape that is actually malachite. Often the transformation is incomplete and leaves a blue/green mineral specimen unlike any other. A gem trade name is used for ornamental stones with this combination called Azur-malachite.

Many beautiful specimens of malachite contain special combinations with other minerals. Such combinations are some of the most colorful mineral assortments in the mineral world. They include such stunningly colorful minerals as dark blue azurite, sparkling black mottramite, baby blue chrysocolla, or rusty red limonite. So common is malachite that it is associated with almost every secondary copper mineral whether they are carbonate minerals or not. Malachite is found with many rare copper silicates such as; halides, phosphates, sulfates and carbonates.

Egyptians called Malachite “Mafek” as well as other green stones. It is named for the Greek word for "mallow" - a green herb and determined that the stone’s deep green colors resembled the leaves of the mallow plant.

History, Myth, Legend and Lore:

Egyptians, 4000 B.C. – mined stone between Mt. Sinai and the Suez – carved into amulets and scarabs and used as protective stone for children. When tied to a cradle, all evil was kept away and the child slept soundly. Engraving the sun’s image protects the wearer from the spells of the evil eye. The sun serves as natural enemy to darkness and protection against venomous creatures. Egyptians hieroglyphs describe malachite as an integral part of their deities’ existence.

The stone is thought to have been the: “Green bed of the sun, Horus on his green and the malachite lakes in which the gods were sometimes said to dwell”.

Egyptians Text – mentions a ring of Mafek which later period in Egyptian history Mafek maybe denoted as beryl.

Mosaic Times – in an effort to determine the Shoham Stone used, the conjecture of J.L. Myers were Malachite’s seems to be in its favor as Malachite material was known to Ancient Egyptians.

Betona, Italy – Malachite was worn as an amulet to protect the wearer from the spells of the Evil Eye. Such stones were called “peacock-stones” which has resemblance in color and marking to the peacock’s tail – usually triangular mounted in silver. As a proof of the superstitious belief – in Etruscan Tomb @ Chusi found a triangular, perforated piece of glass, each angle terminating in an eye formed of glass of various colors. On many of the amulets fabricated in Italy for protection against the dreaded “jettatura” or against the spell of the Evil Eye then the cock’s figure is carved. In ancient times, the cock assures the protection of the sun god, and his crowing was regarded as an inarticulate hymn of praise to the deities.

Middle Ages – saw an expansion of the ancients’ beliefs in the stones’ power. As an amulet (1) would turn aside fainting spells (2) prevent hernia (3) prevent injury from falls (4) powdered and mixed with milk, served as a tonic for colic and cardiac pain (5) relieved cramps and muscle aches when applied directly to the body (6) stops blood flow when mixed with honey and applied to the wound

The Speculum Lapidum of 1502 - Italian Physician, Camillus Leonardus continues to advise of Malachite’s value to new mothers – defend infants from adverse casualties. Modern midwives in Bavaria still prescribe a piece of malachite strung on the necklaces to relieve teething pain.

Modern gem therapists – suggest the stone as a protection from newer hazards and worn as a guard against the radiation generated by florescent lights, computers, x-ray machines and microwaves. It is also helpful in the treatment of asthma, arthritis, swollen joints, tumors and growths.
