The Epicurean Tarot
Recipes to Nourish Your Body, Mind, and Spirit

Author: Corrine Kenner
Artist: Pamela Coleman Smith
Recolored by: Mary Hanson-Roberts
U.S. Games Systems Inc.
2001
ISBN #1-57281-254-0

"The “Epicurean Tarot” is a deck that I have gifted to other people, but never to myself. I decided that it was time that I did so, and was very pleased with my decision. The deck used in this project is the “Universal Waite Tarot”, artwork by Pamela Coleman Smith, re-colored by Mary Hanson-Roberts. Combined are the traditional imagery of the Tarot with 78 different recipes … each recipe symbolizing in some manner the meaning within the card.

Each card in this deck shows the Tarot card image on the left hand side of the card, with a brief description of the card under it. The right hand two thirds of the card shows the recipe, listing the ingredients, along with instructions for cooking and serving. Each recipe holds four to six servings. Through the recipes, we take a fresh look at the Tarot, and at how it can be put to work in our life. It is meant to be “food for thought”.

In her section on the Tradition of Tarot Cooking, Kenner recommends centering yourself and meditating before shopping for the ingredients and doing the cooking. This is a good thought at all times for any type of cooking, as the energy surrounding us as we cook goes into the food, and we want it to be loving, joyous energy. She also recommends cleansing the kitchen thoroughly, and making sure that you will be free of interruptions and distractions.

When pulling the cards, Kenner recommends keeping them in the upright position. Once they are drawn, they need to be placed where they will not have food spilled on them. She also recommends avoiding negative interpretations. After you have finished cooking it is recommended that you make notes on the cards. From personal experience, I might add that this is best done after the food has been consumed, as you will have more free time.

There are several different recommendations for how to use the cards: in active meditation, to better understand the traditional Tarot, place yourself into the essence of the cards as you are cooking, preparing a magickal meal intended to draw specific qualities to you, have a Tarot pot luck, or throw a progressive dinner party.

The 35 page companion book includes an introduction on Tarot and cooking, recommendations on how to use the cards, a text only section for each card (listed by card name and recipe name)with a short description of the card, how the card might appear in a reading, and a short personal take on the card.

At the end of the book there are instructions for a Three Card Spread (with variations listed as: Past Meal/Present Meal/Future Meal, Breakfast/Lunch/Dinner, and Main Course, Side Dish, Desert, as well as the traditional Celtic Cross Spread (also named the Cook’s Spread). There are listings for Tarot resources and cookbooks.

The cards themselves are 5” by 7”, of sturdy, good quality, glossy card stock. The back of the cards shows a 1⁄4” white border, followed by a thin black border. In each of the four corners is an icon representing one of the four suits, In the upper middle of the card we see crossed knives … one serrated, one straight. Under this we se a large, covered saucepan. Under that we see a smaller saucepan and a skillet.

The recipe for the Fool is “The Fool’s Caramelized Nuts”, with the following description under the card:

“In most Tarot decks, the Fool is pictured about to take a leap of faith. He dares to live the life most of us only dream about. He is adventurous, unafraid, and unashamed to look a little nuts.”

Some of the other recipes are: The Magician’s Four Suit Stir Fry, The Empress’ Harvest Wheat Bread, The Hierophant’s Holiday Ham, The Hermit’s Floating Island, Wheel of Fortune Pizza, The Devil’s Deviled Eggs, The Sun’s Sunflower Seed Cookies, Judgement’s Angel Food Cake, King of Swords London Broil, the Page of Wands Chiles Rellenos, the Nine of Cups Cheese Soup, Seven of Cups Fantasy Fudge, the Knight of Pentacles Chocolate Almonds, and the Ace of Pentacles Quiche Lorraine.

This is a delightful deck … allowing the reader to view the Tarot from a new perspective, to see a very clever use of food associations, and the ability to try out new recipes. This is a great deck to keep in everyone’s kitchen! A nice bonus … the cards and companion book come in a sturdy cardboard box fashioned after a recipe card box!

The Röhrig Tarot Book
review by Bonnie Cehovet, TE

Author: Carl W. Röhrig
Illustrator: Francesca Margano-Fritz
Translated by: Howard Fine
U.S. Games Systems, Inc.
1993, 1997
ISBN #1-57281-071-8

“The Röhrig Tarot Book” is the 160 page, softcover glossy companion book to the “Röhrig Tarot”.

The book begins with three short paragraphs on “What Is Tarot?”, “What Help Can Tarot Bring?”, and “The Origin of Tarot”. From the book:

What Help Can Tarot Bring?

The tarot can help you find the key to the images stirring within you. The twenty-two cards of the Major Arcana of the tarot represent a mosaic of the different aspects of the ego. When a particular card profoundly touches a corresponding aspect within you, you will recognize your dormant potential. You will become the creator and master of your own imagination and learn to consciously shape your life from your inner depths. The cosmic and divine laws are then fulfilled according to the maxim “as inside so outside.” You will reflect these laws and be an integral part of them.”

The cards are presented with a full page, glossy color scan, without borders, and without the name of the card (which appears across the top border). The name of the card is listed on the right hand side of the scan. Each card is discussed in general (along traditional lines), and then in particular to the imagery on the “Röhrig Tarot”, and the associations between the Hebrew letter and the Rune symbol. Preceding the text is a short quote, such as the one for the Fool: “Life is not a problem to be solved, but a reality to be experienced. Buddha.”

The Court Cards are presented with keywords only. From the book: “Princess of Wands: Elementary, female, fiery energy. Impulsiveness. Passion and optimism. Magnetic sexual attractive power. Instability. Capricious moods. Emphasis on emotions. Short-lived ability to surrender one-self to one particular thing. Uneasiness and sexual yearning.”

There is a brief introduction to the Minor Arcana, followed by the cards, which are presented with keywords only. From the book: “Ace of Wands – The onset, the primal beginning, the creative principle, courage and determination.”, “Ten of Cups – Utter satiety, harmony, agreement and love. Success in career and family life. Material riches and being understood.”, “Nine of Swords – Fanaticism and self-punishment. Cruelty toward oneself. Nightmares and self blame.”, “Four of Disks – Material power, exaggerated need for security, clinging to existing notions.”

At the end of the book there are three spreads presented, with examples: The Cross, a five card spread; The Seven Cards, a seven card spread; and The Partner Spread, another seven card spread.

The book is nicely done, with glossy pages and full page color scans of the cards. It is not in-depth, with the exception of the specific imagery for the Major Arcana. I feel that this companion book has value, if only to show the thought process behind the author and artist.
