Astrology:

The First Lady Aspect—One More Astrological Technique That WON’T Predict our Next President

by Donna Cunningham, MSW
Note: This is an excerpt from Donna’s ebook, An Astrological Guide to Self-Awareness, available at http://www.moonmavenpublications.com.

It’s often a little embarrassing when astrologers are asked by the media to predict the outcome of a presidential election. With some notable exceptions, no matter which technique or school of astrology is used, our track record is pretty dismal. Given that there are only two choices, a flip of a coin is about as likely to be right! And yet, like lemmings rushing to the sea, we don’t seem to be able to resist making those predictions.

Though not a mundane astrologer, I became fascinated by the unfolding of this unprecedented 2008 election and was seduced into thinking I alone had THE right technique. The rosy glow of that certainty lasted for all of one evening. A new edition of my book on outer planet aspects to Venus and Mars, The Outer Planets and Inner Life, Volume 2 was in process. In updating the book, what once more stood out was a pattern in the charts of First Ladies from Eleanor Roosevelt onward. Almost all of them had aspects between Pluto and Venus, Pluto and Mars, or both. The pattern was so marked that I’d begun calling them the First Lady Aspects. Could these aspects possibly give us a clue as to who’ll be moving into the White House come January?

The lists of Venus-Pluto aspects generated by AstroDataBank included many women who married well in order to do some dynasty building. They’re also seen in the charts of other political like Maria Shriver and among the British Royals—Elizabeth II, Sarah, Duchess of York, and Sophie Rhys-Jones. Political savvy, combined with personal charm, gives these folks the capacity to hobnob with the movers and shakers. The trines like Pat Nixon and Betty Ford seem to do especially well, with an eye to position. They may not be your idea of glamour girls, but apparently know how to keep their men happy.

Venus-Pluto women make good helpmeets who know how to be assets to their husband’s careers and to hobnob with the rich and famous. They also seem able to turn a blind eye to spouses’ headline-making infidelities, possibly because the perks that accompany their social positions are too hard to give up. In arenas outside marriage, the various aspects grant an easy capacity to form friendships and alliances with the powers that be. The table below shows the birth dates of president’s wives since the 1940s, along with any aspects between Pluto and Venus or Mars.

It’s interesting, isn’t it, that Venus-Pluto aspects were more dominant early in the sequence, but Mars-Pluto aspects have become more and more prominent as time goes on? The position of women, in general, has evolved in recent decades, so that more women are running for office or are active in their husband’s campaigns. There were persistent speculations in certain administrations—especially during the Clinton years —about the First Lady’s role in decision making, though it never got to the point of appointing one to a Cabinet position. Hillary Clinton has both aspects—a close conjunction of Mars and Pluto in Leo tightly squared by Venus in Scorpio. She’s making history as the first First Lady to run for president.

Eager to find out who’ll win this hotly contested and crucial race, I looked for First Lady aspects in charts of candidates’ marriage partners. I looked first at Michelle Obama, born 1/17/1964, time unknown. An admirable force in her own right, she has neither a Venus-Pluto nor a Mars-Pluto aspect. As an Obama devotee, I was at that point still cocky enough about the technique to be desolated by that discovery. I next looked at the chart of Bill Clinton, born 8/19/46. With his typical charm and wit, he jokes that if Hillary were elected, he’d be known as the First Laddy. He has a close sextile between Venus and Pluto, but that hardly seems conclusive. Cindy McCain was born 5/20/54, time unknown. She has Mars sesquiquadrate Pluto, again not the strongest of aspects.

No real answers here, are there? Maybe the technique is flawed—it happens. Or maybe this election is so unprecedented that astrological indicators, such as they might be, are worth very little. Maybe we’re at a hinge of history in which our fate—and the fate of the world—is yet to be determined. With the transiting Uranus-Saturn opposition exact on Election Day, who knows what twists and turns await us. Stay tuned!

Donna Cunningham,
Astrologer
& Healer

Donna Cunningham is an internationally respected astrologer and the author of 19 books on metaphysical topics.
She has been an astrologer for almost 40 years.

Her newest career direction is to lead writing seminars for those who wish to write about astrology, metaphysics or self-help subjects. See her summer offerings at www.moonmaven

Donna Cunningham has a dual background in astrology and psychotherapy, with a Masters in Social Work from Columbia University and over 30 years experience as a professional astrologer. She considers doing the astrology charts of children to be a sacred trust. It is a way of knowing who these Indigo children are on their own terms rather than as their families, teachers, and society expect them to be.

In these sessions, she focuses on typical childhood concerns such as family and peer relationships, the best educational approaches, and the child's special gifts and abilities. She can be reached for consultations at (503)291-7891, by email, or at her web page. Ask about her special rate for children's charts.

Donna is also co-editor of Vibration and a frequent contributor. She has written fourteen books on astrology and other metaphysical topics, including her Flower Remedies Handbook. Astrologers who want to know the special considerations involved in doing children's charts can read the chapter on this topic in Donna's text, The Consulting Astrologer's Guidebook.

Listed in several Who’s Who volumes, she has given seminars on astrology around the world and won the prestigious Regulus Award at the 1998 UAC.
