Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot
Follow Your Bliss
|
|

Two months in a row, I seem to feel the need to repeat a similar message. Could it be that this particular message is not getting through to my readers? Could it be that we are so consumed with the daily grind that we refuse to heed the warnings?
Being responsible is a good thing. We know enough irresponsible people in our lives that this particular quality is valued. We take care of work, we pay our bills, and we attend to family and friends. We do all of the things that we know that we should do. However, do we do the things that we want to do?

Our card this month is the Knight of Cups from the Ethyrial Tarot ©. We see water propelling down the side of a hill and bouncing in and around a cup. Knights are about action. This particular knight has always brought to mind the key phrase, “follow your bliss”.
Water equates with emotions. No doubt, the force behind this particular water is something with which to contend. Sometimes emotions can overwhelm us. However, there are times in our lives when we deny ourselves the things that most move us. We refuse either to acknowledge or to give place to something that would make us feel more complete. Why do we do this? Usually, there is something in our minds that tells us that our desires are wrong or selfish. Where did these perceptions originate? A good guess might be childhood. Another could be our own ideas bouncing around in our heads that have yet to be worked upon. With life being as hectic as it can be in this modern age, it is easy to lose sight of the important “stuff”. Oh, we are very good at making sure that the kids have their lunch money and that the partner is getting enough sleep. Still, when the focus turns to us, we slough it off as unimportant.
Were I to compare this to an alternative lifestyle, many of you might think that there is no need for the word “alternative” as gays and lesbians are now finding a place in our culture that need not be considered as anything but “normal”. Yet, not that long ago, a gay man would not even consider coming out. Eventually, the community realized that the only way that they could be happy was to be who they were. They chose to follow their bliss and find a complete life rather than to live in the shadows. Even now, there are other individuals whose lives take a slightly different turn than mainstream Ozzy & Harriet. Some still live in the shadows for fear of what backlash would surely come were they to reveal their own individual pursuit of happiness.
If we can accept these individuals and their lust for life, why can’t we honor our own? And why, may I ask, is “lust” considered a bad word? Puritanism seems to have crept into this word and stolen its power. Lust currently seems to be associated with “bad” sexual practices. My thesaurus has “thirst” and “hunger” as synonyms for lust. When we are thirsty, we drink. When we are hungry, we eat. Yes, we might not interrupt the meeting to announce that we are off to satiate our grumbling tummy, but we usually do not hinder ourselves when we need to satisfy this natural need. And, yes, I am saying that lust can be a need. According to Dictionary.com, one definition for lust is “…a passionate or overmastering desire or craving…” I like the word “passionate”. I think that far too many of us have lost our passion.
Using the same reference, one definition for passion is “…any powerful or compelling emotion or feeling…” I will agree that there is a time and place for everything. What I am trying to explain this month is that we are neglecting to make the time for our passions. When was the last time that you seduced your significant other? Have you cast aside those romantic notions? How long has it been since you stopped what you were doing to enjoy some simple pleasure, such as the proverbial smelling of the roses? We, as a race, have so tuned out the life around us that we no longer harbor the passions that we once did.
The Knight of Cups calls us back to those moments of feeling. If you are walking and the wind is blowing, stop cursing the mess it is making of your hair and feel that wind as it flows over your face. There is a sensual-ness to such moments. When you take your next shower, enjoy how the water feels as it hits your skin. Listen to the birdsong when you rise rather than jumping out of the bed in a hurry to begin the duties of the day. Stroke that cat as it walks under your feet, trying to get your attentions. Life is filled with moments that can give you a little lift if you will only take the time and energy to experience them.
June allows many of us the opportunity to enjoy the sunshine and spend time outdoors. What better time is there to get in touch with our inner Knight of Cups than right now? Spend the time to follow your bliss. Allow yourself to take pleasure in whatever it is that moves you. It takes a bit of practice to experience life rather than just rush through it. However, I guarantee that you will never once regret the smell of that flower or the touch of your loved one’s lips. Live each day as if it were your last. If you were on your deathbed, what would you regret? I doubt that any of us would be sorry that we did not work more or spend more time away from home and those things that we love. No, instead we would take account of those missed magic moments.
The Japanese Samurai learn to live as if their life is already forfeit. They embrace their death and thus, it holds no more power over them. It takes this kind of face-to-face encounter with our own mortality in order to truly begin to live. Rather than wait for the universe to provide you with some life-altering moment, might it not be wiser to find this enlightenment ourselves?
As we begin a new month, let us take the time to embrace our limited time on this earth. As we do, we can begin to measure the value of things, as they should be seen. Let this be the beginning of your Knight of Cups life. Live your life, do not just survive it. Follow your bliss and you will find that life is much more worth the living.

Gigi Miner is a minister, ordained by the Universal Life Church, and has a Doctorate of Motivation from the same.
“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.
Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.
Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.
Gigi has written articles for various newsletters, including Tarot Celebrations, World Tarot Network, and Gateway to Tarot. She has released a book entitled, “Light-of-Day Tarot & Dream Work,” which is available at www.lulu.com/ladyfogg.
Her two novels, "Card Shark" & "The Fallen" are available at all online bookstores or by visiting:
