Our Evolutionary Purpose
Our calling is to a sacred vocation. We’re here to bring Spirit into human form, to be ‘technicians of the soul.’ We remember it not, however, and this is our oh-so-very-human plight.
When we committed to come to earth and take on this sacred process of incarnation, never did we dream we would fall so soundly asleep. Nor writhe in such a pit of human suffering! We thought we’d undertake this mission with a strong and heartfelt remembrance that we are spiritual beings, here on our Creator’s business each doing our part to spiritualize matter as individual souls living in human bodies. However, we fell asleep, not realizing our “spiritual blindness” has been part of the Divine Plan. In order to be fully human, and totally immerse ourselves in the human condition, we had to completely forget our true spiritual heritage. Otherwise, we would have stayed somewhat removed and could never really know what it is to be human through and through. On a creation planet like Earth, we can only truly know something by being it, but fully taking it on through our bodies, hearts, and minds. The way we bring Spirit into humanity is by purifying the bloodlines and eventually cleansing our species of all its mistaken notions of how to be, from the DNA we’re born with, all the way to our mental attitudes.
This is a brand new evolutionary process, one that will bring heaven to earth, that often-mentioned Fifth Dimension, in which our next state of being as consciousness unfolds. We’ve already been mineral, plant, and animal, and have brought them each to perfection. And we’re now in the process of completing the Fourth Kingdom in nature, by actualizing our full human potential. And until we complete the human kingdom, we’re to stay committed to bringing divine Love and Wisdom to all our human experiences. Then, it’s superhuman we’re intended to be. This Fifth Kingdom in nature, we cannot know until we actually become it. In other words, we co-create our new species by being it.
But now, look at us! We’re so stuck in the human condition, so trapped in our past storylines, we believe we are our personal and societal dramas. And we’ve forgotten completely who we are and have lost touch with our spiritual purpose for coming here. Even our religions have failed to teach us this.
So now, let’s remember: Our psyches are the human Soul’s mirrored reflection. The word ‘psyche’ means soul in Greek. But our mirror is fogged with humanity’s ignorance and unredeemed ways. So each of us, as an individual aspect of the one Soul of Humanity, carries some part of this distortion within us and in our family chains. So we purify the human process by taking it on, suffering through the error, and thereby making it conscious to correct it. This creative process is our birthright as divine beings. So here we are awakening and remembering that we are spiritual beings learning to be human, not human beings trying to become spiritual!
Becoming a Soul-Infused Personality:
Our Next Right Step
The good news is that many today are awakening from this long, long sleep state. A small group are now peeking out from behind the veil of forgetfulness, checking to see if it’s okay to come out from hiding. This is our soul.
The human Soul is the mediator between Spirit and matter. Matter is the vehicle for the manifestation of soul on this plane, and soul is the vehicle on a higher plane for the manifestation of Spirit. The soul is the quality which every element or form manifests. It is that subtle something which distinguishes every form from every other form. It’s what makes a rose a rose, not a cauliflower, in the plant kingdom. And in our human kingdom, it’s what makes one person different from another in appearance and character. Spirit, soul, matter. Three levels of Reality that interact to make us whole. This is the Holy Trinity of life.
Now, your soul is twinned: it is both divine and human, both masculine and feminine, depending on which way it turns. When looking upward, the spiritual Soul becomes the feminine principle for the masculine Logos. When looking downward, the soul becomes the masculine beloved god Eros, for our feminine human Psyche.
The soul is light. It is consciousness. It has no form. When you bring something to light you’re in your soul awareness. It sees through the eyes of love and understanding, and feels from the heart, and delights in all aspects of physical humanness. The soul cares deeply for its human counterpart, the human psyche. And it honors the human ego to which it must be dependent in order to be safe here in the outer world of form. The ego is concretized spirit. It knows the ways of this world. It figures out how to function here by following the laws of physics and society’s materialistic rules. It’s a king in the outer world. The soul is vulnerable here unless a healthy ego can guide it into the ways of the human world. It’s a mistake to hate the ego or think of it as evil. We all know that without a healthy functioning ego, we’d be living in back wards of hospitals, unable to tie our shoes! But the ego can only look outward; it has not idea of how to live the inner life. So it must marry the soul in order to express its rightful place in our make-up. It must sacrifice its egoistic ways and become a soul-infused personality.
You’ll know when your soul is in the driver’s seat: It shines through your physical senses with more intensity than does your ego self. When colors are brighter, smells are delicious, or your heart is on fire with compassion, or when you’re having a powerful inspiration, or a sacred revelation, you can bet your soul is embodied in you. So take note, and see how soul-conscious you already are. This is your essence, your core Self overtaking your life.
We awaken through "soul events" those unusual times when we spontaneously enter a higher state that lifts us into a "peak experience," where we see the sacred or the big picture all at once -- usually in crisis, and only for a moment or two. This happened to me when I was twenty-nine during a clinical near-death experience. I’d been hospitalized during a life-threatening hemorrhage. At one point, when the doctors thought I was past the crisis, I awakened on the ceiling watching myself bleed to death with calm concern. I was having an out-of-body experience, which often accompanies death. "You don’t want to go back in that body, do you?" I said to myself. And there was neither self-pity nor fear, only compassion for that young woman lying helplessly on that bed. Then, in what seemed to be only an instant, I thought of my eight-year-old diabetic son who depended on me for his care. And as though the thought itself propelled me, I was once more back in my body and the doctor and several nurses were there saving my life.
That same day, while still in and out of this reality, I was visited by a Being who looked to me like Jesus. (I have no idea who he really was.) While gently gazing at me from what looked like a hole in the wall (I now believe it was a hologram), he telepathically communicated with me. He said, "Quit trying to take yourself out; you have a mission and you will be guided."
It was eleven years until my next "soul event" occurred that helped me remember my purpose here and begin to manifest it as an author and psycho-spiritual guide. These soul times do not happen all that often, but they are living us upon a larger canvass where our real life is playing out.
If you are one who is awakening now, some of the symptoms will be: You no longer fit into mainstream reference groups too well. And even some of your dearest friends may think you are ‘losing it.’ You will also find that you are bored with what most people turn on to, or maybe even with what used to turn you on. Things just feel different now. What preoccupies your mind are questions like: Who are we? Where did we come from? What is our purpose here? What is my life’s work? Do I have any power over my future? Is there really some kind of God in charge? Some of you feel you need a spiritual group or a spiritual guide. Some of you may have lost interest in organized religion and are seeking another way.
Spiritual is not the same as religion. Spirituality can take many differing forms. The word "spirit" has been so abused in our culture, I’d like to define spirit the way Jungian John Hitchcock does, as a pulsating energy, an internal shaping force that moves us toward the sacred. Spirit is a transcendent function that continually pulls us forward, forever renewing us, and keeping us on course. When we can let spirit into our felt awareness, we feel "inspired," a thrill that makes us know we are heading Home.
We follow our inner visions and dreams of how to bring heaven to earth. These images appear in our minds spontaneously, or outwardly as synchronistic meaningful events, beyond our ego’s intellectual control. It is through these inner longings, glimmers, inspirations, and visions of the holy that we continually see pieces of a divine Plan unfolding here, our bigger story, so that we don’t get too caught up in our personal melodramas and again fail to remember our purpose here. This is spirituality-in-action, and if we commit to this way of living, we enter the sacred Path of Return that will guide us Home.
As spiritual beings we would never run off-course if we didn’t have obstacles in the way of our natural spiritual state. These obstacles are usually emotional or mental attachments, ways we get "hooked" that cause us to over-react in uncentered ways. If we can get into that tiny space between the action (the stimulus) and the reaction (our imbalanced, uncentered response), we can catch ourselves in the moment and prevent the predicament we create by our imbalance. For this, we need our Observer Self, our inner higher mind that stays non-attached and able to see the bigger picture.
Using your Observer Self every time you feel yourself getting into an emotional state over something will help keep you aligned with Spirit. You can nip your emotional reactivity in the bud if you will practice this. Keeping a journal and writing in it from your higher mind on a regular basis is a good way to stay centered in your true Self as you walk through your days. In living with this holistic soul awareness, you’ll remember a great psycho-spiritual truth:
"The Self, your incarnated soul, is greater than its conditions!"
