Wisdom Walks In Circles:
Feeling the Invisible
|
|
 |
by Margaret Lewis |

When I visit the ancient Native American mounds of Ohio, I sense the unseen energy, the spirit of these sacred places, watching me. I've grown accustomed to this feeling of being followed by invisible eyes. Like sitting with a long term companion, there's no need to entertain with conversation or purposeful interaction. We bask together in the song of nature, where words are replaced with the call of the wind and the songbirds, happily chirping their daily round.
Lately, I've taken my camera on visits to the mounds. Being an amateur photographer, I simply point and shoot at whatever looks good in the moment. One sunny morning, I wandered down the muddy bank of Brush Creek, winding along the forest floor below Serpent Mound. Snapping happily, I came upon a little brown snake, hidden in the photo I took. Why, when I trained my lens upon the tree roots, could I not see this snake?
The little brown snake is one with the natural landscape, blending into the environment. My mind interpreted it as a stick, a wavy wand fallen from the tree branches above. This hidden image within the photo fills me with wonder. As a city dweller unaccustomed to the sights of the completely natural world, how much of what surrounds me do I truly see? Even when focused intently upon something, do I see its entirety, or only what my mind desires to see?
Often, while walking in nature I've been startled by a stick that I perceived as a snake. But to see a snake and mistake it for a stick? I can't recall that happening before. Maybe it has occurred often, but without the still shot of the camera, I couldn't find the image in real time. Carefully, I make my way in the tall grasses along the creek bank, wanting to avoid any creatures lurking about. Even when I feel the presence of a snake or another living thing, I let my mind tell me they are not there.
And yet, I trust the presence of the invisible, sensing and knowing those eyes are upon me. I trust what cannot be seen of the invisible, but only trust what I can see in the visible. Can it be true that the mind has the final say over what the eyes see? And where lies the source of knowing of the invisible's presence? Can these two forces of duality meet, converging like forks in the creek at a confluence of perception?
Little Brown Snake
Only later, when the image was enlarged upon the wide screen of my computer did the snake appear. Magnified further, I saw its head lifted up, eyes peering at me with curiosity. What did you make of me, little brown snake? Was I an object or a sensation? I came closer to the water, attracted by the play of light and shadow, within inches of where you were. You must have silently slithered away, for only a moment later, did my feet stand in your pool of sunlight.
Little brown snake's body moves like waves on the water, undulating in a rhythmic meandering. Living near the medium of water that shapes and moulds its movements, it is the embodiment of waves in motion. I look at you, little brown snake, and I reflect on all my months of research focused upon the Great Serpent Mound.
Revealing the little brown snake begs the question, does art imitate life or does life imitate art?
When involved in an artful process, does the object of focus find its form in the momentary awareness of life? Does it jump into the costuming of the every day grind? How do we shift the gaze of our seeing toward its recognition? Or will it stand mistaken for something else entirely? Life's imitation of our art is that secret handshake offered by the invisible, extending across the veil of separation.
Seamless Revealed
Sunlight reflected on water captivates and holds me stunned by its intrinsic beauty. It is a well defined path that beckons, ushering me into that sacred silent place where the unseen seamlessly flows into the seen.
Light reflected, is a different medium than light absorbed. Sunlight on my back penetrates my shirt and skin, where light on the water bounces about, sparkling as it jumps and skims along the surface of moving water. I catch the dancing light with my eyes and breathe it in. Its freshness renews; its vitality restores.
Light on water illuminating the current, the crest of waves, the movement beneath and upon the surface waters, reveals the indelible pattern of nature's rhythmic meandering. Nature flows. If I can learn to flow with it, will I see more of what is visible and feel more of what is invisible?
