The Spanish Tarot
reviewed by Bonnie Cehovet, TE
Author: unknown
Artist: Based on the Liguria-Piedmontese Tarot printed from
woodblocks in 1736.
I came across this deck while following up a lead for another deck (that unfortunately was sold out). I was very happy that I did! The “Spanish Tarot” is a product of the well known Spanish publishing company Fournier. The deck itself is a full 78 card, Marseille style deck, reproduced to resemble the woodblock print of the Liguria-Piedmontese Tarot (printed in 1736).
It is packaged in a tuck type box, done in burnished brown with gold tones. The face of the box carries deck information, while the back of the box carries a graphic of the Magician. The inside of the box is done in red and white, with a continuing pattern of the Fournier company name.
The LWB (Little White Book) that accompanies the deck is written in Spanish, English, and French. It appears that Stuart Kaplan of U.S. Games is responsible for the English translation. There is a chart listing the card titles (side by side) in English, Spanish, and French. There is a short introduction to the Tarot that references the hermetic tradition, as well as the influence of Jewish Kabbalistic experts. The cards carry a brief description, but no scans.
From the LWB:
“The Hermit Represents the guiding spirit.
Normal position: Counsel, knowledge, solitude, prudence, caution, resignation, withdrawal, misguided, failure to face facts, possessor of secrets.
Reversed position: Imprudence, incorrect advice, immaturity, rashness, confusion.”
There is also a short section on reading the cards, using the traditional Celtic Cross spread.
The cards themselves are approximately 2 3/8” by 4 3/8”, of good quality, glossy card stock. The backs are reversible, beige with a gray diamond pattern, with a flower in the center of each diamond. The faces carry a beige background, with a thin black border inset approximately 1⁄4”. The major colors used are red, blue, green, and a brownish-gold.
The Major Arcana follow the traditional titles, with Justice as VIII, and Strength as XI. The titles are placed at the top of the card in English, and the bottom of the card in Spanish. The Marseille style of artwork is evident several cards: the Fool shows a cat-like animal companion, as opposed to a dog; the shields for the Empress and Emperor carry the Eagle; and the Wheel of Fortune, with a crowned figure at the top, an animal-like figure ascending (donkey?), and a figure with a human face descending.
The suits are the traditional Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles, with the Court Cards entitled King, Queen, Knight, and Page. The Pips (numbered cards) are done Marseille style, with no pictures. Each suit is color coded: Wands are green, Cups are brownish-red, Swords are blue, and Pentacles are brownish-gold. Small bits of vines with flowers are used on the cards. There is no text on the cards. The Aces show the card number, in Roman numerals, on the top left hand side, and the bottom middle and right hand side. The Court Cards show the title and suit at the bottom of the card, in Spanish.
The Two of Pentacles shows the information for the card maker (Fournier). The Ten of Cups shows three rows of upright cups, with the tenth cup lying on its side at the top of the card. The Swords are presented as curved, with the odd numbered Sword presented as straight (i.e. for the Seven of Swords, six swords are curved, and the seventh one is straight).
I found this to be a nice example of the Marseille style Tarot, and a very easy deck to work with. It is also interesting to have the card titles in three languages, side by side!
