Almanac of the Ancients:
June 2008

by Triple Moon Goddess
Welcome to what we now consider the beginning of summer (although if you have been reading every month, you know that the ancients already considered it as having begun). The ancients needed to “rush” the season. It felt good to welcome back the light to the world, and it was necessary for survival. There was much work to be done and very little time to do it.

“June” came from the goddess Juno. Juno was a Roman goddess and the Queen of the gods. The festival of Matronalia was held in her honor every March. She also represented the finances of the empire and was the protector of Rome. This month is sacred to all goddesses of love and beauty. Use this month to beautify your surroundings. Do some last minute spring cleaning and give away your old clothes and household goods to charity. Tidy up the garden, or plant some new additions to it. Maybe paint a room in your home a pretty new color, or buy a new item of clothing or a new summer hairstyle!

The sun signs of Gemini and Cancer appear this month , and their birth stone is the ruby. The red color of passion and love. The great solar wheel turns to the summer solstice (Midsummer’s Day), one of the four lesser sabbats, and we celebrate the longest day of the year. Some parts of the world will actually have 24 hours of sun on this day. Some of you may already be wearing your summer clothes, have children off from school, or have already been enjoying the outdoors, but now it is official...whatever that means!

June 20 is a day to honor Cerridwen, the Celtic goddess of fertility. To honor her, tie green ribbons to trees, light green candles and burn vervain. Wear green on this day, and maybe an oak leaf in your hair...see what fun we can have!

The day after summer solstice, the days begin to get shorter, and summer solstice celebrations include bonfires to help increase the sun’s power. The ancients didn’t want to sun to wane, it just started to warm the world, make crops grown, birds hatch, and animals give birth. The rituals included jumping over the bonfires, and the tradition says that the height that the young men jump is the height of the crops...I would think that since they didn’t want to get burned , the crops were always pretty tall indeed! Light a bonfire, dance around it, but please do not try to jump over it ! I would recommend something more in the way of Som’ores , hot dogs, or just plain old marshmallows.

Midsummer would mean no more planting or plowing. The days would be filled with repairing tools, watering the crops when necessary, praying for rain(but not too much), and watching the crops grow. This was a time to fish, hunt, and play in the outdoors. It wasn’t all work , it was a time for summer vacation, even though the ancients would not have called it that.

Wiccans believe that this is the perfect time to cut divining rods, and to do divination rituals. Find a tree and ask its’ permission to cut the wands, then thank it after you have done so. These rods will last a long time , and work wonderfully.

There were night long celebrations, and in some countries that is still done today. Songs are sung, flowers are worn, and the bonfires are kept burning all night long. Special healing herbs are gathered as it is believed that the solstice sun would give them their maximum healing powers, and people wanted to gather the herbs before that power waned.

The Celts and Druids also worshiped the Oak King. He was always growing stronger, even as the sun waned through the summer months. He defied his loss to the Holly King. The Oak King often engages in battles with the Holly King when Druid and Celtic rituals are re-enacted. The Holly King, of course, wins every year and comes back into power, while the oaks themselves remain strong, even in defeat. The festival of the Oak Nymph was an annual celebration on the first in many areas.

I lived near Chaco Canyon in New Mexico. Chaco is the Native American version of Stonehenge. The light of the summer solstice will highlight carvings during sunrise and sunset. The site is remote, beautiful, and has a very interesting energy to it. This is also a great place to obtain EVP’s (Electronic voice phenomenon), and to have very interesting and spiritual experiences. It is a good place to celebrate the solstice if you can. If you are feeling like you need a break, take a trip to Chaco in NW New Mexico, and then cross into Arizona and visit Sedona. What a wonderful spiritual journey!

In June there was also the festival of Vestalia to honor Vesta the goddess of the hearth, it was an eight day festival celebrated by married women. The shrine of Vesta was again closed after the celebration only to be entered by its caretakers, the Vestal Virgins.

There were rice festivals in Japan around the same time, and in China the grain gods are honored. On the 12th in Korea the rice farmers will wash their hair in a stream to cleanse away all bad luck, ensuring the crops will grow. The twelfth is also a day to honor Zeus with oak leaves, so bring some oak leaves into your home to honor him.

June 17 in Japan was put aside to chase away the rain spirits that would bring too much rain to the region and ruin the crops. Seven white robed priestesses will perform a dance while holding lily stalks. They are then blessed and left in the fields.

Aestas, the Roman goddess of summer , was honored on June 30 . She was originally a corn goddess and cornbread is still baked in her honor. The Native American corn goddesses are also honored at this time.

So take time this month to honor the solstice. Find a Pagan or Native American celebration near you and experience the old traditions that are still honored by many today. Take a trip to the southwest, plant an oak tree, light a bonfire, bake cornbread, but whatever you do...CELEBRATE! The ancients took these celebrations, rituals and traditions very seriously, they carried them through the rough times, and kept hope alive.

Enjoy the season , but as you are clinking your ice tea glasses, remember the gods and goddesses of summer, fertility, love, passion and fertility!

Namaste!
Gina
