Astrologer's Notes:

A Political Update

by Basil Fearrington
It has been several months since my last politics-related essay here. The race has become one of the most interesting there has been in some time because it started without a clear favorite and features the first ever challenge to the cultural and gender status quo with the inclusion of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama..

Reviewing the Symbols

What do we look for in presidential races? How can we tell which candidate has an edge? As is the case with anything else in astrology, the answer to this question depends on the methodology of the astrologer and every astrologer has gotten it wrong at one time or the other.

I operate under the basic premise that becoming the leader of the country is a life-changing experience. In astrology, life changing events are shown by outer planet hard aspect transits to the Angles, Sun or Moon. To these we can add the importance of arcs to the Angles, Sun or Moon (except perhaps Mercury). It is important to understand that sextiles and trines are not developmental. They do not symbolize effort and there is no victory or achievement possible without effort. Also, it is best to avoid getting esoteric with your astrology in this kind of analysis. Even eclipses can be too much of a stretch. Keep it simple. If you use every technique that has ever been invented, you will end up with yes and no answers. What do I mean? I have seen presidential astrological analysis as follows: “The Secondary Progressed Vesta was making a trine to the Secondary Progressed Midheaven, which is in the same degree as the Solar Eclipse preceding the election. And the eclipse trines the natal Midheaven” This is a mishmash of techniques that, in the end, do nothing but rationalize the answer you are looking for. There are so many techniques in astrology that if you look deeply enough, you will be able to justify any view you might have. This is why I believe in keeping things as simple as possible.

All of these aspects must be placed within the perspective of the candidate’s political reality. The measurements have to be used with common sense as the same aspect can mean different things to different candidates. For example, when transiting Saturn conjoins the natal Sun, it is often a time when one is rewarded for having toiled long and hard towards a goal. On the other hand, if one has already been in office or has been going after a goal not meant to be, this is an aspect that can symbolize the altering of structure in one’s life, especially in politics. It is not always a cut-and-dried situation.

The candidate who has the best chance in reality coupled with the horoscope symbolizing the kind of developmental strength that is necessary stands a good chance of winning the election.

Past Elections

Analyzing horoscopes for the winner of the presidential race in this country can be tricky. First of all, you must be objective and keep your personal views about a candidate out of the decision-making process. Decisions must be made from the astrology, coupled with common sense. And most importantly, you have to practice sane, sound, practical astrology.

I can recall a previous presidential race where one extremely prominent astrologer wrote overwhelmingly that his analysis suggested that a certain candidate would win. Privately this was the man that he preferred to win. When the other candidate won in a landslide victory, the astrologer’s rationale was that the wrong man was elected! In other words, “I was right. 75% of the American population who voted the candidate in was wrong.”

I did something similar in doing an analysis for the Bush-Kerry election. In that race, I would probably have found a way to astrologically rationalize how even Dennis Rodman would have won against Bush because deep down inside, I wanted Bush to lose! In his towering book, “Astrology for the Millions,” the late Grant Lewi wrote eloquently with examples of how men of power fall out of power during Saturn Returns, which Bush had exactly in 2004. This is something I had seen many times through the years and it was the centerpiece of the logic I used for analysis at that time. I ignored the fact that Jupiter, by transit, was making contact with his Sun and Moon. I also ignored (did not want to see) that Kerry had the very difficult Pluto to Saturn transit. I wasn’t objective. The astrology was easy and clear but I went against it because I allowed personal preferences to call the shots instead of using astrology objectively. These favorite-based-decisions are the kinds of things that must be avoided.

As well, it is helpful to know a bit about politics, about the race and about the candidates, what they stand for and how they are situated within their respective political parties. Reality and astrology must combine to make the wise decision. It cannot at all be about who you want to win because when it is, you will inevitably read the wrong thing in some astrological symbol and make the wrong assessment.

Examples

If we look at some of the past elections, we can see the symbols in action and get a feeling for all that has been discussed here.

Kennedy - Nixon

n the 1960 election between Kennedy and Nixon, Kennedy had his SP Moon cross the Descendant that year (later squaring Saturn; coming more into the public and making big plans for advancement), followed later on by the square of Pluto to his Sun (exact on election day). Nixon had SP Moon opposed Saturn; transiting Jupiter conjunct the Moon; transiting Uranus opposed the Moon and transiting Saturn conjunct the Sun! The comparison seems to suggest a victory for Nixon because of the Jupiter factor and the overall strength of the measurements especially against a young, new candidate. This is a perfect example of how measurements have to be placed into reality and the reality of that time period was simply that Kennedy was able to project himself better on camera and in the media than did Nixon. And it was a point in time, much like now, where many people were looking for the kind of change that Kennedy seemed to be the best fit for. The chances are that Kennedy might have lost if the previous president had held the same posture as Clinton held at the end of his second term.

Gore - Bush

In the election between George W. Bush and Al Gore, Bush had NO significant, life-changing measurements in his horoscope! Transiting Jupiter squared Mars, ruler of his Midheaven, but that is hardly a life-changing measurement. But with transiting Neptune opposing Gore’s Ascendant (it doesn’t get more debilitating for a candidate than that), perhaps it was just destiny for Gore to lose and to lose under “Neptunian” circumstances (victory given to Bush by the Supreme Court). I know few astrologers who thought, before the fact that Bush would win.

Clinton - Bush

In the 1992 election between George Bush and Bill Clinton, Bush did himself in by promising to not raise taxes only to end up raising taxes. That was a key issue that the analysis of the time needed to be placed in. He was trounced by Clinton in a landslide election. The Bush horoscope had transiting Neptune squaring his Moon when the election was held.

Clinton’s horoscope was about as active as could be during election year 1992 and even afterwards. The Moon rules his Midheaven. Earlier in that year he had SA MC=Moon with transiting Pluto opposed the Moon and with the SA Moon squaring the Ascendant. This is a tremendous focus on the public standing and career. Added to these was SA Venus=Sun THAT COUPLED WITH SA SUN=VENUS!!!!! This is a tremendous statement of popularity, being liked, being accepted and loved. All of this was punctuated by the Solar Arc semi-square, which is kind of a midlife Saturn Return in terms of symbolizing dramatic changes of level in life. Clinton’s astrology was dominant and the reality reflected the symbolisms. Bush did not have a chance.

What would you think if you knew that a horoscope had the following measurements in a given year? Transiting Pluto square MC; transiting Pluto square Saturn; transiting Jupiter opposed the Sun; transiting Jupiter conjunct Moon; transiting Pluto conjunct Sun? You would expect quite a bit of deep change, reward, probably through focused ambition connected to the career, right? This is exactly what took place in the horoscope of Michael Dukakis the year he lost the presidential bid to George Bush. Despite leading the polls well into theh campaign (as late as the September before the election) Dukakis’ problem was not the astrology (it is never the astrology). Like Nixon, he had a manner of projecting himself that didn’t help him and we find that this often the case when Scorpio is prominent as a Sun, Moon or Ascendant Sign (Hillary Clinton has an unaspected Sun in Scorpio) without anything to offset it.

In contrast, George Bush’s measurements paled: SP Moon opposed the Ascendant; transiting Jupiter conjunct the Midheaven. Bush, like many Republicans after Reagan, was a beneficiary of Reagan’s popularity.

In every case of a candidate running for office and/or winning, you’ve seen one of the aspects I listed in place. It is rare for any life-changing event to take place without one of those aspects being in effect.

Updating 2008

Republicans

WRepublicans

What I wrote about Rudy Giuliani months ago on this site has come true. I suggested that his life was about to undergo a major new beginning out of politics. At the time of this writing he has officially dropped out of the race. His horoscope is about to receive transit squares from Saturn to his Sun and the very important, very emphatic transit of Pluto opposed the MC and square the Ascendant. These are punctuated by transiting Neptune opposing his Moon, co-ruler of X. The ingredients suggest a weakness in his public status leading to a shift of gears in his ambitions that takes him on a new path. I believe that Giuliani’s political career is finished.

Mitt Romney has a transit of Saturn getting closer and closer to opposition to his Sun. His political reality is that he is not a favored candidate for many reasons, one of which is his vacillation on issues. Despite his financial prowess, Romney’s horoscope does not seem to suggest that this is his time and I do not believe that he will prevail.

Mike Huckabee’s birth time is unknown to us. In reality, he has little chance of being the Republican nominee if for no other reason than he would have severe difficulties winning the states outside of the various areas of the country known as “Bible Belts.” He would make a great vice-president to the eventual nominee, insuring the votes from the south, which are a must to become president.

John McCain has two things going for him astrologically. The transit of Saturn to the Sun is huge. As aforementioned, under this transit, a person who has been working hard on the correct path reaps the rewards for diligent hard work and McCain certainly deserves it for what he went through as a war prisoner and at the hands of Bush in the 2000 campaign. At the same time, transiting Jupiter will oppose McCain’s Midheaven all year as it conjoins his Moon, ruler of X. In light of the competition and his hard work of the past, these are good omens and I feel that McCain is going to be very competitive, despite the fact that he is not well-endorsed by the “true” conservatives and has alienated so many of them through the years. Astrology suggests that McCain wins the Republican nomination. It is very unlikely that the any of other candidates will win the nomination as I see it.

Democrats

On the Democratic side of the fence, I’ve written extensively about Hilary Clinton’s great potential to be the next president. I wrote that as far back as 2003 (see http://noeltyl.com/techniques/030729.html) when it was not a fact that she would even run.

What Hillary has going for her (sometimes against her too) is the Clinton name and the experience. The Clintons, probably with Ted Kennedy, are easily at the top of the power ladder amongst Democrats. Despite the issues connected with Bill’s presidency, there were very good times for the country when he was president and she benefits from the association. When we take all of this and place it in astrological context, knowing that she has SA Jupiter=Sun and transiting Jupiter square Sun at the same time around the time of an election she is running for, it is a no-brainer to give her the absolute best chance of winning, despite being a woman and despite being seen as a “left-wing crazy.”

The caveat is that transiting Neptune squares her Ascendant all year while at the same time it opposes daughter Chelsea’s Midheaven. This is a major omen suggesting the potential of a substantial family problem of some kind. It somewhat offsets the grandiosity of the Jupiter contacts forming. Otherwise I think she would be driving a campaign downhill at full speed.. Neptune is rarely a symbol of the greatest of times when prominent in a predictive measurement for a political candidate.

The presence of Senator Barack Obama has made things interesting in the Democratic race. We do not have Obama’s timed birth data yet although I suspect that he was born between 1:06 PM-1:21 PM on August 4, 1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. Any horoscope cast in that time period doesn’t have the strength in 2008 that Hillary Clinton’s horoscope has until you see the Solar Arc semi-square that occurs or will have occurred (depending on the time of birth) by the time this essay is published..

The solar arc semi-square, astrologically speaking, means that every planet and position in the horoscope has arced to semi-square their natal positions. It is a time of enormous change potential in one’s life in one direction or another. Bill Clinton had it in his election year. O.J. Simpson had it when he was arrested. Michael Jackson had it when he was arrested. These examples show the enormous change potential of this astrological phenomenon. Although we are uncertain of Obama’s time of birth, we do know that this semi-square is exact in 2008, probably early in 2008 and so we expect this to be a pivotal time for him.

Obama has half of his party in his coalition and probably has the interest of half of the people who would naturally vote for a Democrat. When people see his presentation, the majority of them is endeared to him and become supporters. His financial prowess shows how well and how easily he is able to get support.

What Obama has greatly to his advantage is that he is a far cry from most any preceding president of the last 50 years except perhaps JFK. So very many negative things have taken place in the present administration that many people are really looking for a fresh start and fresh mindset. Obama represents the greatest potential of change far more than any other candidate running in this race. However, that is also a weakness. It leaves him in a “take me or leave me” posture because there are people in this country who absolutely despise the “liberal,” “far left” viewpoint. There are some who will see Obama as far on the left as most saw Dick Cheney to be on the right. In the end, by the time they are done “swift boating” Obama, it may be difficult for him to proceed whereas Hillary Clinton has undergone those kinds of attacks (and remained victorious) for 35 years now. On the other hand, I suppose that if there was any swift-boating to be done to Obama, the Clinton research think-tank would have found it by now but we have to wait and see. If he should win the nomination, the Republicans will aim their most powerful guns at Obama.

We need confirmed birth data on Barack Obama to be conclusive about the election. It is hard to imagine a symbol being more “fortunate” than Hillary’s SA Jupiter=Sun – transiting Jupiter square Sun combination. But Obama is as formidable an opponent as Hillary could have now and we must remember that Bill Clinton has the solar arc semi-square in the year when he became president.

I was just about to write about of John Edwards’ probable dropping out of the race when it was announced as a fact on television, literally as I was writing this paragraph! Even without an astrological analysis, Edwards’ overall position, in terms of political strength, was simply not strong enough. And when seen through the lens of astrology, there was just nothing there to suggest the kind of life-changing experience that becoming a president or presidential candidate is.

Final Analysis

As I see it now, (January 30, 2008), through the eyes of astrology, Hillary Clinton will win the Democratic nomination. John McCain will win the Republican nomination. Hillary Clinton will defeat John McClain and become the next president. Unlike when Bush ran for president, the Republican Party is now fractured. The mouthpieces of the party such as Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity are openly vocal about their dislike of what McCain stands for in regards to conservatism. Unless things change and the thought of Hillary as president unites the Republicans, the loss of backing from his party will probably either hurt McCain, change the Republican Party or both.

Looking Ahead

Regardless of who wins this election, unless there is a drastic change in circumstances, that president will take the oath when the Moon is Void of Course. The last time an oath was taken when the Moon was VOC was Bill Clinton’s second term and we all know what took place then. The job of being President of the United States is difficult. When the term is initiated under Moon VOC, the picture becomes much more complex in terms of difficulties and challenges.

Stay tuned!
