Rhodiola Rosea - A Natural Stress Buster
by Lonny Brown, HHc. |
|
|
The effects of stress in our lives are many: fatigue, poor concentration, memory loss, anxiety, depression, irritability, sleep disturbances, poor appetite and more. Chronic stress can compromise your work capacity, sex drive, heart health, and immunity to disease. Now some good news: the traditional Siberian folk herb, Rhodiola Rosea - has been shown to be an effective (and very safe) natural stress-antidote.
Indigenous to harsh arctic and alpine environments of extreme cold, low oxygen, little rainfall, and intense sunlight, R. rosea (AKA "Golden Root") produces a group of powerful defensive compounds called phytoadaptogens, that also have protective effects in humans. Like the Vikings of old, Russian soldiers and athletes have long relied on Rhodiola's protective and recuperative properties. A recent study demonstrated the same benefits in highly-stressed night-duty physicians[i] as well as foreign students during final exams.[ii] In another, job performance errors were reduced by approximately fifty percent,[iii] supporting Rhodiola's reputation as a "brain tonic," as well as body booster.
For Body and Brain.
When the body reacts to stress successfully - by increasing necessary hormones, regulating the cardiovascular system, and restoring systemic balance (homeostasis) - the response is called adaptation. When a plant-based supplement produces the same functions, it is classified as an adaptogen. One well-known example is Ginseng, but Rhodiola rosea is more effective, and safer. In fact, says international phyotomedicine expert Zakira Ramazonov, "This unique medicinal plant may be the only proven complete adaptogen" because it fulfils three major criteria: (1) resists physical, chemical, and biological stressors; (2) normalizes functions regardless of the direction or degree of disruption; and (3) has no negative side-effects. Dr. Ramazonov, author of Rhodiola Rosea - The Complete Adaptogen for Chronic Stress Disorder predicts that this ancient medicinal herb will become "one of the most widely used new U.S. health supplements of this decade."
Reliable Reputation
More than 180 European medical studies since 1961 have shown that R. rosea enhances strength, stamina, mental performance, emotional health and immunity. It also counteracts chronic fatigue, hypertension, and obesity. Animal studies show similar effects on diabetes and even cancer.
Rhodiola's multiple benefits derive from it's effects on the neurological and endocrine systems. It stimulates the release of mood-modulating neurotransmitters such as serotonin and beta-endorphins, and reduces the stress hormone, cortisol. Unlike many chemical drugs, Rhodiola works biologically, bringing faster stress-recovery - even with repeated use - without creating any unwanted side-effects or reverse crash of energy.
Rhodiola also has antioxidant, cardio-protective, and antidepressant properties. It may even help boost sex drive and enhance fertility. In a study of women with Amenorrhea (the absence of menstrual periods), normal menses was restored in over half the participants after taking Rhodiola125, and many achieved pregnancy after fertility drugs failed.
Shopping for Rhodiola
Rhodiola rosea is marketed in health food and nutrition stores and online, as a non-prescription "neutraceutical" for mood elevation, mental alertness and sports performance (although these claims remain unevaluated by the FDA). Rhodiola should not be used by people with bipolar disorder who are vulnerable to becoming manic when given antidepressants or stimulants.
A typical recommended dosage of Rhodiola rosea is 100-400 mg. per day. No side-effects appear even at twice that amount, but taking more does not increase results. Like ginseng and other traditional adaptogens, daily intake over time is recommended. Benefits typically appear within two to three weeks.
Read labels carefully. There are more than 20 different species of Rhodiola, but only R. rosea has the active rosavin compounds proven effective and safe. Reliable brands include Siberian Rhodiola Rosea (from Yellow Emperor, www.yellowemperor.com 1-877-485-6664), Rhodax (from Pinnacle, www.pinnaclebody.com 1-800-899-2749 or GNC stores, GNC.com 1-888-462-2548), Arctic Root (from Swedish Herbal Inst. www.adaptogen.com 1-800-774-9444), and Rhosavin 100TM (from Medicine Plants www.medicine-plants.com). A month’s supply of Rhodiola-based supplements can cost between $20 and $50.
