In his travels he claims the Emperor had a ruby and a carbuncle, each a foot long. He reports the stone shore so bright and was the source of all night illumination in his chambers. "In the adventures of the Golden Fleece the hall of King Priam is described as illuminated at night by a prodigious carbuncle".

The ruler, as his mother in a hammock placed a child attached to two branches, a serpent crept upon him and dropped a stone onto his body. In gratitude, the parents of the child fed and cared for the serpent. The stone had a warm yellow hue, verging on red, and shone brightly at night and could light a room. Rumphius concluded the story that the fabulous stone was passed on to the King of Siam.
