Garnet was known for centuries before the birth of Christ, and long time ago was used as a protective talisman. It's intense red color led to the belief that it glowed with its own light.
Garnet was believed to possess other curative powers; powdered and taken internally or as a poultice, a popular antidote for poisons. The stone was reported to prevent over-indulgence and assist is resisting temptation to live luxuriously. When worn known to dissipate sadness, avert dreams and evil thoughts, exhilarate the soul and foretell misfortunes.

Name:
Name: Garnet came from the Latin word granum or granites - meaning grain or "like seeds" from the Phoenician word for pomegranate - "punica geranatum". Clusters of garnet in matrix look similar to the pomegranate seeds. The many colors and sources of garnet have led to numerous pseudonyms for the gem. One variety that is flamed red or golden orange is a mixture of pyrope and spessartine molecules is called "Malaya garnet" from the native word "malias" - meaning "out of the family" and refers to this stone as different from other garnets. Another translation is "prostitute" considered vulgar for this gorgeous variation.

Associated Mineral: beryl, feldspars, quartz, rhodonite, topaz, tourmalines and other manganese minerals
History, Myth, Legend and Lore:
ERomans - likened the stone to a glowing coal, symbolizing fire and stimulus, chosen to represent Mars, the god of war and bloodshed.
Pliny - divides his Carbunculi into male as brilliant ruby and female as duller luster ruby. It was speculated that the male was ruby and the female was garnet.
Christian tradition - the blood red color symbolized Christ's suffering on the cross. This stone is associated with the apostle, Andrew and prescribed for heart stimulation but warned on passionate display for fear of heart failure.
Andreas, Bishop of Caesarea, tenth century - using the stones listed as Foundations Stones of the New Jerusalem in Revelations 21
Camillus Leonardus - wrote "It is not hurt by fire, nor does it take the colour of another gem that is put to it, tho' other gems receive from it".
Koran states, the light of the fourth heaven is given by the glow of a garnet structure.
The Book of Seals - states "a Garnet with the image of a lion engraved thereon to protect and preserve honors and health of the wearer".
Anatomy of Melancholy - Burton tells of a granutus called an "imperfect ruby" - "if hung or taken as a drink will resist sorrow and recreate the heart".
Bohemian manuscript, 1391 - lists garnet and other red stones as cure for inflammatory diseases and calms quarrels and hot tempers. The red color absorbed the heat of fever and passion.
The Book of Dreams - says to dream of garnet meant "the accumulation of riches", brings sleeps to the sleepless, drives away plague and all evil spirits, and attracts riches, honor, glory, great wisdom and constant fidelity to all obligations.
Chevalier Jean de Mandeville's fourteenth century Lapidaire - described three forms of carbuncle and a separate gem called garnet. In his travels he claims the Emperor had a ruby and a carbuncle, each a foot long. He reports the stone shore so bright and was the source of all night illumination in his chambers. "In the adventures of the Golden Fleece the hall of King Priam is described as illuminated at night by a prodigious carbuncle".
Romount of the Rose - Chaucer, one of the greatest poets described the jeweled clothing of Richesse.
Rumphius, 1687 - wrote a fantasy regarding the ruler of the Island of Amboin - It is the tale of a carbuncle brought by the serpent. The ruler, as his mother in a hammock placed a child attached to two branches, a serpent crept upon him and dropped a stone onto his body. In gratitude, the parents of the child fed and cared for the serpent. The stone had a warm yellow hue, verging on red, and shone brightly at night and could light a room. Rumphius concluded the story that the fabulous stone was passed on to the King of Siam.
Asiatic countries - the other used of the stone - as a projectile in guns - Indian warriors believed the red gem wound would inflict a more deadly wound.
Twentieth century - Crystal Practitioners call garnet as the "stone of health". The gem was used to remove negative energies and called upon to strengthen love and bring commitment and devotion to couples.
Metaphysical Use and Properties:

Attributes:
It cleanses and reenergizes the chakras, revitalizes, purifies and balance energies. Long ago was used as a protective talisman and square cut Garnet was believed to bring success in business matters. Garnet balances the sex drive, alleviates emotional disharmony and inspires love and devotion. Red Garnet stimulates the rise of kundalini energy and aids sexual potency. It activates other crystals amplifying their effect. It has a strong link with the pituitary gland and can stimulate expanded awareness and past life recall. It removes inhibitions and taboos.
Healing:
It stimulates the metabolism, treats spinal and cellular disorders, purifies and reenergizes blood, heart, lungs, and regenerates DNA. It also assists assimilation of vitamins and minerals. It is a useful stone to have during challenges and lawsuits teaches relaxation and going with the flow, inspires service and cooperation. It enhances fertility and aids assimilation of Vitamin A. Garnet is excellent for arthritis, rheumatism, fortifies the kidneys and beneficial for the mucus membranes and skin.
ANDRADITE: It stimulates creativity and attracts what you need most for your development, dissolves feelings of alienation and or isolation and attracts intimate encounters. Garnet realigns magnetic fields, cleanses and expands aura, opening psychic vision. It encourages the formation of blood and energizes the liver and aids assimilation of calcium, magnesium and iron.
RED GARNET: It is attuned to the heart energy, revitalizes feelings and enhances sexuality. Red Garnet controls anger especially toward the self.
