When Worlds Collide!

by Shaun Brown
At the end of 2004 my aunt died and left me a small, unexpected fortune. With it, I bought a few housy things and a new VW Beetle. In the first week of owning my first new car, at the age of 56, I was attending an herb class and while parking in a field, I smartly scratched the back bumper into a boulder. I had always noted that one day I would get that fixed.

Fast forward to January 2008 I was cleaning up the massage room, getting it ready for the next day. A thought went through my mind to go to Traders Joes and get stuff. Usually my tendency is to stay in after dark but what the heck. I jumped in my car and headed out. On the way I stopped at the bank and withdrew $260 cash to pay my fence guy. Since that last big storm I had lost most of my fencing and wanted to get him going on building a new gate and sinking a fence post. He was due to start the building process in a few days.

I purchased all of the stuff I needed and proceeded to buzz home. As I approached Bella Vista High School, I slowed down to the legal limit of 25 miles and about 15 seconds later the old banger car behind me did not. BANG! I was rear-ended. My first thought was, “Thank you God for not making this be worse than it was.” My second thought was, “What the fuck!!” Excuse the French.

As I looked into my rear view mirror the guy driver still had his cell phone glued to his ear as his arm motioned me to move off to the side of the road. When shit happens I have developed a penchant to always ask why? Anyway we pulled onto a dark side street and proceeded to get out of our vehicles to take a look. Guy driver was about my age, came toward me with an, “I am so sorry.” And given the fact that I had been no Angel with my past driving record, told him that I had done the same thing in the past. We looked at the damage and basically his license plate frame had made a perfect indention in my wonderful, silver plastic bumper. It also just happened to frame the scratches I had caused a few years ago.

I suggested that we just trade info. and move on. He seemed surprised that I wasn’t one of those screaming freak-outs, which given the opportunity to have any level of power at all, would feel entitled to direct bad vibes at him. I guess I’m all growed up because that effort would have seemed a waste of life force to me. A very wise woman once told me to ‘put out one fire at a time’ and having just lost five weeks of work from catching every flu bug; my 87 year old mom was in the hospital with pnemonia and all of my fences down from the last storm, I was taking her advice.

As he came closer to me to hand over the info. He smelled like booze and cigarettes. I had thought about calling the highway patrol to document stuff, I couldn’t’ remember if that’s what you did. But given the circumstances my Angels made it very clear that maybe mentioning his condition would not be wise while waiting in the dark for the Patrol car to arrive. Let’s see, my choices were: being strangled in the bushes waiting for the highway patrol or just exchanging info and moving on. Hmmm.

Given the unlit conditions, the only light by which we could use to write down all the details was in the cab of my car. So I sat in the drivers seat as “Don” squatted down by the open door, with pen in hand, I set out to clerk. Upon further exploration into his details, he had no front plates, the back ones were from Oregon, he had an expired insurance card from Allstate, a California drivers license, he mentioned that he lived with his sister and what else? Oh yes, he asked if he could pay cash after my estimates because he had been in a wreck last year. I said no problem.

I also started thinking: What a nice guy, he is being so forthcoming and honest by giving me way too much personal information. There was enough to hang this guy but instead my head went to: I wonder if it’s too early to start picking out the wedding colors? My Cinderella programming always takes me there. The last time that paradigm took over I was left running for my life because that husband had a knife to my throat. Needless to say my ‘picker’ is broken.

Anyway, he asked me for my contact information as well and I thought that was a good idea. I reached over for my purse in the passengers seat, pulled out my wallet, to give him a business card, and with an unsnap of the cover a wad ‘o’ cash accordioned out. Oh crap, I couldn’t have been more vulnerable. I might as well just handed ‘Don’ my cash!

There we were, me and Don and my wallet. What instantly went through both of our heads was the obvious script. So in one breath, to quickly move forward, I said,” That looks like a lot of cash doesn’t it? I was on my way to pay my rent.” I used the term rent instead of mortgage, which was not true because I own my home, but for some reason ‘rent’ popped out. Probably remnants of my poor past. And with that I handed him my business card, we shook hands, wished each other well, he jumped into his car and I sat there for a minute saying, “Oh shit, that could have gone bad.” Took a deep breath, profusely thanked my Angels and got back on the road.

This event was on a Friday, easily remembered because it was my sons’ birthday. The collision stores in my town were closed for the weekend so I hadn’t gotten an estimate. Monday afternoon, Don called. He wanted to see if I had found out anything about getting the car fixed. I explained to him that Sunday I had just gotten my mom from the hospital and she would stay with me for a while, she had almost died from pneumonia complications, so in time I would get back to him.

As I was trying to give him a projection date to go for estimates, he started talking to me very emotionally about his mom dying two years ago and that he really understood what shape I was in. Don also added that he just wanted to do the right thing by me and to please let him know when I could. That for me was a cue in my head, to start thinking about where I would be buying my wedding invitations, as I hung up the phone. Have you ever connected with a stranger and knew that they were a part of your Cosmic family? This really felt like that to me. Where I get into trouble is thinking that because of his kindness we were destined to be soul mates. I’m older now and I think I have finally reached a point, even though my head goes there, I don’t need to marry everyone that comes along.

A few days passed and I was able to get a couple of estimates. I called Don, which I felt like I now knew, and with the tune of approximately $900 to fix the bumper (which happened to be most of the backend of the car), he decided to let Allstate handle it. At the time of collision he had explained to me that he had a current insurance card but didn’t have it in his wallet. I had dismissed that credibility as I recall.

A few days later he called me with, an Allsate phone contact, a claim number and wished me luck. He also said that if I wasn’t taken care of to call him back. Ok, now I’m thinking a big solitaire on my finger. But not speaking of such silly things to him I just said thanks, and wished him good karma points. He then asked me how my mom was and mentioned that he was excited to see his daughter. Thinking she must be 30 when I asked her age, he said, “Oh, she’s 4.” I thought, “Divorce!” And our relationship started and ended, in my head, in two weeks.

The Allstate office was easy to find. A guy took pictures and had me fill stuff out, he talked about his life and having been in the service, about his wife and at the end of the interview he printed out a check to pay for the damage. I guess he must have gotten foggy about the means of his task with me because he called that evening saying he was only to go over stuff and that the check had not been authorized. Then the next morning he left a message saying the check was good.

A few days passed and the collision folks did a great job giving me a flawless bumper. The serendipitous wish of wanting it fixed after incurring scrapage the first week I owned it had come true. I couldn’t help but wonder what would have happened if I had just stayed home that night. I also felt extremely lucky that I listened to the prompts of my angels and just walked through the process with Don and kept it simple. It almost felt like I was walking a tight rope, certain timelines could have really taken a different turn. And all I kept hearing was, “Baby steps.”

When an event like this happens I try to be an observer and ask the question, “Why~ what am I to learn?” There are always pearls to be gleaned. Sometimes I find them right away and sometimes I need to call my counselor to know where to look. Maybe it was time for my body to get a quick shake, an adjustment perhaps. I did have a little headache for the first several days after. In perfect timing one of my students called a week after the collision to schedule an appointment with me. She needed to get her massage certification papers signed by one of her teachers. So after working on me the headache disappeared for a while and I will continue with my normal twice a month session with my CMT.

Sometimes wishes get answered, like wanting my fender fixed and sometimes they don’t, like wanting to marry Don. It’s all a matter of what is deemed best for me as I try to continue giving my life over to a Power greater than myself. I feel humble, as I look back~ my car and I renewed; I didn’t have to marry someone to be reminded that being single is a choice. I know enough to seek advice and support from my counselor and good friends. This event, where two worlds collided, was all a perfect package of Gratitude! The Power of the Universe is way beyond anything I will ever comprehend.

Until next time,
