I of my own knowledge…
Dreams of Christ
|
|
 |
by Frank DeMarco |
|
|
In last month’s column I described Christ as seen from the other side, courtesy of what I call The Guys Upstairs. In response my friend Robert Clarke emailed me from England of dreams he had had on the subject. Edgar Cayce said that dreams are the purest form of psychic contact, presumably because they come to us free from the ego’s limited perspective. Robert, who has made a lifelong study of dreams from a Jungian perspective, brings to their interpretation a greater than average depth of understanding. Indeed, he has rediscovered in Jung’s often-neglected work the key that we need if the intellectually sophisticated are to be able to see the critical psychic truth in what may seem like mere fairy tales.
“Dear Frank
“I liked your piece about Jesus. Scholars agree that the majority of the letters of Paul are genuine and he speaks several times of Jesus the man actually being crucified - by the powers of the world, not due to God's requirements. But Paul also had powerful visions that transformed him, made him a Christian, and these were of the Christ, the Logos. This is why the Gnostics liked Paul. They knew that he knew that Jesus Christ was two, the man and the Logos. Paul was well acquainted with James the brother of Jesus, and with St. Peter, and in fact had strong arguments with them about how Christianity should be developed. So Paul knew that Jesus was a human being and was crucified, but he knew also the reality of Christ the god.
“I know of several people who have experienced Christ in the modern world, as I have myself - what other form would the Logos take for us in the West but that of Christ? I've just been editing a couple of dreams from my individuation process that brought about transformation within myself and the thing is, all people can experience the same through the unconscious, as many have done though the centuries. I'll attach the dreams as evidence.
“Robert”
Dream One
I am due to start work on a new job but feel so ill with my nerves that it is impossible to do so. As I walk down a street I realise I have forgotten my tinted glasses, which would help to protect my eyes from the world. I cannot face it at the moment. A teenaged girl comes along and I explain to her just why I cannot start the job, apologising for it, and this causes her to weep on my behalf. My suffering and despair weigh so heavily upon me that, falling to my knees, I too begin to sob. With head bent I say that my heart is broken and I cannot go on any further.
At that moment, Christ walks into the dream, wearing long white robes, his arms and hands bleeding, and walking up to me, he lays his hands on my head as I kneel. Now, not only am I on my knees in the dream, I am also watching all of this from a few yards away, just inside the line that divides the sleeping state from consciousness, so to speak. So I watch as Christ leaves the ‘me’ who is on my knees, and walking right past me as I stand there, he walks out of the dream again. Though I see him very clearly from the front, I do not actually register his face.
For some time after this dream I kept asking myself what was different about it, different from normal dreams (as well as the appearance of Christ), but I just could not put my finger on it. Then it suddenly came to me one day when I was out in the fields with my dog, Christ had walked in and out of the dream as a real figure, and was not just an image of the dream as such. I had watched the dream as though from conscious reality, and Christ had come from behind me, from higher consciousness, higher reality, not just from the world itself. An earlier dream had featured the special green fish, the Ichthys, the symbol of Christ as Saviour, and now he had appeared in person.
As with appearances of Christ in other dreams, I have long wondered if this was the Higher Self as a Christ equivalent, the original Christ himself, or the Holy Spirit taking the form of Christ. But he must have the same basic meaning as the original Christ or he would not appear in that form.
All theses forms, the ‘Christ within’, Anthropos of the Gnostics, the Son of Man of Ezekiel, Daniel, and Enoch, Melchizedek with Abraham, Horus, Iu-em-hetep, Anhur, Shu, and Khonsu in Egypt, the Eastern examples of Atman, Purusha, Krishna, and Vishnu etc., in India, Quetzalcoatl in Central America, Ahura Mazda in Persia, Vatea in Polynesia, and Kwan Shai Yin in China, all are forms of the Self found around the world. Of Kwan Shai Yin, Madame Blavatsky says: “He is the Self Manifested: in short, the 'Son of the Father'. Crowned with seven dragons, above his statue there appears the inscription 'Pu-tsi-K'ien-ling, the universal saviour of all living beings.” (The Secret Doctrine, 1888). The Dalai-Lama is said to be one of his incarnations, and the name Kwan Shai Yin means 'The Lord that is seen'; in one sense 'Divine Self seen by Self'’. All of this applies equally to Christ, to the Anthropos, to the Son of Man, and to all of the other God-man, Higher Self, figures. Just as Kwan Shai Yin is crowned with seven dragons, so Christ has seven stars, Horus Seven Lights, Vishnu seven Rishis, and so on. But Christ is the form that has developed for many peoples of the world, including we of the West.
In the dream, I am unable to go on and break down sobbing, which reflects my mental state at that particular time In my suffering, the suffering Christ hears me and comes and performs the ‘laying on of the hands’. As well as indicating healing, this could also mean to confer blessings and grace. Christ himself is bleeding in the dream, which reminds us of how Christ sweats blood in Luke’s Gospel 22:44, “and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling to the ground.” This repeats Osiris Tesh Tesh, the god who suffers in agony and bloody sweat in Egypt. Because blood is red, it is said that the red sun suffered his agony in the Underworld. The Sun-god Atum, as the sun, symbolically set in a ‘red pool’, intimating blood, and even the red, scarlet, or purple robe of Christ is connected with the blood caused by suffering.
Just as Christ is said to redeem the world by his ‘bloody-sweat’, so the alchemists believed the blood sweated from their Stone would produce a Redeemer. Not Christ himself, but his parallel, hence the ‘lapis-Christ parallel’.
Jung comments: "If the adept experiences his own Self, the 'true man', in his work, then … he encounters the analogy of the true man - Christ - in new and direct form, and he recognises in the transformation in which he himself is involved a similarity to the Passion. It is not an 'imitation of Christ' but its exact opposite: an assimilation of the Christ image to his own Self, which is the 'true man'".
And: "Nor does it originate in Christ's Passion: It is the real experience of a man who has got involved in the compensatory contents of the unconscious by investigating the unknown, seriously and to the point of self-sacrifice." Myst. Con. P 349
Hippolytus, one of the Church Fathers who wrote on the Gnostic sects, writes: "The Naassenes speak of a nature of man at once hidden and manifesting itself, which they say is within man, and is the kingdom of heaven that is sought after." Against Heresies V.7
However, I have not developed the higher Self as a Christ figure yet - that occurs with the processes later- and so who is the figure in my dream? The original Christ, the Holy Spirit, just who? (I would now take the figure to be the Logos, who for us is Christ.)
Dream Two
My father takes me to ancient Palestine where we wait by a roadside for a procession to come along which is being led by Christ. Crowds of other people have gathered and are also waiting, but we manage to get a place at the front, where there are stone pillars along the road, so many feet apart. As Christ comes into view, I wonder if he will notice me because of my sufferings, but when he reaches where I am standing, he becomes a golden cloud of light, which then comes and envelopes me.
I have to cover my eyes with my hands because the cloud is so bright and radiant, and an angelic choir sing from above. Then Christ, who has become human form again, holds my hand and takes me flying through the air to the town which is just to the south of where I live. Here, from above, we watch a Salvation Army procession as it marches through the streets, and Christ seems to be showing me that I must bring salvation to this place.
The personal father in these processes represents the male line of spirit, whereas the personal mother represents the soul line of the feminine depths. This is why in older societies boys were taken from their mothers at puberty to be instructed in the spiritual mysteries, not being allowed to see their mothers, and sometimes all females, for the time of the initiation period. It is also why Jesus, as a boy of twelve, rejects his mother in the temple.
As with other dreams involving the Christ figure, I must ask if this is the original Christ, or the Holy Spirit or the Logos, taking his form; or is it what we now call the Higher Self as a Christ equivalent. To St. Teresa and other saints the figure they saw was simply Christ and they were blissfully untroubled by the questions that we must ask today. Yet in trying to ascertain the truth perhaps we are in that sense lessening the mystery and its meaning. Perhaps I should just accept the figure as Christ myself and not spoil the impact with too many questions.
However, I must say the radiance of Christ is such that I have to cover my eyes, and this makes me wonder more seriously if it actually is the original Christ, who will have become an eternal form of the Son of God, of the Logos, in spirit reality. Furthermore, he instructs me to bring salvation to the town a couple of miles south of where I live - where the woman who is my anima figure lives in real life - the soul depths not yet being part of the totality in my processes.
The Self in ultimate form is a complexio oppositorum, a complexity of opposites par excellence, which, or who, has parts reaching down to the animal and insect levels, as well as up to God Himself he is literally part of God come forth, as a Son. Christ in my dream is pure spirit apparently, representing only that side of the Self, the higher, spiritual side, and yet complete in spirit reality. So this is not the lower Self, the Osiris of the lower unconscious, this is the higher, divine Son and part of God.
Jung says of the Christ figure that may be experienced within: "I maintain only that the psychic archetype makes it possible for the divine figure to take form and become possible to understanding." Aion p.182
And: “It would be a great step forward, in my opinion, if at least it were recognised how far the truth of dogma is rooted in the human psyche, which is not the work of human hands.” Mysterium Coniunctionis p.347
Dream Three
Two figures come through, in the clouds above, though just from the waist up, coming from spirit reality into this one, as it were. They are somewhat vague, and I somehow do not see their faces clearly, but I am very aware that one figure is God, and to His right - on the left as I look - is His Son, who seems to be a Christ figure. God speaks to me saying, "The West needs cleaning up".
At the time of this dream I was not aware that Christ had foretold that he would return seated on the right-hand side of God. “… and ye shall see the Son of man sitting on the right hand of power, and coming in the clouds of heaven.” (Mark 14: 62). “Hereafter, shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.” (Luke 22:69).
Neither was I aware that St. Stephen, in Acts, had experienced a vision of Christ standing on the right hand of God. "But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God. And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God." (Acts 7: 55-56), So while the Gospels tell of the coming Christ sitting on the right side of God, my vision is of a Son of Man figure standing on the right hand of God. This follows Stephen’s vision, though it is actually the Higher Self as a Christ figure that I see, the Logos etc..
God then speaks in my dream, saying, "The West needs cleaning up", and surely we can only agree with this statement (who could disagree with God, in any case?). It is gradually falling into chaos, inch by inch, as one of my dreams put it, due to the loss of its mythic/religious foundations, upon which all cultures, large and small, highly civilised and most primitive, rest.
We can see it in so many ways, and scholarship itself has used its knowledge to dissect and destroy the Christian myth with rationalistic and materialistic misunderstanding that Freud himself would have been proud of. Few, if any, of those scholars have realised that Christianity, and indeed, all genuine myths and religions, are based upon experiences of what ancient Egypt called the ‘other world’ through the collective unconscious, where, as my processes have revealed, the Higher Self, God, and the feminine World Soul are the greatest facts. Sometimes the two realities merge and so visions are seen as outer events, but it is the same other reality coming through whether seen in dreams or otherwise.
This dream vision is a direct experience of God and the Son, on the royal line reaching back through Biblical examples to early Egypt. I have experienced the phenomenon a number of times over the years. Atum-Iu, Ra-Horus, Amun-Khonsu, the Ancient of Days with the Son of man, plus other similar experiences of the Old Testament figures, David, Solomon, Ezekiel, Daniel, and the Apocryphal Enoch, with their Son of Man together with the Ancient of Days, all reveal experiences of the divine Son together with his Father. My dream repeats the phenomenon.
Moses first sees an angel in the burning bush and then God speaks, and this too has the same meaning; the angel is the Son with the Father. If you take the unconscious processes far enough, this is what occurs, a part of God becomes the Son who is manifestor for the Father. In another dream I was on top of a hill where I was struck by lightning, touched by God, as the dream said, and I knew this meant I could never be the same again, could never be my old self. I knew now that God and the Son are certain, as much as I know any other fact of reality.
The roots of Western culture lie in Christian soil with beginnings in ancient Egypt, but while other ethnic and cultural groups search out and proclaim their own cultural roots, we of European descent deny ours. We either exist superficially in over-intellectualised psychic dissociation, or try to find religious meaning in Far Eastern forms that are totally foreign to the Western collective unconscious. I once did this myself, searching out the Eastern forms, so I fully understand the reasons why so many people find it necessary. But our own Western soil is extremely rich in religious roots, and as Madame Blavatsky, who was a Buddhist, states, while the Buddha is the penultimate stage of the inner processes, Christ is the ultimate. We in the West must discover our Christian roots again and develop them further, and as my own dream visions show, those roots are extremely rich indeed.
Jung comments:
"Does (Man) know that he is on the point of losing the life-preserving myth of the inner man that Christianity has treasured up for him? Does he realise what lies in store should this catastrophe ever befall him? Is he even capable of realising that this would in fact be a catastrophe? And finally, does the individual know that he is the makeweight that tips the scales?" Civ.in.Tr. p304.

Frank DeMarco holds an M.A. in History from the University of Iowa and a B.A. in History from George Washington University.
His work as co-founder and (for 15 years) chief editor of Hampton Roads Publishing Company brought him into close association with many brilliant and insightful minds, including psychics, remote viewers, channelers and mystics, and showed him the human side of extraordinary abilities.
In 1992, his psychic abilities opened up at a Gateway Voyage at The Monroe Institute in central Virginia. Since then he has been engaged in first-hand exploration of the nature and limits of all things psychic, especially including such areas as healing and guidance, direct access to knowledge, communication with past lives, and the integration of the spiritual dimension into everyday life.
His autobiographical work Muddy Tracks: Exploring an Unsuspected Reality describes the first stages of his discovery of the key to expanded awareness, and offers pointers for those just beginning their quest. In his weblog, www.hologrambooks.com
wordpress.com, he shares the journey and the results of continuing explorations. His blog, “I of my own knowledge…” investigates what individuals can know first-hand about the purpose and conduct of life.
