Too Many Words About Silence
by Lonny Brown, HHc.

"The disappearance of sound by its transformation into silence is the definition of its being limited in time."

- Daniel Barenboim Music Quickens Time

Dear Rebecca,

Thanks for sending the thought-provoking Barenboim quote.

Yes, there is far too little appreciation of silence, and it's fundamental role, not only in music but in consciousness and creation itself. Silence is way too easy to talk about, very rare in experience. I believe that to truly be in silence is to be enlightened.

I'm thinking not only of the precious auditory quite found in wilderness, where man-made noise has yet to penetrate, but also the universal silence that is the sacred interval, the unformed, un-manifested potential of all possibility, the ground and container of all vibration, which is all creation.

Such silence is beyond thought, narrowing down the experiential field considerably, since most of us think and talk to ourselves incessantly.

Also, as Barenboim intimates, silence is experienced in the timeles present. The ego-mind thrives on memory and anticipation, and gets restless in the here and now. In fact, real silence is death to the personality, which by nature tends to sabotage the experience. Any beginning mediator knows this conundrum well: How to achieve silence without thinking about it?

The answer of course is that silence is neither a thing nor achievable. The absolute silence is already here, waiting for me to STOP everything else, including thought. Silence is what we don't do. Silence is the mother of existence.

There are other ways besides meditation to know silence, at least temporarily. Paradoxically, you and a hundred friends can chant your brains out for a few hours and then shut up. The silence is overwhelming!

Peak environmental experiences like base jumping or deep sea diving can override the senses, thus feeling like their total absence. Sensory deprivation tanks mimic the same experience. The traditional East Indian mind/body yoga practice called pratyahara is the internal equivalent: one systematically shuts down each of the senses, then dwells within the resulting silence.

The most direct way to know silence is to become it. As Thich Nhat Hanh says, we can't make peace, we can only be peace. This takes practice.. overcoming the enthralling nature of the movie we think we're starring in.. stepping back.. the meta-shift of waking up to how we are actually in the projection booth. Indeed, as it turns out, we are the light that shines through the film and the lens.. but that's another letter. J

To find the silence in the here and now, sit down, get comfortable, close your eyes, and ask yourself deeply, who am I? Hint: silence is NOT in the answer, it's in the listening for an answer. Please try this and let me know what happens.

With you in silence,

Ljb.
