Tearing Down Walls

by Rev. David Ault
There’s nothing like pushing through perceived limitations to give you a jolt of personal renewal and confidence.

At our spiritual center, we are in the midst of a build out; tearing down walls, reframing and restructuring, all in preparation for our expansion. It is a community effort, with various members lending their construction expertise to guide the rest of us through the process.

There have been nights where l have stayed and worked after other volunteers have left.

It was during one of those cold, late hour sessions that a conscious wave of personal satisfaction seemed to roll over me - reminding that we are always able to stretch our capacity to learn. That is, of course, if we are willing.

Five days prior I would not have had a clue where to begin or what sequence to follow. Now because of showing up and being willing to learn, a part of the construction process has been demystified. With electric drill and crowbar at hand, I continued the tearing down of both physical and psychological walls.

The words “tearing down” are ripe with action – they are the equal and necessary companion to our call to “be.” Tearing down walls of limited beliefs require us to step out, risk, change, get up, move, choose, do – in other words start a personal harvest from a field of verbs by plowing the soil of our infinite possibility.

To make the most of that conscious action, we look at our relationship to spiritual law – that field of energetic resonance which by definition reminds us that attitude is everything. If you believe and are willing to expand your skill, then you can. If you believe you can’t then you are assured that will be your experience also. Henry Ford succinctly offered, “Whether you think that you can or you can’t, you are right.”

So we begin to see an equality in the being and the doing. To simply “be” does not make a seed grow into a flourishing flower. You have to plant it. To only “do” without conscious intention paves the way for chaos and reckless circumstance.

Matthew 7 : 7-8 famously inspires, “Ask and it shall be given you; seek and ye shall find; knock , and it shall be opened. For everyone that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knock it shall be open. Ask, seek, knock – all states of doing, rich in substance when accompanied by the understanding that we are never separate from Infinite Source.

STATES OF DOING

· Ask – No (thing) can be set into motion unless first there is a desire initiated or launched by thought or word through the art of asking. Whether your history with asking is positive or not does not change the fact that it must be done. When you can embrace non-attachment with where the receptivity may come from, you will reap the reward of demonstration. For example, I could have stood in front of the walls of my center and wished them to come down. I would still be there. I asked for volunteers, knowing that the right and perfect person(s) would respond and they did. Metaphysician Ernest Holmes famously said, “Give me less wishbone and more backbone.” You gotta ask.

· Seek – Take the desires dwelling within you and begin the journey of thought and action that move in that direction. Study, read, question, travel, talk less-listen more, honor the dissatisfaction you feel and go do something about it. Associate with possibility rather than problem. Become a seeker.

· Knock – Seemingly the same as asking and seeking – to me knocking means uncovering your service to the world, to humanity, to the planet – it is the quest for your purpose. Knock down your walls of self-imposed limitations and start serving from where you are. There was a very wise man who once said, “I have figured out how to get everything I want in my life. I do it by helping other people get what they want in their lives.” Start knocking.

Tearing down walls – blazing new trails can become a practiced reality when we incorporate the words of Matthew with consistent intention. Discontinue the trigger response to argue for your limitations. Do not fall prey to the mindset that you can’t experience change until… Start asking better questions. In other words stop your fixations on how to get others to change and focus on your willingness to change your attitude. Turn the other cheek of thought to what you love about your life as opposed to what you don’t.

By honoring “conscious doing”, you’ll start to own your inner demolition expert – tearing down self doubt and self-imposed limitations for a more expansive life experience.
