Climbing the Pyramid

Having spent the past year writing about the spiritual side of life found in every day moments, I must admit I'm happy to be writing the first issue of a new year, which means I get to pick a new theme!
However, reflecting on 2008's theme only deepens my conviction in the everyday sacred threads of life. This month, I planned to write about my pinnacle experience of climbing the great Mayan pyramid of Nohoch Mul in Coba, Mexico. Only a few short weeks ago did I perch upon the apex of this colossal monument! But once again, my theme of learning in the ordinary now moment became interwoven into even that peak experience.
At the close of my travels, my camera was stolen along with two memory cards full of hundreds of pictures that catalogued my fantastic journey in the Yucatan. And it was that ordinary moment of thievery which brought the richest and grandest realizations. After disbelief passed, I sewed up my broken heart and instigated my practice of finding the symbolic meaning in the loss of my camera. My heart continued to ache as visuals of each photo recurred in my memory. It took a long while to let them go.
And then it came, the realization that my Mayan adventure was so precious it required no exterior validation. A hard lesson. My trip was meant to be solely and soulfully an inner experience. Weeks later after researching photos online that other people took of the same sacred sites I visited, Chichen Itza, Tulum, and Coba, I feel certain that I've activated the wide angle lens of my ability to see inner visuals. No one captured the Mayalands the way I held them in my heart. Nothing can replace what the imagination and memory can conjure.
Buddha on a Bicycle
His name was Jose and at first I ignored his plea to offer Gene and I a bike ride to the pyramid. But our weariness clung to our sweating backs, and the jungle path grew long, so we acquiesced and hopped up onto his bike carriage, much to the relief of my swollen feet. We'd spent the morning exploring Tulum, and devoted the afternoon to the much larger site of Coba. I could have spent weeks happily exploring both sites, but time was short and we had a destination of Nohoch Mul to meet.
As soon as I witnessed its grandeur, my energy surged and I rushed up its multitude of rocky steps. What a perfect place to survey the cosmos as an ancient astronomer! The vast low jungle provides glorious horizon views in every direction. Across the wide expanse, peeking up from the lush green foliage is another pyramid to the sky, a smaller sister to this tallest monument in the Yucatan. Above me, on the temple facade was a carved figure with remnants of the original paint, depicting the descending god, diving from the above world, down and into life here on earth. Like a birthing from the womb, he, like us, entered the world of manifestation head first. His counterpart was inscribed upon the temple, a female standing erect with her arms upholding the sky. She partnered th e descending passage into the realm of human life, by standing ready to embrace the Moon and perhaps the entire cosmos, symbolizing the ascension to the realm of the gods. Little me, perched upon the perfection of the symbolic realm created by human hands was thrilled as only a perpetual student of the ancients could be.
The climb down was tricky for the steps are much steeper than one notices on the way up. I kept imagining the grandeur of the ancients as they descended the pyramid, upholding the dignity of the gods. They probably never looked down or clung to the steps, crouched and trembling like me. They lived the symbolic realm in every moment of life. I sensed a seamless flow between their interior and exterior perspectives.
Returning to our bike carriage, Jose's delight was genuine when I announced like a child running to her Dad, "I did it!" We engaged in stumbling conversation for the rest of the tour as he struggled for the english words to proudly tell me of his native lands. Jose was beautiful inside and out. His skin shone golden in the sunlight, his eyes, deep pools of sincerity, and his smile so completely present. He took pictures of us with my camera, and explained each aspect of the ancient site with care and=2 0concern for my understanding. His pride for his homeland was intoxicating.
As we parted, I wanted to tip him with every peso we had, so we emptied our pockets and filled his palms with as much generosity as we could muster. Jose personified the inner glow of spiritual light, that intangible way of being I was forever chasing and losing from one moment to the next. Of all my interior images of the Mayalands, his is the clearest. Not the pyramid or glyphs chiseled onto the steles, not the phenomenal grandeur where one would obviously search for great meaning. A young man, so pure of heart. A person I never thought to capture a digital image of became the symbol I sought in the moment. And so my theme follows me into the new year, informing, teaching, and hopefully evolving my inner light.
