One cool thing about turning 60, in November, is there are less big deals. I have acquired some Wisdom so that I don’t have to keep ‘stepping in things’ and that leads to a pretty groovy life. I can give back and share stuff with you and cut your learning curve also.
I have learned that if you do not take care of yourself no one will and if you expect it that really sets up the dynamic of martyrdom. So the one thing we think we need from others, them to take care of us, can quickly feel like abandonment~ which is exactly what we didn’t want! And I’m not talking about friends caring about you I am talking about ‘care’ as an acquisition.
A creative type: artist, teacher, writer or anyone working in their passion, must integrate self-care in order to maintain a healthy energy level and not feel drained at the end of the day. We can only be present in someone else’s life when we can be present in our own.
Energetic balance enables us to keep an even keel. At least we must have the intention to be integrating self-care into our lives. And this process is of course~ life-long. As well as paying attention to caring for myself I will continue to seek outside help in therapy counseling and embrace my shadow sides until I have moved to the next life. A wise person once told me that sometimes we must be our own mother and father to create balance. That was a big relief and it allowed me stop trying to get nurturing from my own mom because she just didn’t have the tools.
Sometimes, in your world, you will find yourself working with folks that are “needy.” You will feel drained after being with them. They are needy because they perceive themselves as “Powerless.” I call them ‘Kling-ons’ or ‘vampires.’ Their belief system requires that they must pull energy from others, instead of becoming disciplined and obtaining their own connection with a Higher Power.
This pathological behavior stems from a lack of connection with their life force usually due to fear or an overwhelming need to control, which is based on fear. Unhealthy symptoms of others, who want you to take care of them are: they’re always in a crisis; they fail to move forward in any healing process; you will always feel a loss of your energy when around them. This type of sucky behavior is just a choice. They say there are no victims only volunteers.
There is a solution. We have been gifted on this planet with many paths to connection. Martyrs can learn, by choice, to seek Inner strength. Many disciplines can guide them to the understanding that they can obtain their own Inner Power, and not feel the need to prey upon others. Meditation, yoga, Tai Chi, hypnotherapy, 12 Step Programs are some forms of discipline and ways to find a connection with Spirit. Remember we are connecting so we don’t carry the world by ourselves. Walking in Nature is another. If you are using any of these techniques, and they are working, point these in the direction of others but ONLY if you are asked. They will integrate them into their own life or not.
I teach meditation to interested students or clients. I have found that a quiet morning habit of simple meditation, (evening possibly too), has given me the experience of ongoing Inner Peace and a place to go for sanctuary.
Finding Your Loving Spirit
One of the most common pitfalls that a creative type can make is not being grounded, to feel off balance, especially working with others. One of the hard questions I ask my students is: “Do you have a higher Power in your life?” In other words do you feel connected to a source of unlimited energy that you can tap into? If you are not connected to any sort of Supreme Being, I choose to call God; you’re in the game alone. When you have no place to send your problems to they stay within. The following are simple instructions for getting connected.
Getting Centered
Create a sacred space. This will be your sacred place to go to and connect with A Higher Source, in the morning or when ever you need to go back to center. It can be just a small table, or as elaborate as you like. I keep my “prayer station” very simple. A white candle, some of my favorite incense (never synthetic), and a few icons of Higher Power symbols that resonate with me and give me focus. If you live with others, let them know that you are creating a special place for yourself to go and be quiet.
If this concept is a problem or is not taken seriously with the people in your life, ask yourself why they are in your life. The exception of course, being your children, don’t get rid of them! Actually when you come from a centered, genuine place, letting them know your intentions to be quiet and meditate or at least not to knock when you are in “special time,” you will be surprised how that habit can spill over into there lives and give them permission to have their own sacred space and quite time. Hmmm.
Upon awakening (within the first hour) go to your prayer station, light the candle and incense (optional) and set an intent that you would like to connect with the Universal Power. You are always safe and secure when you set the intent to connect with the Light. Spend some time slowly breathing in and out. Imagine that as you breathe in, your feet are connected with Mother Earth, and as you breathe out, the top of your head is connected to The Heavens. With eyes closed imagine energy coming through the soles of your feet from Mother Earth filling your whole body up to the top of your head, and as you exhale see the top of your head opening up, like a portal, receiving energy that flows down from the Heavens filling your body to the soles of your feet. Sit with this exercise. Breathe this vision in and out slowly. It only takes a few breaths in this manner every morning to start. After you’re still, a simple prayer of “God direct me in this day” is good.
Have a notebook in front of you so that when your head says, “Buy cat food, call John, do laundry,” you can write these things down and it will start slowing your brain down and allowing you to continue with the meditation without the urgency of ego wanting you to stop meditating. The ego likes to be in control.
So basically you are setting the intent to slow your brain down. As you do this every day it will become easier and easier. When you are finished with your 5-20 minute meditation you will have a list of things already written down to do! I have been a meditator since 1992 and I still use a notebook every morning. The ego just never goes away, BUT it can be trained to sit on the sidelines and give my Inner Self time with my Soul’s purpose before it takes me into my day of service.
Setting up a prayer station speaks to the ritual senses like sight, smell and intent. It gives you an opportunity to have “me time.” Honor yourself and the Universe in this way. Your Angels are just waiting for you to pick up the phone and give you guidance.
Meditation doesn’t have to be an overwhelming ritual. If you are like me, you can set yourself up to not want to do anything if it becomes a chore. There is an abundance of meditation information out there that allows you to choose whatever path you like.
Participate in all of the different classes and workshops that are offered if you like. Just remember to keep it simple, God doesn’t really care. Some people spend all of their time in classes, looking for the answer out there. At some point the journey must start inward. All of your answers are inside. What was it that Jesus said? “The Temple of God lies within.”
The purpose of the exercise is to feel connected to Universal energy, and when you feel disconnected, start again. BREATHE! This takes discipline, but the reward will be staying in your Power and not being blown off course. You won’t be exhausted by the end of the day because all of your energy was misspent trying to hold up the Earth. Remember to TAKE CARE OF YOURSELF~
This is the last column I will be writing for awhile. Frankly, as a writer, there are times when you feel like the ink well has run dry or the sponge if you will. So instead of having this wonderful magazine publish uninteresting ramblings from me, I am going on sabbatical for a while. I want to especially thank Robbie and Rhonda for all of your love and support through these many years~ I will return!
