Tarot Profiles of the U.S. Presidential Candidates:
Mitt Romney

|

As I prepared to write this month’s article discussing the Tarot profile of Mitt Romney, before I looked up his birthday and based only on my observations of him, I made a guess as to his cards.
You see, this is the second in a series looking at the presidential candidates in terms of their Birth cards of the Tarot. Based on the numerology of your date of birth, you have a Soul card (the Major Arcana one-digit card that your date of birth reduces to) and a Personality Card (if your birthday also reduces to a two-digit number that corresponds to a card in the Major Arcana).
I guessed correctly that Mitt is the Tarot profile combination of The Moon/Hermit.
Born on March 12, 1947, Romney’s profile works out as follows:
3
12
+ 1947
______
1962
We then add the digits of 1+9+6+2 = 18. This is a two-digit number that corresponds to the higher numbers of the Major Arcana of the Tarot, and is given to The Moon card. Then, when we reduce the 18 to a single digit, the 9 is The Hermit.
So his Soul card, the card associated with his core being in this lifetime, is The Hermit. His Personality card, the card that reveals how his personality is formed and adapts to his life circumstances, is The Moon.
Why did I already suppose Mitt Romney was this combination?
It isn’t that I knew so much about him. But I have many Moon/Hermit friends, and they all seem to have similar characteristics we can see in these two cards.
For instance, despite sometimes having a very public persona, Moon/Hermit people tend to be deeply private. Driven by their values and idealism, they can be prone to periods of introspection and withdrawal. They need time and space for retreat.
With a strong tendency towards mysticism and a rich, imaginative inner life, Moon/Hermit people are gentle, intuitive souls. Not always the most steadfast or dependable, they more than compensate for this with their wisdom and vision. And their spiritual life is usually a high priority.
Is all this true for Mitt Romney?
Well, unlike for most of the other candidates, most average Americans can probably name his religious faith. He is a sixth generation member of the Church of Latter Day Saints.
This is so well known of course, because his Mormon faith is considered controversial to many, particularly some of the more conservative Christian fundamentalists in the Republican base.
So in a typical Moon/Hermit fashion, he avoids discussing the inner workings of the church or his own private beliefs and experiences.
But there can be no doubt that his commitment to his spirituality is deep. He spent two and a half years in France as a missionary, attempting to convert the French to the Mormon faith. His devotion eventually landed him the job of assistant to the mission president in Paris, the highest position possible for a missionary.
A tragic accident while he was there also impacted his faith for the rest of his life. A Citroen he was driving with five passengers was hit head-on by a drunk driver and he was thrown from the vehicle. One of the passengers died.
A policeman on the scene believed Romney was dead and wrote “Il est mort” on his passport. Only later was he found to be alive by Sargent Shriver, Maria Shriver’s father, friend of Romney’s father and the U.S. ambassador to France at the time. In an interview, Romney reminisced, “after having been only a half-hearted Mormon growing up .. [being on the mission in France], it became much deeper." (1)
Later, even in the midst of building his multi-million dollar business empire, he found the time to be the lay bishop of his local Mormon congregation.
And a 2007 article in the Boston Globe describes how, “the church was at the center of the family's spiritual and social lives. Before high school every day, the boys went to a neighbor's house for ‘seminary,’ where they would discuss scripture for 45 minutes. Sunday mornings were spent in church, and Sunday afternoons were devoted to volunteer work. Tuesday evening ‘mutual’ brought together church families for basketball games and cookouts.” (2)
Although reluctant to discuss his personal spirituality or the positions of the Latter Day Saints church, Romney instead has promised that he would always serve the U.S. Constitution and the tenets of his public office first, before the doctrine of any religious body, including, presumably, the LDS.
The Hermit As Soul Card
Mary K. Greer, one of the earliest instructors of the birth card Tarot interpretations, writes that the mission of the Hermit as Soul Card is “Completing karma through service; looking within; the Seeker.” (3)
She goes on to write that, “‘Showing the way’ is [the Hermit’s] characteristic action” and she notes that sooner or later they become role models and teachers for others.
But while they have great patience and intuitive insight, they can be perfectionists with high expectations for themselves and others. Thus they are not always forgiving of the foibles of lesser mortals.
Hermit people often base their lives on powerful role models, and this is certainly true of Mitt Romney. He idolized his successful father, George Romney, who was a moderate “Rockefeller Republican,” and who amassed a large fortune as an automobile industry magnate during World War II, going on to become CEO of American Motors and Governor of Michigan in the early 1960s.
Prudent and not fond of risk-taking, the Hermit prefers blending in with the crowd rather than engaging in flamboyant behavior. Romney went to college during the height of the 60s rebelliousness, but never joined the counter-culture scene. He is remembered as a hard-working, button-down type in stark contrast to his edgier counterparts.
His mature work ethic in college and his single-minded drive to succeed and even exceed his father’s fame are hallmarks of a Hermit on a mission.
But while they are not the dramatic radicals, Hermits shun dogma, and can step away from the crowd by having their own personal opinions, usually formed by their wide range of life experiences.
For instance, bucking the trend of the other Republican candidates, Romney is not afraid to break ranks with the Tea Party line. Instead, he declares his own independent points of view.
In one controversial example, although he declares himself to be pro-life, he also supports women’s access to safe, legal abortions. In true Hermit fashion, he has arrived at this view from his own life journeys, based on “a dear, close family relative …who passed away from an illegal abortion.” (4)
Similarly, he has not won friends among those who condemn homosexuality. While he does not support same-sex marriage, he is much more tolerant than many of the other frontrunners and has supported domestic partnership benefits and equal rights for gays.
Sticking to relatively middle-of-the-road opinions, he has angered more conservative elements by supporting stem-cell research. And, unlike his apparent main rival, Rick Perry, Romney does not wish to eradicate Social Security and he does not deny the science of global warming or evolution.
Hermits are not fond of the spotlight for its own sake. But they can find themselves there, driven by their deep integrity, their desire to emulate their role models, and their own sense of destiny.
The Moon as the Personality Card
While the Hermit is Mitt Romney’s Soul Card, his Personality Card is The Moon.
This is a card that, because he has been in the public spotlight his entire life, may at first be hard to recognize in Mitt Romney. But if we look closely, there are a few clues.
Mary Greer tells us that The Moon is about “Completing Karma through Evolution, Journeying Within, the Source.” (5)
The Moon, a “nighttime” card of the Major Arcana, represents the personality that Hermit people may adopt as they journey and mature in this lifetime.
“The Moon,” Greer notes, “relates to past lives, to magic and mystery.”
Here the subconscious is activated, we are pulled by invisible tides, secret longings, and ancient soul memories.
Certainly, as a very powerful public figure with aspirations to the White House, Mitt Romney is unlikely to disclose his mystical or occult leanings. But despite his playing down his religious faith, there is much within the Church of the Latter Day Saints that could resonate with a Moon personality.
For instance, its very foundation is the mystical revelation given to Joseph Smith by “two personages whose brightness and glory defy all description,” (6) to restore the true church of Christianity.
And although current public policy in the church shuns the notion of reincarnation as a “doctrine of devils,” the case has been made by one LDS member that the Church's doctrines of premortal existence and eternal progression are remnants of founder Joseph Smith's original ideas about soul rebirth. In other words, a doctrine of reincarnation (although he did not call it that), that he taught trusted followers after 1841. (7)
Be that as it may, it is true that Moon-Hermit people are powerfully intuitive, and tuned into the mysterious power of change. Although some traditional Tarot interpretations of The Moon card warn us of deception and illusions, Greer notes that Moon personalities do not “represent deception; it is the ‘glamour’ in which we wrap ourselves that deceives us.”
We well know that that Mitt Romney was born into a family of wealth and privilege and has gone on to amass his own fortune in business, which later fueled his senatorial, gubernatorial and presidential bids.
But he has struggled in his attempts to create a persona of “Joe Average.” His well-publicized meals at Subway, flights on Southwest Airlines in coach, and his defense of bulldozing and doubling (actually, quadrupling, if you count basement and garage space) the size of his oceanfront mansion are typical of his Moon personality. These are attempts to downplay the contrasts in someone whose life never was, and certainly is not now, anything like most of middle America’s experience.
Another Moon trait is changeableness, and certainly, his critics like to point out that his opinions and views have often changed over time. For as the Moon goes through cycles, people with this personality may also change, often in patterns, if one watches them closely.
Although he had agreed that global climate change was an important issue, and was a supporter of the carbon cap and trade agreements, he has more recently backed away, leaving both conservatives and progressives rather confused as to where he actually stands on this issue. (8)
While more cynical observers might label this as caving to expediency, the truth is that Moon personalities are simply comfortable with changing their minds. In their world, this just makes sense. They don’t see themselves as inconsistent; they are following the path of enlightenment, which often requires that they cannot be rigid in their beliefs, but must be open to what feels right deep within the psyche.
Moon personality people do not mean to seem disloyal, but they can be moody and changeable. One moment, they are passionate, enthusiastic supporters of the cause du jour. Then, suddenly, they have lost interest and are on to something else, or in some cases, nowhere to be found.
They can swing from loony humor to deep introspection and withdrawal at a breathtaking pace. At their worst, they are fickle.
Their dream time and personal psychic awareness are usually legendary, but with a figure as pubic as Romney, such intimate details are unlikely to ever be known.
As a Moon/Hermit profile, Mitt Romney is a man on a quiet, deeply committed journey. Eschewing the more melodramatic behavior of his rivals, he presents a calm, competent, temperate persona.
He is a tireless traveler, at home with constantly changing circumstances. His Hermit side is on a soulful mission, and he stands upon the mountaintop holding his lantern aloft, like Diogenes, in search of an honest man. His Moon personality makes it his life’s challenge to find and reveal that the honest man he seeks is within himself.
Next month, we’ll have a look at one of Romney’s strongest opponents, Rick Perry.

For nearly four decades, Beth Owl's Daughter has been a practicing seer and guide in the non-ordinary realms. After being fascinated by the I Ching and astrology (calculating charts by hand, mind you, and with a life-long aversion to math!), one day in 1972, Beth stumbled upon the first Tarot deck she had ever seen: the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot.
It was love at first sight, and evidently the feeling was mutual, because ever since, the Tarot has been a profound, lifelong friend and guide for her and for those with whom she shares her gifts.
