Getting To
Know Your Inner Emperor
by Beth Owl's Daughter
The numerology of any particular year corresponds to the cards of the Tarot. In particular, it is helpful to focus on the Major Arcana (the trumps), since they are the cards that most directly reflect karma and the work of the soul. So, by reducing 2+0+1+1 to the number 4, we can learn a great deal about the general traits and patterns that can be anticipated in a given year. Four corresponds to the Emperor of the Major Arcana.

As we are now over half-way through the year, it might be helpful to know how to work with this powerful energy while we have the opportunity. There will not be another Emperor Year until 2200.

Last month, I offered a general introduction to characteristics of The Emperor, as well as how his energy might play out in world events. But besides the possible implications on a global level, the Emperor may have a significant impact on your own life. This month, let’s get a little more personal with him, shall we?

The Emperor and You

The Builder © The Gaian Tarot by Joanna Powell Colbert, Llewellyn Publications

Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.
~ Abraham Lincoln

On a personal basis, this is a great year to commit to the mastery of your chosen profession. What worlds do you want to conquer? Are you being challenged to step up as a leader, an innovator, or pioneer? Set big goals and see how powerfully and quickly you can move towards them!

During an Emperor Year, you may be called into a role of greater responsibility — at work, at school, or perhaps in your community or family. Pay attention that you not turn bossy, or tyrannical. Instead use your power gently, with honesty and integrity. The wise Emperor knows exactly who he is and is at home with the vast reach of his power. He rarely needs to “pull rank” in order to get the job done.

Have you ever thought about your leadership style? How comfortable are you with sharing your authority? Do you find it easy to delegate, or do you sometimes micro-manage or find yourself taking back the task because only you know how to do it “right?”

The Emperor knows he is not the Lone Ranger. His success often depends on the strength of his support team, so that he is freed up to explore, experiment, and break new ground. Good leaders make the development of a strong, trustworthy team a top priority. And rather than devaluing alternative methods they themselves might not have chosen, the Emperor rewards innovation, ownership and accountability from his group.

Similarly, you may find yourself dealing with other authority figures. Perhaps you will have to navigate your way through some bureaucratic chain of command. Or you may have issues with the people you report to at work or school. You may also find that it is increasingly difficult to take orders, especially if you have questions about the competence or the validity of someone’s higher ranking role.

Okay, so maybe you really could do a better job. So, what are you doing to make that happen?

As the Empress Year was defined by the energy of the Great Mother, the Emperor is the Good Father. During this time, then, you may have reminders that come up regarding your own father, whether or not he is still living. How are you like, or unlike him? What advice do you wish he could give you?

In our culture, the father’s role tends to be about loving guidance, protection and setting the rules and structure that urge us to excellence. How do you offer this to others? Where or from whom might you receive such blessings in your life?

What boundary issues do you need to resolve once and for all? And in what ways is it time to get better organized? There are lessons to be learned about how to use less emotion, more logic, “play the game,” and make clear, firm decisions that create more stability in your life.

Another way of understanding how the Emperor impacts you personally is to know your personal Tarot year for 2011. The Emperor will interact with you in ways that may challenge, teach or augment your Tarot year’s energy.

To understand this, suppose your birthday is May 9. This year, you are having your Hermit Year because 5+9+2011=2025 and 2+0+2+5=9. Nine is The Hermit.

In what ways might the energy of The Hermit connect and relate to The Emperor? At first glance, they may seem very different from one another. But the Emperor’s leadership and drive to excellence could intertwine quite productively with the Hermit’s quiet, spiritual side.

Perhaps this year you will become an adept in some form of meditation. You might find yourself leading others on spiritual retreats. Or the two influences might combine as you achieve recognition as a champion for peace or nonviolence.

The Emperor’s Legacy

Last but not least, in the journey of the Emperor year, you may confront situations that ask how you will use your remaining time on this Earth, especially in terms of leaving a lasting, valuable legacy.

Emperors are often driven to greatness by their issues around their own mortality. That’s because the Emperor’s complementary card of the Major Arcana is Death (13, which is the Death card = 1+3, which is 4 – The Emperor).

Not only would this be a smart time to update your will, organize your final wishes and other paperwork, and make clear to those you love what you wish to bestow after your time here is over. It’s also a powerful opportunity to get more disciplined in the areas of your life that are important to you.

The Emperor Year urges us to think about what we came into this life to accomplish. What will you do in the days ahead to leave your unique mark in the halls of time?

Use this time to set long-term, even lifetime goals and then begin building the foundation to make them happen.

Meditations and Affirmations As You Journey With The Emperor

Yours is the gift to build, choose, and make something powerful and important in the world. The Emperor can show you how to develop your gifts of discipline, logic and reason, inventiveness, and making responsible choices. This is a great year to push past your comfort zone and commit yourself to excellence.

On a regular basis throughout the year, take some time to retreat to a quiet space. Light a candle, breathe in the scent of incense, or find your center in whatever ways are traditional to you.

Either in meditation, or while journaling, consider these questions:

• What do I believe about power? Good? Bad? That it ultimately corrupts?

• Where does power come from?

• Where does my power lie?

• How do I establish my personal authority, especially in a new or unfamiliar situation?

• Who are my role models for the right use of power and authority?

• In what ways am I being called to step into a leadership role now?

• How comfortable am I with the idea of doing so? Why or why not?

• What have I learned about having good boundaries?

• What kinds of power struggles have I ever found myself in? What did I do well? With the benefit of hindsight, what would I wish to change?

• How do I feel about my responsibilities towards others?

• How can I tap into the loving Father energy in my soul?

• How am I like my father? How am I different? If I could ask him anything and know he would answer me candidly and completely, what would I ask?

• If I could have a long chat with some of the most famous or admired leaders in history, who would they be? What would I ask them?

• Figure out what your Tarot year is by adding your birthday month and day with the year 2011. Then reduce that number to a figure between 1 and 22. That will be your Tarot year. The previous example I gave was the Hermit year.

Another example might be July 21. You would therefore add: 7 + 21 + 2011= 2039. 2+3+9=14. So the Tarot year would be 14 – the Major Arcana card, Temperance.

Once you have yours figured out, you might meditate on how you’d imagine the Emperor interacting with the archetype of your own Tarot year?

Affirmations for the Emperor Year:

* I choose to embrace the truth of my authority.

* I am sovereign to myself. Therefore, I know it is not unkind to make my boundaries and limits clear and inviolate.

* I am at ease with my ability to step up and lead where I am needed.

* I make clear, strong decisions with ease.

* I see things from a wide perspective and easily inspire others

* I live in accordance with the greater good for all, including those yet to be born.

I hope that, in what remains of this very unique time, you will take this chance to tap into your own personal greatness and create a legacy of brilliance for a world that truly needs it.

For nearly four decades, Beth Owl's Daughter has been a practicing seer and guide in the non-ordinary realms. After being fascinated by the I Ching and astrology (calculating charts by hand, mind you, and with a life-long aversion to math!), one day in 1972, Beth stumbled upon the first Tarot deck she had ever seen: the Rider-Waite-Smith Tarot.

It was love at first sight, and evidently the feeling was mutual, because ever since, the Tarot has been a profound, lifelong friend and guide for her and for those with whom she shares her gifts.
