Astrology Notes: Astrology, Healing and the Evolution of Consciousness

Saturn and Chiron:
Forcing the Hand of Love
Part 1

by Martin Lass
Introduction

First, note that this article follows on from my Harmonic Concordance article posted on this site in November.

In the last so many months, I have kept hearing people's stories of deaths in the family, sicknesses, losses, major calamities and grief. I have had my own dramas and challenges, as well, involving the threat of the loss of someone close to me. During these months, many of us might have been asking, "What is going on?" In retrospect, we might still be asking, "What was that all about?"

In short, from a planetary perspective, Saturn and Chiron have been opposing each other. The focal dates were Sep 25 and Oct 23 (2003). Perhaps it would be wise to consider all that this planetary aspect encompasses, seeing as we are going to get a second dose this year (2004). The next focal dates are Aug 15 and Dec 27 (2004).

Background

Saturn is the planet of the material world, as opposed to the Sun, which is the planet of the spiritual world. Saturn is the 'incoming' portal for spirit to enter the material realms. In this way, its themes are practicality, construction, organization, structure, responsibility, seriousness, effort, and so on, all to do with the practical, material world.

Psychologically, Saturn is about seriousness, discipline, responsibility, limitations, restrictions, challenges, blockages, tough love, hard knocks and difficult lessons.

Saturn in Cancer (for the entire time of this aspect) represents all of the above in relation to close family and in relation to the themes of caring (or lack of caring), nurturing (or lack of nurturing), belonging (or not belonging), emotional safety and so on.

Chiron is the planet of our deepest Wounds-the painful things in our lives that we would rather not have to feel and so bury, avoid, ignore, deny or otherwise condemn for the most part. On the other side, Chiron is the planet of Healing-the Healing of our pain, fragmentedness, disconnectedness, unresolved grief and loss, insecurities, lopsided perceptions about past events and circumstances, and so on.

Chiron's final goal for us is to help us put the pieces of our lives-the pieces of ourselves-back together; it is for us to become whole once more, but consciously so, as 'experienced angels of light' rather than as nascent (sleeping, naïve) angels of light.

Chiron in Capricorn (for the entire time of this aspect) is in Saturn's ruling sign. This, in itself, is interesting, as we shall see. Chiron in Capricorn is about pain, missingness, loss, grief, disconnectedness, misperceptions, judgments and blame in the area of the material world-in the area of the material illusion. It challenges us to look beyond the material illusion and see the eternal essence behind all things, places, events, circumstances and, most importantly, people. It challenges us to see the benefits, blessings, lessons and gifts behind those things in our lives that we think brought us only pain, hardship, suffering, grief, limitation, restriction, and so on.

The Opposition

To understand the opposition of Chiron and Saturn, in Capricorn and Cancer, respectively, let me quote from a previous article on this site (November, 2003):

The outward expressions of the current Chiron/Saturn opposition are blame and judgment.

In our personal lives, we blame and judge (negatively) caregivers for what they did for us (badly executed or misguided actions), for what they didn't do for us (things they apparently neglected or simply denied us), for what they did to us (causing pain and so forth) and for what they didn't do to us (as in apparent absence of things like physical affection).

In short, there is a part of us that believes that everything is somebody else's fault-our lives, as well as the way we are. What's more, we say we can show proof of this by offering examples of cause and effect. For example, if my father beat me when I was a child (cause), maybe now I'm afraid of authority and have trouble standing up for myself (effect). Or, if my mother never showed me physical affection (cause), maybe now I can't show affection for others (effect).

Saturn and Chiron say these excuses are excuses-they are illusions. Cause and effect are illusions. (This view is supported by the latest discoveries in quantum physics and the latest theories about the true nature of the world around us.) These illusions dishonor our true nature, our true potential and the outward expression of our true calling in life. They are symptoms of not listening to ourselves-not listening to our inner voice.

Leading on from this, what happens when we don't listen to our inner voice and when we can't see how we ourselves had a place and a part in those things, events, circumstance and people we blame for our lives being what they are (or what they are not or should have been)? What happens when we cannot see the benefits, blessings, lessons and gifts behind the otherwise painful and supposedly unjust circumstances and events of our lives?

In short, life deals us a hand that illuminates these issues. Whether we are willing to deal with the issues or not is quite another thing.

In Saturn's case, the hand we are dealt will necessarily involve restrictions, limitations, blockages, delays, bondage (metaphorically), and, overall, some pretty tough lessons. When we put Chiron into the equation, we get things, events, circumstances and people in our lives that illuminate all our issues by threatening to take away the things we love the most, but are not fully appreciating or take away the things we are not loving or appreciating at all. It does this by forcing us to sit down and reassess our perspectives on things and by not letting us get up until we have done so.

In short, when we do not acknowledge our love and appreciation for those close to us-those who were or are our caregivers in some form-they may be taken away from us. Or, in the least, it may appear that they will be taken away from us. Alternatively, we ourselves may be put in a situation where it forces us to reassess our love and appreciation (or lack thereof) for these others and for the events and circumstances 'created' by these others.

Before we get too intellectual about all this, let me give an example. A person I know recently went to the hospital with tightness in the chest, jaw and left arm. The diagnosis: angina, severely restricted arteries of the heart and the need for open-heart surgery and multiple bypasses. The person had apparently had no symptoms before this. However, this was not true, in the end. They had merely been ignoring the symptoms, hoping that they would go away, not taking it seriously and not telling anyone about them. (Here's a practical warning to us all.)

The condition was attributed to a lack of exercise, bad eating habits and hypertension (with associated high blood pressure). In short, the person was a typical Type A person, working in a sedentary but high-stress business profession.

However, these so-called causes were themselves symptoms, as the person in question understood as a result of the whole saga. We have said that Chiron opposing Saturn is about blame and judgment. Blame and judgment are about withholding our love. In particular, given the sign placements of these planets, aforementioned, it is about withholding our love from our caregivers, past or present, due to our blame and judgments.

Without being aware (consciously, anyway) of these planetary influences, this person realized that their condition was a direct result of long-standing issues with their natural mother, who had left them when they were in their early teens. (The blockages were in the first junction of the aorta, where it splits into two main arteries. This is big-time denial of love.) They could not acknowledge any love for their mother, because of their judgments and blame.

When we withhold our love, it constricts the energetic heart, manifesting in living habits (addictions to substitutes for love) and hypertensions (stress being the symptom of unresolved issues) that, in turn create blocked arteries and heart disease. (Herein lies the correct connection and correspondence between the mind, the body and diseases, for those who might interested! More on this subject can be found in my book, "Mirror, Mirror, Body and Mind,"-the second in my Chiron series, "Musings of a Rogue Comet".)

Not only this, but this aspect of Saturn and Chiron was transiting this person's natal Venus (the planet of earthly love)-Chiron making a transiting conjunction to natal Venus with Saturn opposing. An accident? I think not.

This bring us to the next point. The planetary opposition itself is one thing and has a general affect on us all, personally and collectively. (We could outline some of the global events related to this planetary aspect, but this goes beyond the scope of this short piece.) How this planetary opposition sets off our natal planets is another thing and more relevant to our personal lives.

If Chiron and/or Saturn make hard transiting aspects to our natal planets, then the effect is direct and will undoubtedly be seen and felt in the tangible events and circumstances of our lives-as in the life of our example person above. However, even if hard-aspect transits are not made, this planetary aspect will still set off our natal Chiron and Saturn issues (albeit to a lesser degree). It's a matter of resonance, like when guitar strings resonate in sympathy with somebody playing another instrument or singing.

So, wanting to understand the events and circumstances of what went on during the final months of last year and wanting to be prepared for the return of this planetary aspect later this year, it might be wise to look at how these planets will set off their natal counterparts, whether directly or by resonance.

This will be the subject of next month's article. We will look at the Chiron/Saturn opposition and how it sets off natal Chiron and natal Saturn in each of the signs. So, before next month, if you don't know already, find out where your natal Chiron and Saturn are so you can match it up with the interpretations that will be presented.

In the meantime, know that Saturn and Chiron tell us that all things happen for a reason and the reason is always love, whether we can see it right now or not.

Losses or threat of losses-of things or people-force us to sit down, find new appreciation for these things and people and, ultimately, force our hand, showing us that, in the final analysis, there is only love in our hearts. We just couldn't see it through our blame and judgment.

Love and light to all!
