Astrologer's Notes:
Prediction Magic - The Marriage of Transits & Solar Arcs
by Basil Fearrington
Combining Solar Arcs and Transits

The natal horoscope is much like a loaded gun: the bullets are in the gun and the finger is on the trigger. Solar Arcs suggest symbolically the aim we take with the gun and the transits are the actual trigger. In practice, look for the strong Solar Arc measurement. It will highlight a specific year in time (8 months before and 4 months after the aspect is exact). Then, look for the strong transit (or SP Moon to an Angle) within that year as the point within the year when the arc's promise is fulfilled. This is the one-two punch that gives the predictive magic of transits and Solar Arcs. It is important to understand that although this system is often times accurate to the month, it is better to see these as markers of a general period in time. The arc gets you to the year. The transit defines it down to the month.

For example, the assassination of John F. Kennedy was a huge event in the life of his wife. If you have ever looked closely at the Zapruder film copy of the shooting, you see that Jackie was just inches away from being shot herself. This was a titanic event in her life.

When we go back to that period in time (November, 1963), we look for a strong arc
(Fig 3). In June, 1964 (7 months after the assassination), we see SA Mars exactly square natal Pluto! If ever there was an aspect symbolizing this event, it would be a difficult relationship between Mars and Pluto. It is important to note that Pluto is in Jackie's 8th House, the House that symbolizes affairs of death. Since Jackie has a Scorpio Ascendant, any hard aspect contact to Pluto would go right to her core.

Figure 3

But you say, "Kennedy was killed in November, 1963, not June, 1964." Remember, we have an 8 month orb going into and coming out of partile aspect exactness. That would take us back to November as the point in time when the aspect started to form and when we look for the strong transit, we see transiting Saturn squaring the Ascendant early in December.

Manhattan and 9/11

The Solar Arc measurements connected to the 911 tragedy are most remarkable. The data for Manhattan was brought to us through the hard work of researcher, Marc Penfield. The data is, May 16, 1626 at 9:33 AM in Manhattan. The astrology of all this is nothing short of fantastic! (Fig 4). When we focus on September11, 2001, this horoscope shows the following:

SA Mars squares the Midheaven (assertive attack)

SA Neptune conjoins the Ascendant (subterfuge; collusion; loss)

SA Pluto = Venus (Venus is ruler of IV so this represents a complete metamorphosis on the home front, which means the city of Manhattan).

The arcs listed above were all applying, all in the process of becoming. (The transit of Uranus opposed to natal Uranus was EXACT that September. It ignited the potential of arcs. There can be no clearer a picture of a surprise attack using subterfuge).

Ben Affleck

Actor Ben Affleck was born August 15, 1972, 2:53 AM, PDT in Berkley, California. As you know, he has been in a relationship with the beautiful Jennifer Lopez. The two have recently announced plans to get married in the latter part of 2003.

Affleck's horoscope
(Fig 5, inner ring) reveals a Cancer Ascendant with Venus closely conjunct. This is an indication of his need for emotional security within relationships. The Venus position upon the Ascendant is also quite symbolic of the actor's appeal to women. If Affleck and Lopez get married, it will be Lopez's third marriage amidst a countless number of well publicized relationships including one with rap artist now record and fashion mogul, Sean Combs. The marriage will be Affleck's first and is therefore more meaningful in potential.

Figure 5

In analytical preparation, I run a list of measurements (Fig 6) that combine transits, Solar Arcs, and the SP Moon. Since the marriage is scheduled for September, we are primarily concerned with what is happening in Affleck's horoscope in 2003. Marriage should be a major event in one's life. There should be reflections of the potential for marriage shown in the horoscope (if it is meaningful to the person). When the measurements do not confirm marriage, it doesn't necessarily mean that marriage won't take place. Rather it suggests that it is not the right time to get married or that the marriage may not happen as scheduled.

Figure 6

Looking at Affleck's astrological measurements, right off the bat, staring at you, blinking in huge neon lights is the transit of Pluto opposing Affleck's Saturn. Saturn rules VII and this transit lasts all of next year. This is instantly ominous because under most circumstances, this transit reflects difficulties, loss, hard work, etc. The transit or arc of Pluto to Saturn is the most difficult aspect there is in the entire lexicon of aspects. In this case, there are two obvious possibilities: On a positive note, Affleck experiences a complete catharsis through this relationship. The other possibility is that the relationship ends and ends badly.

Following just behind the Pluto-Saturn transit is Pluto's transit square to the Midheaven (natal Saturn squares the Midheaven). This suggests a major change of status in the world. Could that change be marriage or is career heartbreak ahead? Might there be an illness that threatens the career? These are the kinds of things that happen cerebrally in the preparation for consultation.

Moving on, we see transiting Neptune opposing Mercury. This could be very productive for someone who makes a living using Neptune energies. Otherwise, we expect the sense of muddled thinking, idealism and deception through the idealism. Through this aspect, we can feel Affleck's mind enshrouded in shrangi-la, in beautiful thoughts that cloud his judgement.

Next is transiting Uranus opposing Mars. Just FEEL that. Feel Uranus intensifying that Mars energy and all of the temperamental explosions that occur when Mars is zapped and electrified. Know that Mars rules XI, the love that Affleck hopes to receive. This aspect is separative in nature. It is followed shortly thereafter by a powerful midpoint symbolism, SA Pluto=Sun/Venus (this means that Pluto has arced to apposition where it is making hard aspect contact with the midpoint position of the Sun and Venus. It operates as though the three are in conjunction). This is romance and relationship in high gear, perhaps to a point of being out of perspective because of the difficulty in fulfilling what is desired. This occurs with SA Mercury=Saturn/Neptune, which is the sense of mental anguish.

Challenging measurements continue to mount up: tr. Saturn sq. Pluto is just a shade less ominous that transiting Pluto opposed Saturn. That the two occur simultaneously is almost scary; tr. Sat opp Jupiter, and a second pass of tr. Pluto sq MC, retrograding to another pass of the opposition to Saturn. And then, seemingly unfitting, is the transit of Jupiter to Affleck's Sun! A look at Affleck's midpoint Sort shows Sun=Venus/Uranus=Jupiter/Uranus. The natal Sun is trined by Jupiter. This is a good-looking Sun, yet, this fortuitous transit is surrounded by much that is threatening. In my experience, this can be likened to the hand that appears out of the boat just as you are about to go down for the third time.

All of this climaxes in August when transiting Saturn conjoins Venus and the Ascendant!!!! Venus co-rules XI and rules V, important Houses in the scheme of love. Lastly, SP Moon is exactly opposed Saturn, also in August. The conjunction, square and opposition of SP Moon to Saturn is always extremely important. Reality and personal needs are battling. The environment forces a showdown and the result is often manifested as advancement for an ambitious person. It is always a time of importance, especially in the six months leading up to it. August 2003 is an important time for Affleck.

All of the above occurs under the umbrella of SA Mars=Pluto, exact in November, 2003 (occurring at the same time as transiting Pluto's last hit to opposition with Saturn)! Pluto is in Affleck's 4th House and co-rules the 5th. This represents an attack of some kind upon a parent or aggression and bombast in relationship to romance. A strong echo of this is shown late in October with SA Sun=Mars/Uranus, which suggests an illumination of the relationship between Mars and Uranus. This is anger, temperament, etc. With the Pluto-Saturn transit, the Saturn-Pluto transit, and the SP Moon-Saturn contact, so much is under tension regarding Affleck's relationship index. (Saturn placed in XII under so much focused attention is also an indication of critical health issues. If Affleck was an elderly man, this potential would be raised but he is a young, virile, healthy man so we don't pay as much attention to the critical illness potential).

The strong arc of Mars to Pluto is the height of bombast. It is punctuated all year by Pluto to Saturn and, most importantly, by Saturn's contact to Affleck's Venus and Ascendant. The astrology suggests that Affleck is in for major disappointment. The symbols for marriage that we hope to find are not there and even more, the measurements suggest frustration and loss rather than romantic bliss.

Create Your Own Magic

Please use this technique in your life! Look for the direct arc. Know that it covers a 12 month period, 8 months before and 4 months after the aspect is exact (the application is always stronger than the separation). Then find the strong transit (or SP Moon aspect) and zero in on that time period. Look in the past for these occurrences. You will be delighted with your results and will have gained enormous insight into your life and the lives of those around you
