World Healing Day 2003
A Global Event is Born !
From a single man's search to heal from stress, comes a global movement to heal the stresses of humanity. World Healing Day 2003
"If we want to make something truly spectacular of our world, there is nothing whatsoever that can stop us."
-- Ranier Maria Rilke
It is time for the world to re-focus on healing. 50 nations and 600 cities will unfold a mass desire to re-focus humanity's attention on April 12th, 2003, at 10 am worldwide.
In Chinese philosophy, it is understood that within each of us is the seed of all humanity, just as within each cell is the DNA seed of our whole body. Twenty years ago, I set out on a quest to find peace and healing in my own life. This personal journey has taken that rivulet of healing I sought, and spread it across the planet as I connected with tens of thousands worldwide who are seeking the same healing, the same peace, for themselves and for our precious blue home we call "earth."
Six years ago the lawn of the Nelson-Atkins Art Museum, in downtown Kansas City, glimmered with dew refracting silent crystalline sunlight on a perfect April morning. Then people began to arrive in twos and threes, until 200 people had assembled on the rolling green lawn between the white shuttle-cocks to silently begin a mass exhibition of the natural health and healing art/science of T'ai Chi and Qigong. Television crews amassed to record and broadcast the event, as photographers and reporters did their thing as well. The Kansas City event was picked up by FOX National News, and by CNN to broadcast around the world.
The phone in our office began to ring off the hook and emails poured in from worldwide, from others who wanted to participate in this unique event. The next year it was held in 12 countries, the next in 25, and grew until this year's event now has nearly 50 nations and 600 cities involved. Millions were educated to the healing benefits of T'ai Chi and Qigong, as feature interviews on this event were published in The New York Times, The South China Morning Post, and in media worldwide.
I began to realize something huge had unfolded on this beautiful Kansas City morning, which was bigger than T'ai Chi and Qigong. Then the idea hit me square in the middle of my mind, as the big ideas usually do. And that message was, "Create World Healing Day!" Encompassing all of the natural health, environmental healing, social and human rights healing, and prayer for healing, desires of humanity into one mass event. From that idea the world event was born. I created www.worldhealingday.org, and when I built it, like Kevin Costner's field of dreams . . . the people came . . . from all corners of the earth to express in their own unique ways acts of personal and global healing.
At this time in world history humanity is at pinnacle, a vortex, a precipice. We are feeling stress unlike any generation before on an endless daily basis. The information age has thrown us headlong into a wave of change that is testing us at all levels. Stress is causing most illness, and exploding the rate of suicide. Many of our children see little hope for their future, as wars fill the headlines, and the world seems to spin along even as polar icecaps melt and the globe warms with unimaginable consequences they prefer not to think about. We, as human beings, are being stretched as thinly as we can possibly be. We are being squeezed through the birth canal of becoming what we are destined to become. It is terrible, and beautiful, extreme and extraordinary.
"We are living in a moment where hope and history rhyme."
-- Seamus Heaney, Irish Nobel Laureate
WHAT MUST BECOME APPARENT TO ALL QUICKLY, is that the solutions to the seemingly insurmountable problems facing society and the world have solutions, simple and profound, hanging like ripe luscious fruits beyond the edge of our awareness waiting for us to look up and pluck them. With slight shifts in spending priorities as nations we have the technology and the ability feed all the world's hungry, house all the world's homeless, create clean cheap energy, and clean the pollution from the world . . . yet, we don't do this. Why?
The limitations are not physical, but a matter of the focus of our consciousness. The same technology that offers such hope, also offers the seeds of our destruction, if this is how we unleash them. Einstein once wrote, "World War III will be fought with nuclear weapons, however World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones." Reverend Billy Graham once said that if we destroy the world it will not be because of God's will, but because of the ignorance of man. We are at a crossroads of humanity. It is time for us to decide which road we will go down.
"With the splitting of the atom, everything has changed
. . . save our way of thinking."
--Albert Einstein
World Healing Day brings together people worldwide, people Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., called "those of good will." People across the planet who yearn for a new direction, a direction of health and healing for all of God's children will join together on April 12th, 2003 and exhibit many roads to healing for each of us as individuals, and for our nations and our planet. This celebration will begin down under in New Zealand, and then spread across the time zones and events unfolding in cities across Australia, Asia, Africa, Europe, North & South America, and setting with the final events in Hawaii.
There will be mass T'ai Chi exhibitions, Qigong (Chi Kung) exhibitions, Yoga events, natural health, human rights teach-ins, days of prayer and service, and as many other individual and global healing events as people can imagine. It is a day for all of us to . . . imagine . . . imagine what our world "could" be.
