Astrologer's Notes: Cosmic Creation

Jupiter in Leo, Saturn in Gemini - The Value of Uncertainty
by Jeff Jawer
Astrologers note when planets appear to change directions in the sky. These "stations" are powerful points that tend to intensify the planet in question's energy. On April 3, Jupiter turns direct in Leo, ending its recent retrograde period that began last December. Called the "Greater Benefic" in traditional astrology, this giant planet is associated with growth, expansion, opportunity and good luck. Its forward turn in the zodiac should, then, be considered a positive development. Ideally, Jupiter is a planet of wisdom and generosity, but it has its shadow side, too. It can be excessively moralistic and judgmental like an Old Testament prophet with God on his side. Jupiter is not a planet of nuance, but one that prefers to paint reality in broad strokes with grand truths and absolute answers.

Leo is the sign of the heart. Jupiter's direct turn here represents the potential for a great opening to love. But Leo's love can sometimes be self-aggrandizing, a kind of show or presentation that seeks applause, rather than mutual understanding. The connection is one-way, from stage to audience, without dialogue between the two. It can be a performance of naïve self-centeredness that precludes delving into the deeper complexities of human emotions. Learning how to listen and receive are vital to developing meaningful relationships, ones capable of acknowledging the diverse drives, needs and motivations of all individuals.

Leo is also a sign of courage, an essential element of which is fear. Without it, there is nothing to be courageous about. Bravery is the ability to act in spite of our fears. Bravado is the denial of them. It is a show of courage, rather than real courage itself. Righteous Jupiter's presence in Leo is often more about bravado than bravery. When fear is denied we lose sight of its real causes, making it likely that we will lash out at whatever handy target falls within our sights. This seems to be happening in the United States where surveys report that about half of Americans think that Iraq was involved in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This misinformation adds another level of justification for attacking Iraq. It's worth noting that Jupiter's station occurs directly opposite Neptune, planet of illusion (on bad days) and spirituality (on good ones). Neither Jupiter or Neptune is known for its grasp of details. The yearning for answers, for a final solution, can be an impediment to addressing those pesky little facts that contradict our beliefs.

Saturn is the planet of hard, cold reality. While Jupiter and Neptune have their hopes and dreams, their ultimate truths and illusions, Saturn represents the bottom line; it's where the rubber meets the road. Jupiter in Leo can make its promises supported by Neptune in Aquarius' idealistic dreams. Regardless of the belief system-political, religious, spiritual or economic-Saturn is reminding us to just so "no," or at least "maybe," rather than running to our favorite ideological recruiting office and signing up for the cause. That's because Saturn is now in dualistic Gemini where questions count more than answers, and where diversity is necessary. The bottom line is that there is no "one answer" or absolute truth, at least not one that can be contained in human language. Form, Saturn's domain, is not singular in Gemini, but a shifting web of ideas, moments, facts, fears and dreams. Movement and flexibility are the bricks of reality and truth that have the most value now. Singular judgments are not likely to produce tangible results of a positive nature. They lack the mobility to take form, to find traction and contribute to the world's wellbeing.

Gemini is a sign of communication. It is dialogue, in contrast to Leo's monologue. Its purpose is not to finalize discussions, but to continue them. Certainly, endless talk has its weakness, too. There are times when it is appropriate to shift from words to action. We cannot always consider all possibilities, but need to choose and move forward. However, that doesn't appear to be the case quite yet. Saturn in Gemini is still collecting data, struggling against the fearful rush of certainty to continue conversations among allies and enemies. There is great wisdom in knowing that we do not have all the answers, that no individual, nation or belief system is the ultimate arbiter of truth. Yes, fear drives us to close the books on uncertainty, to plunge into action, if only to release the incredible pressures of doubt. Yet planetary wisdom suggests that courage lies in finding harmony within the multi-colored spectrum of reality, rather than reducing life to the seemingly safe absolutism of black and white.
