Astrologer's Notes:
Memories: True or False?
by Diana Stone
Dateline May 2003. In the Great Northwest where I live, this is an inspiring month of nature at its most glorious. However, things are not always as they seem.

Sometimes it is necessary to deal with the dark underbelly of things that are not so obvious. That thought prompts this month's column.

I watched an interesting show on television recently. It was a fascinating documentary about the brain and memory. One segment featured a young woman who experienced vivid flashback memories of severe abuse by her father. Heretofore she remembered a childhood of happy family relationships with her parents and three sisters. She was in therapy and described the erupting memories in chilling detail.

Eventually the father was confronted and was forced to either admit guilt and agree to rehabilitation or face criminal charges in the courts. He was a minister and not surprisingly lost his job. The family was torn apart. The tragedy of the story is that the daughter's recollections were false memories. The woman herself came to realize that none of it was true. The other family members always vehemently denied any possibility of the alleged abuse.

There have been several occasions when one of my clients was faced with the horror of accusations of sexual abuse of a child. This has to be one of the worst crises to strike in the heart of a family unit. On the other hand, I have clients, too many, who report physical and sexual abuse at the hands of a parent. Every once in awhile, it just doesn't ring true. In such cases, I feel it is unethical for the astrologer to claim to confirm or deny it from the natal chart alone. And certainly one should never volunteer this in a natal reading during which the subject of abuse was never raised by the client. I know of a case where the astrologer predicted from a baby's chart that a parent would abuse it. If you are the client be aware that this is not something that can be identified with certainty from your birth chart.

I use horary charts to determine whether or not the claims are true if I am asked specifically. Several years ago a mother asked me if her teen-aged daughter's accusations about her father's abuse were true. We phrased the question, "Is the story true?" (It is a 3rd house question.) The chart revealed mythological themes that indicated the story was not true. The mother used this valuable information to understand how to proceed. The daughter later recanted, but the situation could have ended her marriage. Only experienced professional horary astrologers should accept this sort of question. In skilled hands, it can be a lifesaver.

A woman in the Midwest recently asked if her little two-year old granddaughter is a victim of abuse. The chart indicated abuse but urged caution in proceeding. She has consulted physicians and therapists and they confirmed her suspicions. She says she is petitioning for custody of the child. Had the chart not urged caution, she might have stirred up a hornet's nest with no proof. This way she has built a solid case. (She did win custody.)
