The Light
I have come to heal this world.
To show men what they already know.
To make the obvious apparent,
to drive common-sense home.
Until the anvil of consciousness splinters
Beneath the hammer of that sense.
And from that shattered anvil,
A simple steely truth shall be forged
. . . that when one of us suffers . . . so do we all.
-- Bill Douglas
One night, many years ago, I experienced an angelic visitation. In the dark of night "a voice" spoke in the center of my mind, saying, "I am about to show you what life could be like."
Then a light illuminated the center of my heart, and the center of my mind. This light expanded to encompass me, and just as suddenly . . . I became this expanding light, which filled my room, and expanded outward and upward. The ceiling of my room rushed towards me as I expanded outward, then the attic slats, and the limbs of the pine trees above my roof, the platinum clouds, and the velvet night sky rushed towards me. I reeled forward, outward, and upward encompassing the earth, and moving past the moon, on and on.
In that instant, I experienced the pain of a million grieving mothers, and the hope and love of a million new mothers holding their precious ones, I felt the calluses and dreams of the legions struggling to feed their families, and the pride of fathers seeing their sons become young men, and the anguish of fathers losing those sons to the desolation of war. All one love, pain, anguish, pride, and hope, undefined by black, brown, yellow, white, or national boundaries, only a human compassion so great it rent my heart into thousands of brilliant pieces all aching and limitless.
I saw in that instant that all human agony is so often self inflicted because our minds are unable to unlock from patterns of the past that no longer nurture. I felt the limitless hope that exists just beneath the thin veneer we think of as reality, and my heart nearly burst with sorrow knowing that all that we hope for our loved ones is so tangible . . . so achievable, . . . and yet so unattainable only because on some level we choose not to relax open to the limitless grace God offers us every instant of every expanding moment of our lives.
The clutching of oil, that unleashes wars, sucking the creativity and resources away from development of technologies that open doorways to limitless free and clean energy, are manacles we bind ourselves with. The prisons we endlessly lock our children away in, are walls that imprison us from the boundless creativity squeezed within the troubled souls we could be nurturing. Compassion could solve so many of the problems we see as insurmountable, and love holds the key to so many of the vault doors that hold miracles limitless and unimaginable behind their tumblers of consciousness. I saw it . . . I felt this truth welded into the atoms of my soul.
Manna from heaven waits just beyond the thin membranes of our tight consciousness . . . if we can, as a human race, . . . let go . . . and breathe . . . .release our grip on fear and hate . . . and realize that we are all one . . . many cells of the same living breathing miracle of humanity. Separation an illusion so easily seen through if we but let go of the squeezing, clutching . . . fearing doubt.
THEN, SUDDENLY in the midst of my expansion, I became afraid of this unknown limitlessness the angel had unlocked in me . . . and in the instant I feared, the light I had become collapsed. I hurtled downward and backward slamming back into my body as if some giant cosmic vault door had slammed shut, and found myself gasping for breath sitting bolt upright in my bed.
From that moment on, I began to re-define me. Seeing fear as a doorway to walk thru, rather than a prison wall. It has changed everything.
I wrote a poem about this event, this angelic message, and I offer it to you below. It is entitled, "An Awakening."
An Awakening
. . . life had the appeal of a West Texas jail
. . . 'til the siren of life dropped her ten-thousand veils
And the TRUTH that is me, no longer whimpered but WAILED!
Like a million volcanoes 'neath King Triton's mad gales!
Through the womb of a dream
. . . I redefined "me"
I, an ARMY of armies
. . . a trembling leaf on a tree.
Faith not the issue . . . belief had now become ME
Far beyond definitions of a word called "free"
Beyond nightmares of Auschwitz,
Beyond precious Christ,
Beyond a mocking constipation,
I once referred to as "life."
Through my eyes ALL could see as creation breathed ME.
I was everywhere and nowhere . . . in between matter's seams.
I was young and old,
meek yet BOLD,
Walkin' paths so far past
the tiny roads we'd been sold.
No preacher preached it . . .no president decreed it
. . . but if your soul had a hunger
. . . this is the trough where you'd feed it.
Deep inside we all see it. In simple truth we all be it. . . . So be it . . .
