Since Uranus entered Pisces in March the most symbolically appropriate events have been the outbreak of SARS, increased concern for the world's oceans, changing media ownership rules by the FCC in the U.S. and, as Time magazine calls them, the "weapons of mass disappearance." Fortunately, SARS doesn't appear to have the reach of the international influenza epidemic that killed millions the last time Uranus was in Pisces (84 years ago). The environmental fight to save the oceans is likely to stir awareness of humanity's fragile relationship with nature. Congressional members of both political parties in the U.S. are considering overturning the FCC's monopoly-friendly ruling. And, the Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz has essentially said, regarding the reason for a U.S. invasion of Iraq, "We don't need no stinking weapons of mass destruction."
Uranus is the planet of surprise or sudden turnabout. Pisces goes all the way from dreams and fantasies to compassion and faith. In its "Through the Looking Glass" (ir)reality we find hard core Ariel Sharon playing peacenik with born-again interventionist G.W. Bush and Palestinian leader Mr. Non-Arafat. These are, indeed, strange times, which again, perfectly fits the symbolism of Uranus in Pisces.
However, on the metaphysical front, there is another stream of Uranus in Pisces energy that we may be able to tap into over the coming months. This is triggered by the unusually long stay of the planet Mars in Pisces this year, brought about by its retrograde (apparent backwards motion) period in that sign from July 29 to September 27. Mars crossed Uranus on June 23rd. When the warrior planet ends its retrograde period in early fall it will be very close to Uranus again. In fact, during September and October this planetary pair will never be more than 8 degrees apart, making a two-month conjunction between them. This explosive combination has all sorts of nasty implications for real world events. Accidents and acts of sabotage are among the candidates for headline grabbing. However, beyond the consciousness of ordinary reality, another set of potentials is evident, one that can propel humanity to new images of itself and its future.
First, however, we need to come back to June 2003 when Saturn entered Cancer. The planet of form and structure in the sign of the matrix (pre-Keanu version) is about rebuilding the nest. While (as I've written before) fear can lead to retreat behind walls of nationalism and racism, new seeds can also be formed. Fundamentally, the key to Saturn in Cancer is connection with one's emotional flow. Attention to these subjective feelings reveals the patterns that inhibit growth and, thus, how to change them. Our collective foundation (Saturn) work, then, is for each of us to let go of instinctive habits that diminish the capacity to feel and grow. If we attend to this task, the real miracle of Uranus in Pisces can be ours.
Pisces is the universal sign, the waters that touch every shore. Revolutionary Uranus' presence suggests that we can each break into aspects of the collective that have been beyond our reach in the past. We each now possess a cosmic library card giving access to the whole of human experience. Any talent, gift, attitude, attribute or ability possessed by one of us can become accessible to any of us. It's like the human Internet where information flows without boundaries. The human genome is not just being decoded in the lab, but in our bodies, minds and souls, as well. All we need is the means to connect and collect what's being made available, which brings us back to Saturn in Cancer.
Saturn (integrity) in Cancer (personal history) is about being true to oneself-not the limited self of the past or the delusional one of the future, but the living, breathing person you are in this very moment. This ongoing dance with the self is the magical choreography that unlocks the key to the human genome/genius. When we are purely ourselves, unfettered with judgment, guilt, expectation and fear, we gain full access to our species and all of its gifts. It's simple, then, at least it appears to be. Every answer we need comes from this combination of self-awareness and collective consciousness. There is no external God to save us (or punish us). Humanity is free to choose its future. But this is not a democratic process in which the majority rules. The energetic/emotional truth of one person cuts through the clutter and chaos of a thousand others. Each of us is a potential Messiah who can make the difference between humanity's slow, painful degradation or an evolutionary step towards a brighter tomorrow, and all that's needed is to be ourselves.
