CHOICES: The Art of
Conscious Creation

by Teri Harris Saa
Dear Readers,

Thank you for your wonderful responses and for this first and important question:

What do I have the power to choose?
There is a very old story that goes something like this: A poor farmer and his son go out to the field to harvest their meager crop. Along the way the son falls and breaks his leg. The farmer is devastated. How will he complete the harvest on time without the help of his son? Later that day the king's soldiers come by to recruit the farmer's son. The battle they have been fighting has been bloody and they have lost most of their troops. The farmer knows that if his son were to go into battle he would probably never return, but because of his broken leg the son is allowed to stay at home.

Look at this story as a life experience full of opportunities for choice. Every moment of every experience you make a choice. You choose what to think, what to believe, how to react and how to behave. You also choose how to interpret each interaction and occurrence in your life. Just like the farmer you have the power, as well as the responsibility to choose how you will experience each moment of your life. What I would ask you to consider is, are you conscious of the choices you make or are you choosing unconsciously?

Your ability to choose is the greatest talent you have. It is the driving force behind your evolution as a Spirit and as a human. Through choice you give expression and meaning to your existence. If you are conscious of the choices you make, your life will move forward and you will eventually experience all of your greatest desires. If, however, you make your life choices unconsciously, you may find yourself a prisoner caught in a loop of repetitive experiences.

Let me give you some background on the choice making process.

Each of us is born into this physical world equipped with an ego, a mind (both conscious and subconscious), a personality and a certain level of intellect. These are not parts of our brain, but are instead components of our authentic Self (Spirit, Soul or Higher Self).

The ego is that fragment of the authentic Self (or simply "Self" from this point on) that allows the Self to identify Its place in life and define Its life experiences. Ego individualizes and personalizes the life experiences of the Self thus separating them from the Whole. Ego allows us to feel that life is happening to us and is not something happening outside of us. The ego also identifies our feelings and dictates our reactions.

The mind can be thought of as the operating system of the ego. It is through the mind that the ego and ultimately the Self interact with the physical world. Our mind is not our ego or our Self, but is used by them to process and define our human experience. The mind is home to our thoughts, emotions and sensations. The conscious portion of our mind is the programmer of the operating system and the subconscious portion is the program.

The ego and the conscious mind are intimate partners. Together they formulate our beliefs, thoughts, behaviors and reactions and then program these into the subconscious. The quality of our subconscious program is a direct reflection of the specific set of beliefs, thoughts, behaviors and reactions that we develop before the age of eight and that then become our survival mechanisms. Each of us has a different set of early experiences. Therefore we each have different survival mechanisms.

The personality is our temperament. It reflects the characteristics we use to interact in the world. Until we become conscious of our authentic Selves, we tend to identify ourselves by our ego, mind and personalities. And we tend to make choices from the perspective of our unconscious survival programming.

Our survival programming defines our core beliefs, our level of self-confidence, our reactionary behaviors and our habitual thought patterns. Until we consciously exercise our power to choose, the choices we make and the quality of our life experiences largely depends on whether our survival mechanisms are centered in fear or faith.

The following is an example of the programming process. A child is born into an abusive family. It comes to believe that it is a victim and learns to survive by playing the "victim game." The role of victim and the "game" of "victimhood" become the subconscious survival program. And as long as this program is running, the child and later the adult will make unconscious choices colored by the belief that they are a victim. These choices affect every aspect of life.

Now, back to your question, What do I have the power to choose? You have the power to choose every experience of your life. You have the power to choose not to be a victim or a prisoner of your subconscious survival programming. You have the power to choose to be a creator instead. The secret lies in becoming conscious.

As you become conscious your ego will awaken and begin to understand its function as a component of the Self. It will start to reprogram your subconscious with life affirming beliefs, thoughts, emotions and behaviors. It will begin to make choices that move you toward your highest good and ultimate desires.

Life is a lot of fun when choices are made consciously.

Next month I'll discuss the first choices we make-the pre-birth ones.

Blessings,
Teri
