Summer is here, and for those of you with children home, this can be a hard time. During the long summer break, unless you have prepared for entertainment for your kids you will hear phases like "I am bored," "there is nothing on TV," " it's too hot to go outside."
I have three girls myself who have short attention spans (grin) so I know what I speak of. Raising my children in the goddess tradition allows me some creative energy that some parents wouldn't consider as craft projects for summer entertainment. The children view this as very magical and spooky, so naturally they are drawn to it.
In this month's article I will list a few of my personal favorites to enlighten and entertain your little ones on those extremely long days when on 500 channels there is still NOTHING on. (smile)
Being girls, we like pretty things. So making flower Crowns is perfect to bring out the girlie girl in all of us, and show our feminine side.
You will need 50-200 flowers with stems. (the amount you need will depend on the size of the blossom)
You will need thin strong wire. Cut a piece big enough to fit the child's head, with a little extra since it will be smaller once you add the flowers and florist tape and ribbons.
You begin with cutting the stems to about an inch to inch under the blossom.
Shape the wire to your head, leaving that extra inch or two.
Fold and twist the ends of the wire to secure them. Add green florist tape to secure ends. Wrap the green tape around the entire circle you have just made, covering it completely.
Place a blossom on the wire on top of the secured tape. Adding new tape to secure each blossom, wrap the stems, and let the blossom hang freely. Be sure when adding the next flower you place it over the first one so there are no gaps, overlapping if necessary. Continue until you've gone around the wreath, being generous with the flowers so that it looks full and no gaps are showing. You can leave about to inch space to attach ribbons. Take the ribbon and cut several thirty-inch lengths. Fold them in half, holding the fold with your fingers. Place them on the space you left, pull ribbon ends around the wreath and through holes. Tighten.
When you are finished your lovely Flower Crown will be complete. A maiden is born.
Silk flowers can be used instead of fresh if you want to be able to preserve this lovely project for future use. This is a great idea for a flower girl or bridesmaids in weddings as well.
A little witch learning her craft must also learn the importance of making her own ritual tools as the power comes from within. Our next project is the preparation and making of our own "wand"
The best wands I've found are natural. A limb or stick found in the forest. If you want to make it more personal, you can always carve your personal symbol or decorate in a manner that appeals to you. Children tend to think of Harry Potter when designing their wands. You can carve out some dot holes and place crystals in them with glue. To add a crystal to the top, use a wire wrap to hold the crystal in place. ( brass wire is good but it will tarnish over time) Take a long piece of wire, wrap it several times around the end of the wand, until it is secure. Place the crystal in the position you want. Then wrap the wire several times around it to be secure. To secure the end of the wire, simply loop it under and around itself. You can add ribbons to add more of a dramatic look. Be creative.
Kids love to cook and using their hands, and making a huge mess is always a plus with any child.
This recipes is quite fun as it requires a bit of each of those things.
Cream Cheese Mints:
Though these aren't traditionally pagan, we make them pagan by pressing them with our pentacle necklaces or a charm press. Wax seals work well too.
1 pkg. (8 oz) of cream cheese
cup soft butter or margarine
2 lbs. Powered sugar
tsp. Peppermint or wintergreen extract (use the real stuff, not imitation)
Few drops of food coloring
Combine cream cheese and butter in heavy bottomed saucepan. Stir over low heat until cream cheese is soft, butter is melted and the mixture is thoroughly blended. Add the powered sugar and the extract. Now with different kids personalities at work, you might want different colors, so before adding your food color, separate into equal portions, then add the color of choice to each portion. Roll into 1-inch balls. Place on waxed paper. Press with stamp to form design on top. Let stand, uncovered, about 4 hours or overnight until mints are firm and outside is dry, but inside is still moist and creamy (taste to check. This recipe should make about 8 dozen. Enjoy
Enjoy your summer and your kids, Soon enough they will not want to do projects with you. Somewhere along the way we stop being cool, so milk it as long as you can (grin)
Blessed be
