Healing & Alternative Health: Aryuveda
Baby Massage
by Venkat and Christine Machiraju
From the moment of conception until entry into the outside world children are held closely and caressed by their mother's womb. It is natural therefore, that they enjoy and in fact require a lot of physical contact in the moments after they are born until they are five years old. Slowly, as they grow and become comfortable with their own identity they need for physical contact wanes and they start to seek gratification through emotional and mental stimuli. Physical contact remains important throughout our lives but is not needed as frequently as it is when we are babies.

Massage is an excellent way to provide physical contact along with gentle exercise and toning for baby's organs, skin and muscles. It also helps to encourage growth and development of nervous system.

Studies have shown that premature babies who are given massage grow faster and are more alert and active then those who do not. Touch and tenderness are food for a baby's mind and self- image.

Massage during the growing years may reduce problems such as scoliosis, arthritis and other problems related to bone and muscle.

In India, infants are massaged everyday until they are at least one year of age.

Using oil helps to provide necessary protein and enhances the skins health and beauty. Heat rash and cradle cap are treated nicely with massage.

Sesame and olive oil are some of the best oils to be used on babies as the skin easily absorbs them. The anterior fontanela should be massaged with castor oil as this provides nourishment directly to the brain and aids in the closing of the soft spot.

Slow gentle stokes should be used when massaging babies and the massage should only last as long as the baby is comfortable. Fifteen minutes is usually the amount of time a baby will allow you to massage him/her.

Once the baby starts to crawl it is very difficult to make them sit still long enough for a massage so it may be a good idea to do it after a warm bath when the baby is more relaxed. Just before bed would be a great time to massage a baby who is walking or crawling-it would also create a nice bedtime bonding ritual!

Once the baby has been massaged with oil chickpea flower paste can be rubbed on the baby. This helps in removing excess oil and also makes for beautiful, healthy skin that lasts a lifetime!

The baby should then be bathed and wrapped in a warm blanket. A good feed of milk and the child will sleep soundly for at least three to four hours.
