Tarot is many things to many people - an oracle of divination, a focus for meditation, a tool for personal growth, a tool for counseling others - the uses are limited only by one's own perceptions. The one thing that remains constant in all of it's many facets is that the Tarot, with its archetypal energies, acts as a gateway to higher understanding, an access portal to the voices of the ancient ones.
These are the things that we will be talking about in this column - the things that Tarot can be, and how we can apply them to our own lives. As Tarot readers, we see many different sides of life. The aim of all readings, however, is the same - to empower our clients to make the best choices available to them, and to gift them with the tools to manifest those choices. Many of us since the 9/11 travesty have been dealing with career issues amongst our clients - much more so than normal, if my clientele is any sort of barometer. This month I thought that we might take a look at this area of Tarot - see where our clients concerns are really coming from, and how we can help them address their issues.
Tarot is notorious for answering the question that needs to be addressed - which is not always the question that was asked! One of the first things that we do as Tarot readers is to help the Seeker form their question. I have found that, especially when working with career related issues, the Seeker can be uncertain about where to start - about what area should be addressed first. Helping them talk it out is one things that we can do. It gives us a better idea of what is important to them, and what is not, and what the basis for their concerns really is.
There is a wonderful Tarot spread in "Tarot: Mirror Of The Soul" (by Gerd Ziegler) that addresses this very issue. It can be used with ease to help determine where the starting point in a career based reading should be (actually - it is an excellent starting point for any reading). It is a four card spread titled "Clarification of a question or emotional condition." 1 It is in the shape of a diamond, with card number one on top, card number 2 on the left, card number three on the right and card number four on the bottom.
You begin by having the Seeker thoroughly shuffle the cards, and then divide them into two piles. The pile on the left represents the passive, receptive aspects of the Seeker, the pile on the right represents the active, outgoing aspects of the Seeker. The top card from the left hand pile goes in position number 2, the bottom card goes in position number 3. The top card from the right hand pile goes into position number 1, the bottom card goes into position number 4. The positions are defined as follows:
1. What is the basic question? What is the theme of what is going on right now?
2. What energies the Seeker is receptive and open to. What people and events are they attracting to them?
3. What the Seeker is outwardly expressing. How are they influencing their own environment?
4. This card is the key to the answer. This is the "way" the Seeker can best overcome their problem, or work their way around it. Ziegler notes that negative cards in this position indicate the possible end of a negative condition or attitude.
Once we have the theme of what is going on, we can better assist the Seeker to form a specific question that will allow them to see their situation in a new light. Possible areas of interest for questioning might include:
Changing Jobs:
1. What in the current job environment indicates a need for change?
2. Are the issues involved with the field in general, with the company they work for or with their co-workers?
3. Are they considering changing career fields? If so - why?
4. Are they looking outside of their present company for work, or do they want to apply internally for another position?
Career related relationship problems:
1. Is the problem largely focused on co-workers?
2. Is the problem largely focused on their immediate supervisor (or management in general)?
3. Is the problem related to a lack of self confidence?
Choosing between more than one job offer:
1. What are the pros and cons for each job offer they are considering?
2. What do they expect to "get" from each job offer?
3. What are they bringing to each job offer?
Once we have the area for questioning in focus, we can do one or more spreads that address the individual concerns. (Note: I often do smaller spreads that address each of my client's concerns separately. At the end of the reading, we go over what we have discussed and tie it all together.) Here are some of the spreads that I use. They are my personal spreads - you are welcome to use them as is, or use them as springboards for coming up with spreads that work for you and your clients.
Career choices:
1. What drew me to the career I am in.
2. Is this the best career for me at this time?
3. What are my current obstacles?
4. What brings me joy in this career path?
5. What steps can I take to advance my career? (Note: As many cards as thereader feels should be drawn here can be drawn. I find that one or two steps clarified for a client gives them a start int he right direction.)
I lay this spread in a linear fashion, from left to right.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
~~~~~
1. Is the career I am currently in the right one for me?
2. Will I find security (financial and personal) within this career?
3. What steps can I take to better align myself with my career in order to (1) progress, and (2) find joy in my work again?
I lay this spread out in a linear fashion, from left to right. Position number three can have as many cards laid on it as seems necessary.
1, 2, 3
~~~~~
1. Is my career bringing me joy?
2. Am I putting my best effort into my career?
3. What do I have to accept about my career - what can I "not" change?
4. What issues from my past are acting as ghosts and holding me back?
5. What steps can I take to resolve/release past issues?
6. What personal changes can I make that will help move my career forward?
7. Final outcome.
Cards 1-3 are laid out in a linear fashion, left to right. Cards 4-6 are laid out in a linear fashion, left to right, under the first line. Card 7 is placed on the third line,
under card number 5.

Changing jobs:
1. What energies represent the current job environment?
2. What is the motivation for the Seeker to change jobs?
3. What are the Seeker's long term career goals?
4. What strengths within the Seeker are available to help them achieve their goals?
5. What career challenges currently face the Seeker?
6. What does the Seeker expect to receive by changing jobs?
7. What hidden influences are surrounding the Seeker?
8. What energies are in the near future for the Seeker?
9. What is the final outcome?
The cards are laid out in three lines: line number one is cards 1-3, laid from left to right. Line number wo is cards 4-6, laid from left to right. Line number three is cards 7-9, laid from left to right.
1, 2, 3

Choosing from more than one job offer:
1. What attracts the Seeker to this job?
2. What does the Seeker bring to this job?
3. What hidden factors might be present with this job?
4. Would the Seeker find success with this job?
5. Final outcome if the Seeker accepts this job?
The cards are placed in a linear fashion, from left to right. Draw the same cards for each job prospect, lining them up under each other. By looking at hidden factors, the probability of success and the final outcomes, the
job offers will begin to take on individual personalities that will make it easier for the Seeker to decide between them.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5

Career related (business) relationship issues:
1. How the Seeker is being affected physically by their work/career issues.
2. How the Seeker feels emotionally about their work environment.
3. How others at work (or the other person in the issue) perceive the Seeker.
4. What is the key to improving this relationship?
5. What actions can the Seeker take to improve the relationship?
The cards are laid in a linear fashion, from left to right.
1, 2, 3, 4, 5
~~~~~
1. What is the theme of the issues between the Seeker and the other party?
2. How the Seeker consciously perceives the other party.
3. How the other party consciously perceives the Seeker.
4. The Seekers subconscious fears about this relationship.
5. The other parties subconscious fears about the Seeker.
6. What the Seeker wants as an outcome/resolution.
7. What the other party wants as an outcome/resolution.
8. Hidden factors.
9. What action can the Seeker take to bring about resolution?
10. What will the final outcome be?
Card number one is placed on line one. Cards 2, 4 and six are placed to the left and under card number 1. Cards 3, 5, and 7 are placed to the right and under card number 1. Card number 8 is placed on the next line, to the left. Card number nine is placed on the same line as card number eight, and to its right, Card number 10 is centered on the next line.
The goal of a reader is to empower their clients - to gift them with tools that will enable them to focus on their goals with greater clarity, to make better decisions and to take actions that allow them to live in accord with their own inner principles. The closer we can come to walking the middle path - to bringing resolution between our inner world and our physical world - the closer we are to living a life of peace, harmony and dignity.
Next month we will be changing gears - focusing on the role of Tarot in decision making. I hope that you will join me as we look at how we can work with the Tarot in our own lives, as well as helping to empower our clients.
Please feel free to contact me about any topics that you would like to see discussed in this column, or any Tarot related questions that you may have.
May August find each of you taking the time to enjoy all that summer has to offer. May you reconnect with parts of your soul that you thought were lost - may you continue your journey into wholeness.
Blessed Be,
Bonnie
