Synastry and the
Sexual Profile
Part 1
|

My last few essays have been centered upon different aspects of synastry. This essay continues that same theme from the vantage point of sexuality, a most important dimension of life and relationships, especially when it is not fulfilling. Within the synastric context, whether the astrologer is a hobbyist or a professional, compatibility concerns are always important and sexuality is a big part of that picture.
In the beginning stages of analysis of the sexual profile in a horoscope, it is important to understand that the analysis must work within and through the total expression of identity as is suggested by the entire horoscope. This necessarily takes into consideration the person's parental and environmental conditioning, especially during those important formative years of development when identity and esteem are developed productively or dysfunctionally. A full analysis gives a perspective that allows a better frame of reference for understanding of the sexual profile. If you are a hobbyist in astrology and are reading this essay to get a "quick-fix" on sexual compatibility, please let me caution you that you cannot analyze a horoscope for sexual purposes unless you can analyze a horoscope. It is a much deeper consideration than the party discussions of Taurus and Leo being incompatible. Sexuality must be examined within the context of one's identity and that is only possible with a substantive analysis of the horoscope.
This essay is not meant to be a thorough, comprehensive coverage of sexual analysis in the horoscope. That would require an entire text. However, you will find reliable guidelines for analysis in the paragraphs to come.
The first step in gauging sexual compatibility between two people is to analyze their horoscopes individually first, THEN bring both profiles together. Let's take a look at the analysis of sexuality in the individual horoscope.
Gauging Sexuality
In modern times, there has been much debate between astrologers as to whether the 8th House is the House of sexuality or the 5th House.
The sexual identity is found first and foremost through analysis of the 5th House of the horoscope; that is, the ruler of or a planet in the House (which ever is the most dominant).
The fact of the matter is that sexuality was always linked to the 5th House until around the 1950's or 1960's with the onset of psychological astrology. That is when sexuality became associated with the 8th House. You will be hard pressed to find many references to sex as an 8th House matter prior to 1950 in any astrological text unless the text was written within the context of psychology.
There are two basic reasons why sex became linked to the 8th House. One very obvious reason is that Scorpio is the 8th Sign and is the archetype connected with sexuality. Since Scorpio falls on the 8th House in the natural distribution of the Houses, the 8th House also became associated with sex.
Secondly, sex was always seen in recreational terms throughout history, thus a 5th House concern. But with the development of psychology in modern times, discussions of sexuality took on a complexity, an almost mysterious, taboo-like orientation in the world, more so in the United States than in other parts of the world. This perspective made it very easy to associate sexuality with the 8th House, especially since it could be associated with the Sign Scorpio. It was simply a shift in attitude about sexuality from older times to modern times that brought the 8th House into discussions of sexuality in astrology.
A person's sexual identity is found in the 5th House. That is, the attitude about sex, the sexual orientation, the comfort level, proclivities, etc., are all found in the 5th House. The 8th House becomes important in sexuality as a symbolism of a person's comfort level when engaged in the sexual act with another. The relationship between the 5th and 8th House in sexuality is pretty similar to the 1st House - 7th House relationship. The 1st House symbolizes one's identity. The 7th House tells us about the relationship capacity of that identity as it merges with others within relationships. Using another example, the 10th House symbolizes the professional profile but the 2nd House, on an outer level, gives insight into one's earning capacity. The 5th House symbolizes the sexual identity; the 8th House symbolizes the capacity that the sexual identity has to fulfill itself when sex is shared with another.
As a very general rule of thumb, when either significator (the planet ruling it or a planet placed in the House) of the 5th House is involved in tension aspects with outer planets, there are suggestions of challenges and concerns within the sexual profile that are of importance. If Saturn is making hard aspect contact to a 5th House significator, there is a suggestion of an important control factor (fear, inhibition, which, when flipped around, can become the use of sex as a strategic weapon in order to be controlling) or difficulty in expression somehow. If Uranus is making hard aspect contact to a 5th House significator there is a suggestion of intensity, innovation, and an urgency for release that is directly related to the nervous system. If Neptune is making hard aspect contact to a 5th House significator, there is a suggestion of weakness (cannot say no; suppression of the urge, etc.) and quite often a fascination with erotica. The contacts with Pluto will magnify the profile to some level of extremism, either in a fulfilling manner or in a dysfunctional manner - the whore or Nun syndrome. Contacts involving Mars will energize and heat up the sexual profile and Jupiter brings in a dimension of easy fulfillment or an expansion of sexuality into wasteful dimensions. A strong Mercurial connection, particularly when Gemini and Virgo are on the cusps of V and VIII, heightens the importance of the mind and communication within the sexual profile.
When hard aspect contacts involve an 8th House significator, the suggestions are the same as with the 5th House except that the focus is on the fulfillment or lack of it when engaging in sexual relations with another.
To complete analysis of the sexual profile, analyze the natal disposition of Venus. By Sign, Venus suggests a characteristic need to relate to others romantically, relationally, and socially in a certain way. When outer planets make hard aspect contacts to natal Venus, relational and romantic concerns are emphasized in ways that contribute to the sexual profile, especially during the younger, prime years of life.
When Venus is found retrograde in a horoscope, it is a very important consideration for the sexual profile. It suggests a difficulty in gaining romantic or sexual fulfillment. There is a second agenda usually tied into the need to relate romantically or sexually in a certain way. It may manifest as over-doing things (Warren Beatty, Magic Johnson) or it may manifest in the setting up of complex defenses that protect against aloneness when the challenges of intimacies become too strong.
Marilyn Monroe
Marilyn Monroe's story is well known. I have used her horoscope many times in my essays on this site because her life was a stunning reflection of her horoscope. Born as a result of an affair that her mother had, she never received acknowledgement of her existence from her father. Her maternal parents were incapable of taking care of her so her primary years were dominated by stays in foster homes, etc. The young Marilyn was raped and abused in different ways that affected her entire being. Her life had an extremely difficult beginning.

We can see these tough beginnings quite easily in her horoscope. The southern hemisphere emphasis always suggests the sense of a person's necessity to seek an identity or an anchor in the outside world, usually because the anchor was not there in the formative years of development. This orientation is necessarily accompanied by a lot of bumps and bruises as the identity gets pushed around, controlled, and even victimized in its interactions with the outside world.
Saturn is retrograde in the 4th House, a powerful bucket handle planet here that is the key symbolism of the difficult early beginnings and it shows us just how important the non-existent father relationship was to her. It dominated her psyche.
Although Marilyn was a beautiful, much-desired woman, the psychological toll that her early beginnings took on her were never resolved. One of the ways that it manifested was in acute sexual dysfunction. Marilyn never experienced orgasm! How can we see this reality reflected in her horoscope? It's really very simple: Neptune opposes the Jupiter-Moon conjunction, suggesting idealism, fantasy, identity confusion, etc. Saturn squares the opposition, creating a T-square. Imagine the opposition part of this picture as a horizontal line with Marilyn's sexual identity on one end and her sexual fulfillment sharing potential on the other end. The line is trying to ascend to a level of fulfillment but it cannot ascend because the Saturn function is holding it down. And see that Jupiter rules the 5th House and Neptune rules the 8th. The father/early home dynamics have complete psychological control over the sexual dynamics of Marilyn's psyche. It is really just that simple. And the unaspected, relationship-ruling Uranus within the 8th House (at the Aries Point) heightens all of this. For Marilyn, sexuality was a tool for ego endorsement. It did not provide physical or emotional fulfillment as is the norm.
Warren Beatty
Warren Beatty, in younger years, was the king and champion of sexual affairs in Hollywood. From Lois Rodden's Astrodatabank bio on Beatty: "A notorious womanizer, his affections are righteously claimed by every female in Hollywood and beyond, singly and in pairs. Various tallies include Madonna, Diane Keaton, Liv Ullmann, Julie Christie, Michelle Phillips, Joan Collins, Vanessa Redgrave, Leslie Caron, and on-and-on, certainly the co-star of the moment. Another list adds Carly Simon, Elle MacPherson, Goldie Hawn, Isabelle Adjani, Brigitte Bardot, Candice Bergen, Cher, Kate Jackson, Vivien Leigh, Diana Ross, Susan Strasberg, Barbra Streisand, Britt Ekland, Connie Chung, Jessica, Savitch and Diane Sawyer. The most appropriate list seems to be the Hollywood phone book." Beatty was an extremely sexually active man!

His horoscope shows Aquarius on the cusp of V, ruled by Uranus, which is in VIII conjunct Venus, which is very strongly placed in Taurus. This conjunction is quindecile the Moon in Scorpio, a position that needs deep passion on an emotional level! This is a compulsive, tenacious orientation to sexuality, well-rooted in self-esteem concerns. Mars, ruler of VIII trines the Sun in VII, corroborating the comfortability within sexuality as well as his easy show of Self to the public. And we can stop right there.
Notice the retrogradation of Venus. Does this represent a challenge in sexual fulfillment? Sure, it does. It is one of the reasons why there have been so very many sexual affairs in his life. It is like having an 800-channel cable television system where you click the remote incessantly in search of something of interest to watch. For Beatty, there were plenty of women and an ease in establishing the relationships but it was not until he was into his fifties that fulfillment finally found him.
In Part II, we will look at some very interesting examples, including two prominent political couples, a compulsive masturbatrix, and we will see the Nodal Horoscope in action within sexual analysis.
