Astrologer's Notes:

Confessions of a
Horary Astrologer

by Diana Stone
Think of a question that you really would like answered. I don't mean anything cosmic like the meaning of life or the ultimate destiny of your soul. Think of something a little more down to earth like, "Should I really buy that house?" How about the outcome of the relationship with the new girl in your life? Should you accept that job offer? There are all sorts of health questions that might come to mind. Do you have a surgeon that is a butcher? That's nice to know BEFORE he wields the knife on your innards.

The universe is standing at the ready just waiting to whisper the answers in your ear. Well, lets make that your friendly horary astrologer. I must confess that it is a mystery to me why everyone in the world does not use horary astrology. Rather than explore the philosophical ramifications of that here, however, I'll settle for writing this month's column on this subject so dear to my heart. It is meant to encourage newcomers to this subject to explore the possibilities.

Horary astrology is a separate branch of astrological practice that is different from natal astrology that deals with the horoscopes of individuals. It is the same idea as different areas of the law. You don't want a tax attorney defending you in a criminal case. Horary astrology uses the date, time and geographical location of a question posed by a client. A horoscope is drawn for that moment, just as though a baby were born then. There is a chart but that is where the similarity ends. Horary involves a unique set of rules specific to it.

I maintain a professional practice as a horary astrologer. I have many clients who ask horary questions consistently and with discernment. Depending on astrology to answer every trivial question that pops into mind is discouraged. In fact, the horary chart itself warns the astrologer if the question is frivolous, or is simply to test the astrologer's skill or even whether there is something shady involved.

One of my clients owned a commercial building that burned to the ground. He was haggling with the insurance company. The chart showed that the building had a little help in burning down. It also indicated that it was about to become a police matter. I advised him to quietly drop the matter or he might be calling me from jail. He was furious at the answer but his wife confided that I was right and he followed my advice.

I also must confess that I use astrology to ask myself questions. My friends owned a place on the Oregon Coast where I was invited to spend occasional weekends. It offered a 260-degree view of the ocean. I loved it. My friends fell on hard times and I could have bought the property for a song. I was elated until I looked at the horary chart that went out of its way to say, "No!" I was disgruntled about it for several years. My friends were able to hang onto their property and I continued to visit. One day the house and the entire lot went sliding down the side of the mountain. Case closed.

I cast my first horary chart back in 1969. To this day I am in awe of how this system works so accurately. These charts find a way to communicate their answers no matter when a client comes to that moment in consciousness where the astrological pattern synchronizes with their concern. If you are not familiar with horary astrology, you are missing out on one of life's most helpful tools. Maybe the problem with horary astrology is that it seems to be too good to be true.

I encourage my clients to "think horary." If this is a new idea to people, it just does not occur to them to seek out a horary astrologer. There are some situations that I urge clients to ALWAYS ask the horary question. That includes buying real estate. I have saved people a lot of money and a lot of grief just on this one alone. And do people ever ignore the advice of the chart? Yes, and unfortunately it is to their despair later. One recent client bought a very expensive property despite a chart that was extremely negative. She thought she could turn it over and sell it right away. Months dragged by as the house sat on the market and she is now considering bankruptcy. I must confess that I am inwardly jubilant to be right. (I shouldn't admit that.)

It is wise to ask a horary question before accepting a new job. Employers ask about hiring an employee. It is better to find out beforehand. Affairs of the pocketbook make good questions. I offer these as guidelines. In reality, I think I have just about heard it all at this point. A man called once to ask if a horary astrologer could predict who committed a crime. Thank heavens my inner guidance systems alerted me that this was the criminal calling me. I said, "You don't really believe in that stuff, do you?" I love horary astrology, but I must confess I am not willing to sacrifice my life for it. Yes, I will deny it three times before the cock crows.

If you are interested in the technical side of horary astrology, I write an on-line column in which actual charts are shown along with an interpretation. You can access it directly from my Web site.
