Astrology Notes: Astrology, Healing and the Evolution of Consciousness

Chapter 1 ~ Meeting Chiron
(The story of my introduction to Chiron, Planet of Healing and the beginning of a decade-long journey of Healing and self-discovery and of becoming an emissary for Chiron.)

Revelations
As the next weeks and months went by, a pattern began to unfold, as did the beginning of the next stage of my own personal Healing. The discovery of Chiron was also the next key in my search for meaning in astrology. It brought astrology into the realm of experiential knowledge. No longer did astrology have to be dead information taken from dry studies of personality types or from boring treatises on the codified attributes of planetary influences. Here was the key to living astrology - the key to the receipt of knowledge and understanding directly from the horse's mouth, so to speak. The key was the direct and conscious experience of planetary energies and their effects on our lives.
Shortly after the meeting with Rickie, I went and bought the book on Chiron by Melanie Reinhart. I sifted through its reams of dissertations on the mythological and archetypal relevance of Chiron, trying to understand and connect to the living energy of Chiron. I realized, during this time, that one of the greatest values of studying other peoples' interpretations of the attributes of individual planets was to help us to 'tune in' to the specific 'frequency' of a planet - like tuning into a distant radio station. Once the frequency is recognized and imprinted sufficiently upon our consciousnesses, we can 'call up' the station anytime we wish and receive the latest direct messages from the planets.
I realized this was one of the ways ancient astrology had been practised. Ancient astrology was 'shamanic' in the sense that the Contact with the planets was a sacred, living initiation, in which the astrologer became 'one' with the particular planet, thus being able to 'speak' or 'channel' the messages of the planet. Some ancient societies had much more Contact with the livingness of the Universe around them than we do in modern times. They were not yet affected by the Age of Reason and the march of the scientific method. To this end, they developed systems of 'gods' and higher 'powers' that acted as icons and waystations for the facilitation of conscious connection to real living consciousnesses in the living Universe. The dissolution of these societies into the rigidity and dogmatism of superstition, organized religion and ritual practices - the true Mysteries becoming mythology, mythology becoming history and history becoming dogma - happened subsequent to the real experiences of conscious Contact with these higher realms. The primarily Saturnian process of dissolution of living experiences into dead forms and structures is the subject of another study, beyond the scope of this book.
Suffice to say, with the so-called Age of Enlightenment and the Age of Reason, proceeding in Western society, there came the loss of the belief in the livingness of the Universe, i.e. the loss of the animistic view. The Age of Reason brought the mechanistic view into dominance. The mechanistic view makes a clear distinction between what is obviously alive and what is ostensibly inanimate.
This was a necessary step in the evolution of our consciousness. All sides of our multifold nature - physical, emotional, intellectual and spiritual - must be developed equally and eventually synthesized into one true Being. To this end, in the last so many hundreds of years, the world and Universe increasingly were considered mechanical and inanimate structures ruled by observable laws of cause and effect. Modern Humanity's one-eyed interpretation of the Newtonian paradigm prevailed. Even our view of biological life suffered from this kind of reductionism. A gradual mistrust of our spiritual and intuitive perceptions came into being. Science became very pragmatic and suspicious. If something could not be observed and measured under controlled conditions then, for all practical purposes, it did not exist. Thousands of years of rich experience that was beyond the limitations of body and intellect - beyond the known senses - was temporarily discarded in favor of the certainty of the measurably known.
Only now, in the age of quantum physics, is the scientific world beginning to see the incompleteness of the Newtonian paradigm, i.e. that this paradigm is only part of a greater picture. With this, there has been a resurgence of the recognition, amongst 'new-age' circles, of the value and validity of ancient knowledge and understandings. Again, I believe science and spirituality will eventually meet. As Albert Einstein once said:
"Science without religion is lame,
religion without science is blind."
Science and Spirit will eventually come to the same understandings, each seeing the same picture from a different side of the coin. We need both understandings in the same way that we need two eyes to have any sense of distance or perspective.
With respect to my initial despairing call for Contact and guidance, I realized, in retrospect, that the Universe is actually waiting for us to make Contact with it. Furthermore, I realized that we are the ones who have cut ourselves off from conscious Contact with the living Universe. We have created the blockages and fragmentation, albeit not consciously. To begin to understand how this became so and how to turn the situation around, we need, initially, to reach a point where most of our normal beliefs and conditioning have failed to give us the answers we need. We almost need to be in despair, acknowledging our inability to find the answers by ourselves. In a sense, we must be brought to our knees by our need and Wish for Contact and Healing. At this point, we are able to pray. At this point, we are able to ask for help. At this point, we have sufficient humility to bare our souls to the Universe at large. At this point, we are finally ready for answers. Furthermore, it is only at this point that our prayers can be answered.
(This point of despair is most often reached during Saturn Returns and Uranus half-Returns, otherwise known as mid-life crises. During these times, all that we thought about ourselves and about our lives is put into question, our self-righteousness and illusions given a veritable beating.)
I also realized, in retrospect, that, somewhere along the track of our evolution, we 'chose' to experience the Pain of separation, cutting ourselves off from rest of the living Universe. In doing so, we cut ourselves off from our guidance. Our spiritual guidance could do nothing except take a step back for a time and wait until it was called upon again. We 'chose' to experience separateness from the Universe. We needed to experience the other side of the coin of Creation. We needed to enter the world of duality... to enter the world of reflections, so that we might ultimately awaken to our true nature.
When we finally reach a point of true humility and ask for help and Contact, it will be given. When asked, the consciousnesses of the Universe, in their multitudinous variety, will come forth and give us guidance. The ways in which this Contact will manifest are also manifold, some more obvious and straightforward than others are. For me, the initial answer came through the channel of my friend Rickie. From that point onwards, I was increasingly able to hear the messages directly.
It is perhaps important to mention here that, during this entire process, there was a part of me that did not believe what was going on. Despite the coincidences, synchronicities and confirmations that took place, there was a part of me that doubted everything. At times, I felt I was just imagining these things. I felt that I might have been making it all up in my head for, as yet, unseen psychological reasons. I felt, at times, that I might be crazy. However, as confirmation after confirmation took place, I increasingly learned to trust the guidance and experiences that I was given. The results themselves were undeniable. I felt more Healed and more Whole than I had ever felt in my life. At times, I felt reconnected to my Heart. I began to be able to find my path, my meaning and my mission in this life. The creative output from these experiences remains a testament to their power of transformation - poems, angelic/devic messages, books, articles, music, photography and art.
Perhaps the most powerful testament to the validity and veracity of this entire process was, and still is, the Healing of people around me. These were people with whom I had the privilege of interacting, of sharing, of doing astrological readings and of working with in a Healing way. Chiron's motif, "Healer, Heal Thyself" is experientially verified when one sees that one's own Healing results directly and indirectly in the Healing of others (and vice versa). Ultimately, many people all working in this way amplifies the Healing, growth and evolution of Humanity at large and promotes the Healing of Mother Earth. Let's return to the main story, though...
In retrospect, I realized that my dream of the dying woman was a Gift from Chiron. The dream was the beginning of the symbolic and actual Healing of my feminine side - my intuition, my gentleness, my creativity, my caring, nurturing and sensitive side. It was also the beginning of the Healing of my sense of living Contact with life. These parts of me had become cut off from me for reasons that became clear to me much later. More than this, though, the dream from Chiron illustrated, in a practical example, a process of Healing our Wounds. This process will be discussed in more detail in Book Two. Chiron's message is that total Healing of our Wounds and blockages is possible if we consciously undertake to do so. The path of Healing lies in integrating, embracing and Loving the Wound, not by trying to get around it, not by running away from it and not by trying to destroy it.
Concerning the meeting with Rickie, she became and remains one of my dearest soul-friends. She was an angel of mercy. Later, in my astrological studies, I discovered that Rickie has Chiron conjunct her natal Sun (both in the same place at birth) and Chiron parallel Mercury (at the same declination of longitude). Who better to initiate me into the secrets of Chiron than this? Another coincidence? I think not. Just by the way, as it turns out, another two spiritual teachers whom I met later also have Chiron-conjunct-Sun in their natal charts. This was further confirmation for me. We will explore these planetary aspects in Part Three of this first book.
