Creating Bridges: Spirituality & Philosophy:
Living With Your Intuitive Child:
The Routine is in For a Change-Like it or Not
by Sherry Healy |

Intuitive children always change the life style of those who care for them. And because of this fact, parents of intuitive children, learn to live in the moment and experience the lively energy of the day. As the intuitive child grows from toddler to child, to adolescent, his lively energy and impulsive nature leads parents to rework schedules and rethink their ability to act upon unexpected events; all the while leading the parents toward an enhanced way of life.
For a parent or educator to appreciate the intuitive child "seize-the-day" phenomenon he must first learn to enjoy that which is in front of him. For adults, this is not always an easy task. Our lives are busy. We have work to do, bills to pay, television, cars, money, food, work, bills, television, cars, money, food
.
And, with all the clutter that contemporary life throws our way, who has time to stop and appreciate anything at all? And who has time to halt and deal with an intuitive child? Face it, an intuitive child is a challenge. He can not be wedged in front of a television set. Nor can he easily be persuaded to go away and play. He makes noise; lots and lots of noise. And, yes, intuitives force the average parent to STOP the mental chatter of bills, television, cars, money, food and work. As frustrating as it may seem, intuitives force parents to notice them. And eventually, intuitive children force parents to glimpse their own lives, as they truly exist. Yes, these intuitive little tantrum throwing--question asking--thrill seeking geniuses force parents to STOP and see the muck, mud and light and joy of real life. And then, the real lessons begin.
First, the intuitive child will teach his parent that life is too complicated, regulated, regimented, organized, mundane, restricted, dreary, weary, stressed and unchallenged. And only after the parent has gotten this message, loud and clear, will this child show his parent that there is another way to live. There has to be another way of life, because the intuitive child is not about to do things the traditional way. So, with a squirming intuitive child in hands, the parent begins to find another way of experiencing the daily routine. He begins to clear away the clutter because he must or his intuitive will probably chew it up and swallow it. Leave a book out on the dinning room table? No way. The intuitive child will pick it up and use it as part of an experiment. The wet pages will be found floating in a puddle under the kitchen sink. Plant flowers in the front garden? Sure, but don't expect to see all of them bloom. The intuitive will pull them out of the soil and bring them to his parent in awe of the beautiful roots that he has found just under the earth. Face it parent, you can't keep anything where it once was; nor can you maintain the schedule and daily pace you once knew.
Regardless of the exact circumstances of the intuitive child's powerful influences, as a parent of an intuitive child, you finally realize that when you are with your child, you better be present, in the moment, with him and doing something wonderful at all times. Your child wants you to enjoy being alive and present with him while participating in projects or feeling and touching life's little wonders. And, your child takes great offence when you don't seem to understand the joy and logic in these simple daily antics of pouring the gold fish down the drain or melting the plastic spoon from the heat of the oven.
The intuitive child thinks his parent should take time to investigate the excitement of all things, as he does. So, he won't easily settle for a day in front of the television set and only half of our awareness. No, he wants all of our attention. He wants to explore the beauty of nature, mud, worms, rain or any other natural happening. And, he wants his parent to enjoy these things right along with him.
So, eventually the parent of an intuitive child gets the message that he actually must place his thoughts and actions into that which is in front of him. The parent can't keep half his mind in the clutter of work or any other responsibility. The intuitive child just won't stand for it. He wants to lead his parent to the very core of any task; the very delights of life. So, the parent learns to clear away that which distracts his attention from the substance and core activities of his day. He, the parent, puts on his hiking boots and gets ready to climb the highest mountain he can find. He becomes ready to love the fun and gusto of life. But then---- just as he is knee deep in the action of the activity, his intuitive child begins lesson number two; looking up and deciding that it is time to change directions. And he, the child, changes the original plan. And again, the intuitive child won't take no for an answer. He decides that he has leaned enough about the present subject and that his quick and clear mind wants to soak up information from another source. And in spite of typical parental attempts at slowing down this process and pace, the intuitive child does whatever it takes to put an end to the previous activity. He just wants to stop and move onward. And, the parent learns lesson number two; the intuitive child's willpower far outweighs the attempts of any normal human parent.
Parenting a child with such enormous strength of will is tiring and can be overwhelming. Yet there are delicious experiences to be lived. While parenting a child of this nature, one makes parenting his first priority. Raising or just living with an intuitive child is not a half-way situation. It is a fulltime commitment and responsibility. And while taking all of our energy and all of our attention to do this job well, along the way, we learn that it is possible to change our lives from the mundane chores that our daily routines demands. We learn that while we are living and growing, there is a world of unexpected pleasures to be enjoyed. And, we learn to enjoy these things.
My experiences of raising an intuitive child, while at times felt difficult, have left me with a wisdom that is priceless. Faced with the realization that flexibility makes for a happy life, I have learned that my daily schedule did not, at one time, offer the quality of life that I deserve. I have learned to accept the daily responsibilities that life grants me while having fun and enjoying the present moments and all life has to offer. And while it is true that my intuitive child often still drags me through mud covered mountains to see what is happening on the other side, from these moments I have grown and seen things that I would have missed if not for his curiosity. Together, as my intuitive toddler grew into an intuitive little boy and eventually into an intuitive middle school aged young man, we learned that life can be wonderfully filled with unexpected events and adventures. But, best of all, I learned that I can and should take the time to enjoy these moments.
You can make your daily routine easier for you and your intuitive child by following a few simple steps.
1. Plan doctor's appointments at the beginning of the day when you don't have to keep your intuitive child waiting. Be the first on the doctor's list.
2. Make marketing and household chores fun. An intuitive child will endure trips to the grocery store, bank or pharmacy when he sees the chore as an adventure.
3. Expect to change plans. Live in the moment. Allow the day to unfold naturally.
4. Plan physical activities. An intuitive child is a child with lots of energy. And, learn to enjoy outdoor activities.
5. Create a safe yet busy indoor environment for your child. Have many hands-on activities available.
6. Plan time away from your intuitive child. You need to have quality quiet time to keep your mental and spiritual health at its best. Find a safe and friendly individual to supervise your intuitive child for these special times.
7. Find other parents of intuitive children. A friend who understands your special circumstances can be a friend for life.
