Astrologer's Notes:
Synastry and the
Sexual Profile
Part 2
by Basil Fearrington
In last month's essay, I began a discussion on the sexual profile in the horoscope because it is such an important consideration in synastry. In order to justice to sexual synastry, you must be able to fully analyze each individual's horoscope. We will continue now by looking at the horoscope of a few couples.

A Private Case

Whenever you are analyzing a horoscope and see aspect contact between planets in all of the Succedent Grand Cross of Houses (II-V-VIII-XI), love issues are brought to the foreground via self-worth, giving love, the reaction to others' values, our expectations of love, how we want others to react to us - all of these are emphasized.

The horoscope shown here, "JM," is a private case with a powerful emphasis in the Succedent Grand Cross of Houses. At the first glance, in seconds, you know that the suggestion of worth and love concerns are emphatic. You do not have to be any more specific than that to gain great insight into this (or any other horoscope like it) horoscope.

The first impression of the horoscope suggests unresolved tensions from the formative years of development (lower hemisphere emphasis), which forms the foundation of this woman's development in life. She was raped at an early age (13-14). Instead of being supportive, her father blamed the rape on her. She reacted poorly, suffered a severe loss of personal worth and started on a downward path of wild, carefree sex, drugs, and even crime, including a stint as a nude dancer. Though her life reads like one of those dramas that you find on the LIFETIME cable station about the hardships of women, she is an extremely successful owner of her own business today with three children (from three different men), making a healthy five-figure income per month (notice Uranus=Jupiter/Pluto…check the archives for my essay on the signatures of success in a horoscope)!

However, on a sexual level of things, this is a most intense woman. She has bedded, in her estimation, more than 400 men in her lifetime. She has even had therapy for compulsive sexual disorders (masturbating 5-10 times a day, despite the very active sexual life). How is all of this reflected in her horoscope?

Uranus in XI opposes the idealistic Venus-Mercury-Sun conjunction in V, a very intense symbolism and it doesn't get more stimulating than that. The need to give love is well intensified here. There is a sexual idealism at work. This is compounded by the fact that Saturn and the Moon, rulers of the V-XI axis, are in a quindecile relationship, which adds tenacity and compulsion to the sexual profile in a controlling (Saturn) way! Neptune in II is opposed by the Moon, suggesting an uncertainty of worth regarding relationships and lovability (Neptune rules Pisces on VII; the Moon rules XI). It is easy to creatively deduce that sex is being used, at least partially, as a way to bolster esteem but is, at the same time, a true outgrowth of an active nervous system, all of which began just after her rape. There is certainly much more to this involved horoscope but this overview is sufficient for our learning purposes here.

The purpose of my client's consultation was for purposes of synastry. She had become involved an a complex relationship with a man that she loved very much. The relationship was struggling and she wanted my objectivity.

The first impression of "T's" horoscope shows a dramatic lower hemisphere emphasis, corroborated by the wide opposition of Neptune to the Moon (idealism) within the parental axis. A very characteristic manifestation of Neptune in the 4th House is that there is something missing or not given from a parent or from the early home life in-general. Neptune squares the Ascendant, suggesting identity confusion relating to a parent or to the formative years of development. This opposition is squared by Uranus, intensifying it. Uranus rules VIII, which brings all of this into the man's sexual life and anxiety regarding how he feels in with the esteem constructs of others. Most important here is the fact that the Moon is the only planet above the horizon that is direct (of course). Since the Moon is a maternal figure and the parental axis is so heightened, we begin to get a feeling that there is a maternal concern at work. Since the Moon rules the Ascendant and is involved in so much tension, especially the opposition of Neptune, the suggestion is that"T" has no clear frame of reference for who he is.

"T's" mother gave birth to him when she was 14 years old. Hers was a life of the streets, living by her wits. Her world view was much colored by her environmental circumstances, all of which were passed on to "T," especially regarding relationships. This is a man who brings a lot of psychological baggage with him in any relationship because he was taught to not trust women, taught to be suspicious, and also taught that a real woman would never be interested in him!

The interplay between the sense of esteem, sexuality, and relationships is as open as a book! Saturn, ruler of VII, is in V and is squared by Pluto, ruler of V. This is a difficult, difficult situation that manifests in sexual dysfunction and concerns of worth and relationships. What's more, Venus is unaspected, which means that its relational, romantic symbolism has a tough time tying into the rest of his identity and, therefore, runs away with everything trying to make it work. OR…..concerns of worth and finance take the place of relating (the latter is how it manifests, as would be expected with the important Moon in X).

What can happen when two people come together, both of whom have heavy psychological baggage that have manifested in disparate approaches to relationships and sexuality? Since her sexual needs are so strong, and she carries herself in a provocative way (the Moon in Aries needs to be seen, heard, anything but ignored), and he has problems believing in himself, especially sexually (also has a hard time trusting because of the sexual doubts), doesn't it make sense that his insecurities couple with her pounding libido to create a challenging situation? No matter how you look at it, these two people are extremely incompatible sexually. He has little capacity for intense sex while she is capable of sustaining passion for entire nights, days at a time! This is exactly what the problem has been. My client did everything she could do to prevent an affair but the need for fulfillment was too strong to be held back. She went on a sexual tear. The relationship could not stand up to it.

Bill and Hillary Clinton

Bill Clinton's horoscope has Aquarius on the cusp of the 5th House, ruled by Uranus. This immediately suggests intensity and innovation as being key to his sexual identity. Uranus trines Jupiter and sextiles the Sun. Venus is the ruler of Clinton's 8th House. It cannot be any stronger, placed in the Ascendant in Libra. The Moon in the 8th House is without major aspect tension (despite the square involving the Sun, which is weak for our purposes here). All-in-all, this is a sexual profile that is very comfortable! He is quite comfortable with every aspect of sexuality.

Hillary has Aries on the cusp of the 5th House, ruled by Mars. Pluto conjoins Mars and they both square Venus, which is uncomfortably placed in the 12th House in Scorpio. Mercury, ruler of the 8th House is retrograde, which suggests that there are two things on her mind regarding sexuality when she is engaged in sharing with another, a second agenda of some kind. This retrograde Mercury is squared by Saturn!!! This suggests a control factor of some kind, something within the thought processes that prevents enjoyment when engaged in the act with another. It surely manifests as coldness and a lack of warmth. Everything about Hillary Clinton's sexual profile is tense. Everything about Bill Clinton's sexual profile is unchallenged. The Clinton's are sexual opposites!

John and Jacqueline Kennedy

Jacqueline Kennedy-Onassis horoscope, another much-used favorite of mine, shows a "bucket-handle" Saturn retrograde. It suggests a dominating self-worth factor related to her father and it was so. Everyone knows that her father was a spinster, a slick, ladies man. The young Jackie was devastated when her parents separated. Her father's way of showing love to Jackie was through gifts and materialism, which she came to associate with love.

The above is important because Saturn is one corner of a "weak" Grand Trine with the Moon and Midheaven. Any planet that squares or opposes (quindecile, as well) a point in the Grand Trine assumes enormous importance as a way out of defensive posture. Here, Saturn opposes Venus in VIII. This suggests that Jackie's need to relate romantically and sexually, tied keenly to cerebration, was fully aware of (the opposition) a control factor having to do with her father. Her need to relate was well tied into the father tensions and concerns of worth as a result of that relationship. And please notice that Venus rules the 7th House, bringing it all into the relationship sector (for those of you who know and use the quindecile, Saturn is quindecile to that 7th House Jupiter, ruler of II, tying in relationships and worth in a tenacious way). There is no question that this Venus in VIII is troubled. This suggests dysfunction within the sexual profile, a sexual discomfort because of the cerebral factors that always have her father's love on her mind.

The 5th House is ruled by Mars in Virgo, which suggests sexual energy applied in ways that have more to do with technique and that which is proper over passion. And Mars is squared by Jupiter, ruler of II, tying in, again, self-worth concerns with relating, with sexuality. This factor couples with the Saturn-Venus factor to suggest that Jacqueline was not comfortable with her sexuality.

On the other hand, John Kennedy had Aquarius on the cusp of V with Uranus in V squaring Jupiter, Mars, and Mercury in VIII. What's more, Venus is unaspected and so it runs away with this dimension of his life. This is a very intense sexual profile.

As is the case with Bill and Hillary Clinton, John and Jacqueline Kennedy were very mismatched regarding their sexual profiles.

Dorothy Dandrige

Dorothy Dandridge was the first prominent Black actress of in Hollywood. She was a beautiful woman who sang, danced, and acted her way to prominence. However, her personal life was troubled, deeply reflected within the intimacies of her relationships.

Dandridge's horoscope shows us a lower hemisphere emphasis, which always suggests concerns in the formative years of development that when left unresolved, are brought forward into adulthood, especially in relationships. This initial impression is corroborated by Neptune's square to the Sun in IV (identity and self-worth confusion with the Sun's rulership of I and II), and Mars' square to the Jupiter-Mercury conjunction in IV (a tense relationship orientation because of a parent). Pluto's conjunction to the Moon suggests an intrusional mother. So, within seconds, we expect early home tension centering upon a maternal figure. It manifests in identity uncertainty, self-worth insecurity, and relationship concerns. Saturn's square to the Moon shows a heavy press upon the need for emotional and domestic security.

There is a Grand Trine in Water, suggesting emotional defensiveness against the fear of being hurt. But the GT has plenty of release points for this emotional defensiveness: Saturn in III (sibling concerns, depressive mindset), Mars in VII (relationship challenges), and Venus in VIII all form outlets for this sense of self-sufficiency. For our purposes here, Uranus' square to the retrograde Venus from the 8th House to the 5th House is all-important. The suggested difficulty in fulfilling romance and sex that is symbolized by the retrogradation of Venus is intensified by the square from Uranus. The capper is Pluto's square to Saturn, arguably the most difficult aspect in the entire lexicon of aspects because Saturn's sense of controls (fear, inhibition, etc.) becomes magnified and empowered by Pluto Here, Pluto rules the 5th House and lends its difficulties to the sexual profile. There is a deep anxiety at work here regarding sexuality.

Dorothy Dandridge's father was never there. Her mother paraded a lesbian relationship in front of Dorothy and her sisters. The mother's "friend" was brutally over-protective and judgmental, sometimes to the point of checking the private parts of Dorothy and her sisters when sexual activity was suspected. Dorothy was made to feel that sex was dirty. It was pounded into her. There was guilt surrounding her involvement with sex and that was the second agenda that prevented sexual fulfillment for her; it was the echo of her mother and her lesbian lover saying that sex is dirty. Dorothy could never get past this. Every relationship failed. She could never perform comfortably within sexual intercourse.

Sexual Synastry and the Nodal Horoscope

When astrologers compare horoscopes in order to gauge compatibility potential, we tend to look for close aspect contacts from one horoscope to the other. This kind of comparison helps to determine how the energy fields of two people may interact. For example, if my Jupiter is in a close conjunction with your Venus, the suggestion is that your need to relate romantically is expanded by me. Contrarily, if my Saturn is in close conjunction with your Venus, you might feel constrained or limited by me regarding romantic or sexual factors. The delineations [in synastry] are the same as they are natally except that you are relating a particular aspect to two people. This is the characteristic nature of the way analysis takes place in synastry.

There are frequent instances where two people have what is apparently a fantastic relationship - sexually or romantically - that is not reflected in a synastric comparison of their horoscopes. In last month's column, I talked about the Nodal horoscope and we learned that it offers another option for analysis within the synastric context. Here is an example of how the use of the Nodal horoscope in synastry was able to reflect what was not shown in the traditional method of comparison.

I can account for the level of sexual compatibility and passion in this example because I experienced it! But first, let's look at the general orientation of "her" horoscope: The first impression shows a decided lower hemisphere emphasis that is instantly corroborated by the exact Neptune-Mercury conjunction in IV co-ruling the parental axis. This suggests a focus of idealism from within the home or a manifestation of idealism because of conditions in the formative years of development. Mars is in IV squaring the Ascendant, suggesting assertiveness or anger expressed in the identity as a result of the early home situation. Parental tension is further corroborated by the square between the Sun and Moon. Her parents were physically abusive to each other. The home environment was characterized by constant fighting and aggressiveness.

The Sun in Scorpio links the life's core energy with a need for control. This need is expressed dramatically in a personality that needs recognition ( a queen complex) and all of this is presented to others emotionally with an emphasis on domestic and/or emotional security that is apparent in the image presentation.

The 5th House is quite active. Looking at the broad picture, the Sun squares the Moon in II; Venus and Saturn are both squared by the Pluto-Jupiter conjunction. There are mixed messages here but, by and large, the tension between the 2nd and 5th Houses links self-worth concerns to the sexual profile in a challenging manner. The Pluto-Jupiter square to Venus is a clear suggestion of sexual excess. In particular, Pluto's square to Venus suggests a relationship perspective that is in great tension with what is possible. The Saturn portion of the equation adds a control factor. Remember, Saturn always represents either of two factors - being controlled through inhibition or needing to exert control over someone else. Since we have already determined that there is an excess, we creatively deduce that the Saturn function here is controlling (as opposed to being restricted by internal fears). But what's more important here is that Saturn is the ruler of VII. The square from Pluto is a very difficult symbolism regarding relationships and, again, ties relationship difficulties to sexuality and self-worth matters. By and large, we are seeing a profile of a woman who loves sex but who uses it in a controlling way to bolster her sense of self-esteem. Her partners eventually tire of the constant clamoring for sexual attention because there is little emotion attached to it. She was married three times between the ages of 18 and 21!

Uranus (here we go again) is ruler of the 8th House and smoothly trines Venus (the square from Neptune adds the lure of erotica and suggests a certain sense of weakness under stimulation). When she brings her sexual identity forward deeply with another, she is easily fulfilled and is extremely orgasmic even with the slightest hint of stimulation.

This woman is someone whom I spent a lot of time with. We were extremely compatible on a sexual basis but I knew within minutes of getting her birth data that the unfinished business from her early home life would manifest in esteem concerns that would probably make the relationship difficult unless she had managed the tension. The early concerns had not been managed at all. She had a history of troubled relationships but always separated relationships and sexuality. She was completely comfortable sexually but very insecure within relationship concerns. The sexual relationship between us was blissful. But the general content of the relationship was difficult because she was very hard to get along with.

My horoscope is shown on the inner wheel. "Her" horoscope is on the outer wheel. In comparing horoscopes, aspects-wise, astrologers pay close attention to the interaction that one person's planets make to the other person's Venus, in particular. This is especially so when the aspecting planet is Mars, Jupiter, Uranus, or Pluto, none of which occur in this synastry! Where is the symbolism of the extreme sexual compatibility and tenacious passion that existed between us? It isn't there, that is, until you convert both horoscopes to the Nodal system.

Just marvel at what happens! My Mars is in exact conjunction to her Venus!!!! Her Jupiter and Pluto are in a near exact conjunction to my Venus and square my Venus!!!! And please notice her Saturn squaring my Moon, suggesting my feelings of emotional depression at the hands of her need to control things. But regarding sexual passion alone, I can tell you that these symbols are EXACTLY descriptive of the sexual reality that existed between us.

Summing It Up - General Guidelines for Analysis

1. Sexual analysis must begin with an analysis of the entire horoscope.

2. The sexual identity is shown in the 5th House.

3. The 8th House represents the sexual identity in action with another.

4. Hard aspect contacts to the ruler of or a planet within the 5th or 8th Houses emphasizes potential pressures upon a person's sexual nature that may be problematic.

5. When significators involving either the 5th or 8th House are retrograde, look for an important second agenda within sexual fulfillment or a difficulty in fulfillment of one's needs.

6. The Sign position of Venus suggests what the relational needs are, romantically and sexually. Hard aspects to Venus by the outer planets tend to adjust the need fulfillment according to the aspecting planet.

7. Soft aspect contacts within the 5th House, 8th House, or Venus suggests an ease of fulfillment.

8. An unaspected planet in or ruling the 5th or 8th Houses suggests that sexuality can run away with the person, assume enormous importance.

9. Always analyze both horoscopes in the Nodal system, just to see if there are inter-horoscope aspect contacts (conjunction and opposition focus) that do not appear in the traditional synastry. You may also compare person A's Tropical to person B's Nodal and vice-versa.
