Tarot

Gateway To Tarot

by Bonnie Cehovet
Tarot Master
Numerology and Tarot are separate disciplines that, when used together, bring the best out in each other - IMHO, of course! When we think of how numerology is used in conjunction with Tarot, one of our first thoughts is the pips themselves - the Aces through Tens of each suite. Then we think about the numbering for the Major Arcana (I stay with the Fool = Zero school of thought), and the numbering system, if there is one, for the Court Cards. The system that I use for the court cards is: Page = 11, Knight = 12, Queen = 13 and King = 14. However you choose to number the Court Cards, the key is consistency - treat them the same each time you do a reading.

So, now we have the numbers to look at. How are we going to interpret them? There are several ways that we can do this, and they can be used at the same time. The first thing that we are going to look at is the basic numerological meanings. Then we will move on to the metaphysical meanings, numerological dignities, and finally we will take a look at the treatment of numbers on the Tree Of Life.

Some of the basic meanings for the numbers 0-10 are:

* 0 Pure Potential
* 1 Beginnings
* 2 Duality - The joining of opposites, balance
* 3 Triad - That unit formed by Duality (2) and its offspring (1),
expansion/growth
* 4 Manifestation - The four elements, the four directions, four seasons
etc.
* 5 The mid-point of the 0-10 cycle, representing the five human senses
- also indicates change and the need for co-operation with others
* 6 The harmony that we see when we we resolve the issues of the
number five, a very introspective and creative card
* 7 An active number, one of introspection and spirituality and dealing
with challenge
* 8 Power and Manifestation, Maturity, Movement
* 9 Ending/Completion of a cycle
* 10 Endings and new beginnings, transition

Some of the metaphysical meanings for the numbers 0-10 are:

* 0 Nothingness, Pure Potentiality, the Cosmic Egg
* 1 Totality, Wholeness
* 2 Polarity
* 3 Completion, Fertility
* 4 Law, Reliability, Solidity
* 5 Justice, Intellect, Five Senses
* 6 Harmony, Fruitfulness
* 7 Magick, Mysticism, Psychic Realm
* 8 Ambition, Leadership, Materialism
* 9 Humanitarian Concerns

Numerological Dignity refers to how the numbers impact each other - whether they are well dignified (support each other) or ill dignified (detract from each other). In general, like supports like: i.e. even numbers support even numbers and odd numbers support odd numbers. Placed together, even and odd numbers are considered ill dignified, which indicates that the nature of the card will (a) not be at its fullest potential and/or (b) may be skewed to a greater or lesser extent to its negative side. When a card is well dignified on one side, and ill dignified on the other, it is considered to be neutral. The energy is there, but more than likely will not be used.

The world of Tarot is a world that is filled with layer upon layer of knowledge. When we look at numerology as applied to Tarot, we find many more layers. One of those layers would be the ten Sephiroth of the Tree Of Life - each Sephiroth represents one of the numbered pips of the minor arcana, in each of the four elements (Fire, Water, Air and Earth). At the end of this section there is an absolutely amazing exercise to do with the Tree of Life - one that I get no credit for, but that I am more than happy to share! 1

A little background on the Sephiroth. Loosely translated, Sephiroth means numbers. In a very simplistic way of speaking - they are. They came to be from nothing - from a vast expanse of universal nothingness - no form, nothing. Through the Sephiroth universal energy flows from the Spiritual to the Physical world, and from the Physical world to the Spiritual world.

The first Sephiroth is named Kether - it constitutes the world of the four Aces. It is the sphere of hidden intelligence. The virtue associated with Kether is attainment. The associations for the four Aces are:

Ace of Wands: Root of the powers of Fire.
Ace of Cups: Root of the powers of Water.
Ace of Swords: Root of the powers of Air.
Ace of Pentacles: Root of the powers of Earth.

The second Sephiroth is named Chokmah -
it constitutes the world of the four Twos. It is the sphere of Wisdom. The virtue associated with Chokmah is devotion. The associations for the four Twos are:

Two of Wands: Dominion.
Two of Cups: Love.
Two of Swords: Peace restored.
Two of Pentacles: Harmonious change.

The third Sephiroth is named Binah - it constitutes the world of the Threes. It is the sphere of Understanding. The virtue associated with Binah is Silence. The associations for the four Threes are:

Three of Wands: Established strength.
Three of Cups: Abundance.
Three of Swords: Sorrow.
Three of Pentacles: Material works.

The fourth Sephiroth is named Chesed - it constitutes the world of the Fours. It is the sphere of Mercy. The virtue associated with Chesed is obedience. The associations for the four Fours are:

Four of Wands: Perfected work.
Four of Cups: Pleasure.
Four of Swords: Rest from strife.
Four of Pentacles: Earthly power.

The fifth Sephiroth is named Geburah
- it constitutes the world of the Five's. It is the sphere of Strength (Severity). The virtue associated with Geburah is energy (courage). The associations for the Five's are:

Five of Wands: Strife.
Five of Cups: Loss in pleasure.
Five of Swords: Defeat.
Five of Pentacles: Earthly trouble.

The sixth Sephiroth is named Tipareth -
it constitutes the world of the Six's.
It is the sphere of Mediating Intelligence. The virtue associated with Tipareth is devotion to the Great Work. The associations for the Six's are:

Six of Wands: Victory
Six of Cups: Joy
Six of Swords: Earned success.
Six of Pentacles: Material Success.

The seventh Sephiroth is named Netzach - it constitutes the world of the seven's. It is the sphere of Occult Intelligence. The virtue associated with Netzach is unselfishness. The associations for the seven's are:

Seven of Wands: Valor.
Seven of Cups: Ilusory success.
Seven of Swords: Unstable effort.
Seven of Pentacles: Success unfulfilled.

The eighth Sephiroth is named Hod - it constitutes the world of the eight's. It is the sphere of Perfect Intelligence. The virtue associated with Hod is Truthfulness. The associations for the eight's are:

Eight of Wands: Swiftness.
Eight of Cups: Abandoned success.
Eight of Swords: Shortened force.
Eight of Pentacles: Prudence.

The ninth Sephiroth is named Yesod -
it constitutes the world of the nine's. It is the sphere of Pure Intelligence. The virtue associated with Yesod is Independence. The associations for the nine's are:

Nine of Wands: Great strength.
Nine of Cups: Material happiness.
Nine of Swords: Despair and cruelty.
Nine of Pentacles: Material gain.

The tenth Sephiroth is named Malkuth - it constitutes the world of the ten's. It is the sphere of Resplendent Intelligence. The virtue associated with Malkuth is Discrimination. The association's for the ten's are:

Ten of Wands: Oppression.
Ten of Cups: Perfected success.
Ten of Swords: Ruin.
Ten of Pentacles: Wealth.

Looking at the numbers in this manner gives us a new perspective on the connection between numbers and the Tarot. Following is the exercise that I promised you.1 It is part of a class intensive on the Qabalah given by Wald Amberstone of The Tarot School (www.tarotschool.com).

Take the ones through five's from all of the suites out of the deck. Place the ones in one pile, the twos in another on through the five's. Place them in this order: Wands, Cups, Swords, Pentacles.Place the piles on a flat surface in the configuration of the Tree of Life (see above). See how they relate to each other.

Take each pile, place the Wands on the bottom of the pile, and replace the cards on the diagram with the Cups on top. Note how the energy has changed. Do this for the Swords, and then for the Pentacles. It is amazing to see the interaction of the cards, and how the elements affect the numbers.

Next month I will be presenting a Tarot spread that we can use to analyze the part that numbers can play in interpreting a reading. Stay tuned!

Tarot As A Business:

One of the first things to do when deciding to work with Tarot as a business is to define where your place in that world is going to be. Is your sole focus on being a reader? Are your readings going to be specialized? Do you see yourself as a counselor, or a healer, or a guide ... or as something else entirely? Are you going to become a teacher? Are you going to write books?

It is very important to understand from the beginning exactly where you want the focus of your business to be. You can expand your business once it is started - but you need a strong foundation and identity to begin with, something that the public can identify with.

Once you have your identity down, you want to think about how you are going to promote yourself and your services. One of the most cost effective ways to do this is through your business cards. Here you want to include some basic information: your name, your business name, the services offered, an Internet address, if you have one, and contact information (either an address or a phone number).

Taking this one step farther, and still staying cost effective, look for a graphic that will represent the "tone" or "image" that you want to present to the public. I use a very simply one - a rose. Whatever graphic you decide to use - it should allow the public to connect you with it whenever they see it.

Think about the color that you want to use for your cards - both the color of the card itself, and the color of the text. You can stay within a decent budget and still present business cards that are unique to you.

The final step - hand your cards out! Make sure that you always carry them with you, and don't wait to be asked before you hand them over. No place is immune to networking. One day at the bank the teller noticed that the check I was depositing was for Tarot services. She expressed an interest, so I handed her a card. This is the way we build our business's - one client at a time!

For those readers in the United States, I would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving. A perfect time to give thanks for all of the abundance that we have in our lives - the bounty of the land, the abundance of friendships and shared joys - all of the things that make up our lives. What a wonderful thing it would be if each of us found a way to share with others how we attracted this bounty to us, so that they can do the same. Make this Thanksgiving one to remember.

Please feel free to contact me with thoughts about what you would like to see discussed in this column, and any Tarot related questions that you may have. I would like to see this column as being a mirror for the interests of my readers, and am open to feedback of all types.
