Water in the Winter
|
|
|
by Venkat and Christine Machiraju |

|
According to the Indian science of Ayurveda, the winter season is dominated by the air element and thus makes us feel dry.
We all know that we need to drink a lot of water in the summer because we feel hot and thirsty. Many of us overlook drinking enough water in the winter though because the cold climate doe not stimulate thirst in the same way.
Drinking water in the winter will however, ward off many illnesses that are related to dryness.
Arthritis
Skin disorders
Headaches
Tiredness
are just a few of the problems we face due to dryness?
It is a good idea to drink a litre of water a day and drinking some of this water warm will help to promote digestion and prevent many of the problems relating to dryness in the body. Warm water also helps reduce the stagnation of kapha or the water element in the body. Stagnation of kapha results in congestion throughout the body and during the spring when this stagnant matter begins to thaw we see all types of colds, excess mucus, bronchitis, feeling sluggish. Drinking warm water during the winter helps to prevent the stagnation so that we feel healthy and light in the spring.
