Astrologer's Notes:
Putting Astrology
in its Place:
A Live Consultation

by Basil Fearrington
I sometimes sit and try to imagine how life was when I did not know astrology and I simply cannot. Having been introduced to it at such an early age (thirteen), astrology has been with me almost as long as I have been alive and I cannot imagine life without the guidance and illumination of life's processes that a substantive knowledge of astrology provides. I speak for most astrologers in this sentiment.

When one's being becomes so absorbed in something like astrology, there can be a tendency to lose objectivity in relationship to the mainstream public. I am not one who goes about announcing that I am an astrologer at the drop of a hat in casual social situations. I tend to maintain a sense of reserve about the title because, for the most part, people in the mainstream still have no clue what astrology really is and I would rather not be associated with what they think of as being astrology. Their frame of reference for astrology is that it is something that is in the entertainment section of the newspaper or in the back of magazines geared to a female audience. It is "something that you use to tell what your future is."

I had a blind date some years ago. The process of getting to know each other was pleasant and things worked out well initially. My way of announcing my involvement with astrology was to take her to Barnes & Noble and show her my book. I will never forget her comment. She said, "Wow, this is impressive that you wrote a book. I had no idea that astrology was something that could be studied. What is there to study? What is there to teach? What is there to learn?" These are common thoughts that go through the minds of those who simply do not know of the depth and substance of astrology.

For all of those people who have no idea of what astrology is, and even for students who relate to astrology in a fatalistic way, seeing or hearing a consultation can be most revealing and educational. To that end, I am presenting a portion of a transcript of one of my consultations as an example of astrology-in-action. Although I have permission to do so, I am not using the client's name as her identity is unimportant.

Preparatory Notes

The first thing to hit my eyes in this horoscope is that all of the planets below the horizon are retrograde, which emphasizes the southern hemisphere. In such an emphasis, there is typically a necessity to search for one's identity in the outer world of events because something in the home environment, in the formative years of development does not provide the necessary anchoring for the development of identity. As a result, what happens is that such a person looks for things out in the world where there is a great potential to be pushed around and even victimized by life experience. If you think of one of those "B" movies where a young girl in a small, quiet town gets tired of the anguish at home and runs away to Los Angeles or New York, attracting trouble and difficulty, you will have the flavor of the southern hemisphere emphasis. My client obviously opens herself up to victimization. Any opportunity to find, that which was missing in the home, is one that will be taken. My mind is immediately led to find the answer to the question, "why?" What is it that is pushing her out into the world?

Saturn is retrograde and is the ruler of the 4th House, a dramatic symbolism of difficulties in the formative years of difficulty that are centered upon the father. Saturn's placement in the 3rd House suggests that this father syndrome has a keen manifestation in the mindset and that there may be sibling considerations within all of this. Saturn's opposition to the Sun reinforces the father concerns, introduces a probable interruption in education, and, as well, tells me that there is a severity in how she feels about herself in terms of being lovable (Leo on the cusp of XI).

While the father tension is emphatic, the situation with the mother is equally as tense. Pluto squares the Moon, ruler of X (the other end of the parental axis), which is always an eye-opener regarding the mother relationship. This is important within the scheme of my client's sense of self-worth because of Pluto's rulership of the 2nd House. There is just no question that there is a severe parental factor at work.

When you see so many horoscopes and you also study a lot of books about life's processes, it doesn't take but so much of an analysis of a horoscope before you begin to see a typical life pattern emerging. This awareness is what teaches you, as an analyst to know what's important and what is not important in analysis.

The next thing that I do is look for a point of development within the first 12-14 years of life that is key. In this case, I notice that the Midheaven will arc to conjoin Mars at the approximate age of seven. The computer shows me the additional transiting measurements of Saturn squaring the Moon and transiting Uranus square the Sun, both of which occurred under the umbrella of the arcing Midheaven to Mars. There would be a period between December 1963 and April 1964 that would be key in my client's development. At this point, I really don't need to go any further but I continue on with the preparation anyway.

The Sun in Gemini shows a clever, witty, diverse core that is expressed in a personality (Moon in Taurus) that prioritizes structure, organization, keeping things the same or perhaps making them as they should be. And all of this would be expressed through an image that is probably charming, easy to look at, affable, etc. One of the things that I have carried over from my early days of studying astrology is the frequent sense of beauty that is frequently found when Libra is on the Ascendant or even when there is a preponderance of Libra in the horoscope. Here, with Jupiter squaring Venus, I assumed that the Venus factor was working in an overly expansive way so I begin to think about the sexual profile. Uranus in V or in rulership of V suggests great sexual intensity in the sexual expression and Venus rules the 8th House, the other House of sexuality where the Moon is. What's more, Uranus aspects the Venus/Jupiter midpoint, intensifying the square between them. Neptune's square to Uranus (ruler of V) introduces an, "I can't say no" factor to the sexual identity.

There is a mutual reception between Mercury and Venus, suggesting idealism that, in lieu of everything, is surely going to manifest defensively. And quite importantly, Neptune is quindecile to Mercury. This is a tenacious obsession/compulsion with idealism, fantasy, the unreal, other worlds, etc. While I can go on to over-analyze this horoscope and give meaning to everything, I sensed that I had enough to feel confident. The only thing left to do would be to look at the important periods past and future so that, together, she and I could be the architects of a solid game plan for the future in order to maximize her potentials. As usual, I made health-related notes to myself that I would ask her about near the end of the consultation.

The appointment was made to get a handle on a career direction. From the vocational perspective, I see Cancer on X with the Moon in Taurus in VIII….nice, comfy, cozy stuff that makes me think of home security. The Moon in VIII covers many paths. It is most comfortable editing or changing what someone else brings to the table. I quickly begin to think in terms of "home," "consultant." Jupiter is quintile the Midheaven. Quintiles to the Midheaven are very important indications of the need for creativity within the vocational profile. The Libra Ascendant, the Neptune-Mercury quindecile, and much more (Mercury/Venus=Sun/Moon=Venus/Node) led me in an instant to intuitively feel that the direction for this woman to go in would be to somehow combine her creativity in a way that could be used with the building or maintenance of homes. It hit me in an instant that a career as an interior design consultant could be fulfilling. She would work independently as a consultant to help people or companies to design homes. And with Saturn=Jup/Plu, I felt that she could be very successful, especially working with something structured as a home is. Lastly, with the ruler of the horoscope and the Sun in the 9th House, there is the strong suggestion of an international outreach, publishing, a religious or metaphysical dimension.

The Consultation

The person who stood before me when I answered the door was absolutely breathtaking!!!! She was dressed extremely stylishly and she dressed to attract attention. After some small talk, we settled into the consultation:

Basil: I want to assure you that what I am about to say is completely objective. You are not going to hear a word from me that you cannot understand. I will not use astrological jargon even if you ask me to because it has nothing to do with our business at hand today. Now, let me summarize this: your horoscope suggests an orientation to life in which you have felt a need to place yourself out into the world in order to find and express your identity. And when……

Client: (interrupting me) oh, you just don't know! You have said a mouthful already but I'm sorry, please continue.

Basil: And when I see this kind of an orientation, I ask myself the question, "why?" The answer to that question, in your case, points to tension in your formative years of development. In my first look, the emphasis pointed towards your father but then, upon further examination, I could see the suggestion of a maternal consideration, as well. The father concern is most emphatic and it suggests, for lack of a better term, a bit of an inferiority feeling within you, which is normal when the relationship with the male authority figure in the home is absent, tyrannical, weak, or any number of other considerations. Defenses are adopted and over/under-compensatory experiences are adopted. Now, for starters, please give me some feedback on these first observations and tell me what, if anything, took place in your life between November 1963 - April 1964 because that period in time likes like it was key to your development. (The last statement made her change body language. I had struck a chord and it was obvious. She asked me if I had juice or water).

Client: No matter how many times I talk about this, it doesn't get any easier. (Long breath)……it was March of 1964. My mother, farther, brother and I were asleep upstairs. There was a noise downstairs. All of us heard it. Dad came to our room and told us to keep quiet and stay upstairs. Mom came in the room with us. Dad had his gun. He started to make his way downstairs. Mom decided that she was going to go to the back stairway and, being little kids who never listen to parents, we decided to ease towards the steps that Dad went down. We heard a crash and heard the door open. Dad ran outside. My brother and I eased down the stairs a little more. He was in front of me by perhaps 6-7 steps when Dad came running back in. The burglar was still in the house. Dad took a shot and in an instant, there was a ricochet and (the tears start)…..my mother, who had come all the way down the back stairs, had been shot in the chest. The burglar ran out the house. We called the emergency services. Mom died on the way to the hospital.

Basil: Are you okay? Do you want to stop for a second and continue in ten minutes or so?

Client:……yea…no, I mean, I'm okay. Dad was never the same after that. He became such an alcoholic that he was just useless. For all intents and purposes, I raised my brother from the point of our mother's death.

Basil: And so with this early trauma, there was an immediate impact on your world in every way, obviously. The security of the home was disturbed forever. And without this anchor, you were forced out into the world to seek that which was no longer available at home.

Client: Yea, in a big way.

Basil: Tell me about it, please.

Client: Well, I developed quickly in a physical way, you know? I was basically like this (motions to her body) when I was thirteen years old. I always had guys, grown men even….hitting on me. It made me feel loved, needed, wanted. The more it happened, the more I wanted it. Before you knew it, I had become a prostitute. Then came the drugs and it was just a mess, Basil. I have really been around the world, not literally, of course, but, well, you know what I mean. This whole thing with my father, who died a few years ago from cancer of the liver…..he could never get past feeling like a murderer and I could never get past having lost my father and mother so early in life. Things got to a point where I just didn't care about myself. I was worthless and I conducted my life as though I just didn't care.

Basil: (keying on Pluto's transit conjunction/opposition to the Saturn-Sun opposition) There are indications here that your outlook has undergone a change recently. Have you gone back to school? We have not talked about it but your education was obviously interrupted. Have you gone back to school recently or has there been a change within your higher mind?

Client: I'm studying theology and I have accepted Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. I attend church fairly regularly and I guess I have had a change of overall outlook through it.

Basil: Fantastic. Good for you. And this is and has been a good time to do that kind of inner work.

Client:
But you know, Basil, it's kind of a placebo at this point. I am really quite addicted to sex. The prostitution stopped but I have a strong sexual drive. It so helps me to feel loved and more than anything, I need that reinforcement.

Basil: The relationship index of your horoscope is unchallenged. You clearly have no problem in this area of your life. Is there a committed relationship in your life?

Client:
Well, there are two people! I seem to need both of them.

Basil: (laughing) It's easy to see the symbolism of that need in your horoscope. But you know, you have a weakness in the sexual area. This is a factor that you are going to have to get a handle on at some point. You have to learn how to say "no" and you do that by coming to the realization that sex and the attention of others cannot substitute for your parents! You need to find that love within yourself so that a man is adding to the great feelings that you already have as opposed to a dependence on another for those feelings. This will lead to being pushed around and you've had enough of that, right?

Client: Well, it isn't completely that. I mean, there IS the pleasure principle but yes, I know what you are saying. There are times when I have imagined…..Freud would love me……that I am being caressed by my father when a man is hugging me. And he still occupies a lot of my mind so yes, I know what you mean and I think I will get there with God's help.

Basil:
I know you will. As I sit here watching you, I have to say that you have a definite flair about you. Your styling is impeccable and I'll bet that you are driving one of those cars that attracts the attention of everyone who sees you in it.

Client:
(she stands, takes my hand and we walk to the window to see her car) That's mine there.

Basil:
Uh-huh. Just as I thought.

Client:
(laughing) Okay, so what about this flair?

Basil:
You have come to me to try and get a handle on a career direction. In my preparation for this consultation, a direction for you came to me pretty quickly (her cell phone rings).

Client
: I'm sorry. This will be just a sec. (she gets off the phone)….I am so sorry. I am working for this real estate guy. He was having a problem selling this property until I went in there and started talking up some ideas with the clients about how to make it look sharp.

Basil:
Unbelievable. I want to show you something here in my notes. Read here….see what I wrote?

Client:
"Vocation - interior design consultant." Oh, my God. This is spooky, Basil. I have always had a knack for interior design. Always! But I never thought of it as a career.

Basil: You need to be in a situation that is dependent upon the resources of others; you need to have creativity expressed within your work and that work should somehow be related to the home or a home. On a metaphysical level, this probably helps to resolve and work out those feelings that you have had about your own early home situation. You create that joy for others in creating a beautiful home for them. And you know, this could develop into an international focus for you. Isn't that exciting? Now, let's talk about how we can make that happen.

That consultation was early in 1998. My client lives in the south of France today. Not only is she an interior decorator but she self-publishes a magazine for designers and what's more, she is married! In my last communication with her, she wrote, "Our meeting together in 1998 was the beginning of important change in my life. I will always have you in my thoughts. Thank you!"

The total consultation (including what was not included here) lasted 57 minutes and was very rewarding for client and astrologer. We developed an understanding of the processes of my client's life. She walked away with a new objectivity about herself that placed her in a position to maximize her potentials instead of continuing on with patterns of self-defeating behaviors. And this is the modern day astrology that is unknown in the mainstream of society, a far cry from, "A tall dark stranger will cross your path and change your life."

Astrology is a gift to us from the universe and I sure am happy that I know about it!
