In Practice: The Business of Tarot!
The Business of Tarot

It can very difficult, confusing and frustrating to try to bring up and maintain a business relating to Tarot (and this applies to many of the other metaphysical/healing arts also). There is little information out there telling us what we need to do, or how we need to do it. Unlike other more mainstream professions, those of us in the Tarot world are also having to deal with the public perception of our craft, which is at times shot in the foot by some of our own practitioners (thank you Miss Cleo!).
I am very excited about being offered the chance to write a column about this subject. There is a whole world of ideas out there, and if we make best use of our own craft, we have the opportunity to create a very professional image for ourselves. It will take all of us working together, being supportive of each other, sharing ideas and being willing to put our best foot forward, ala the Fool. We are, indeed, each on our very own Fool's Journey!
I remember several years ago when an on-line site was created by several 900 line readers. It was created to fill a void - to present information where there was a wealth of mis-information. It was set up along the lines of a FAQ, with the mission of answering questions that the public might have concerning 900 line reading and the readers themselves. It was set up to act as an information center not only for those seeking readings, but for those giving readings. (As a 900 line reader, you often feel very alone, and very cut off from any line of support with other readers.) This was one small step, taken by a small group of people who cared about themselves and their profession. It served as a beginning, and I am grateful to have had the opportunity to be part of it.
In this column we will be looking at a wide variety of issues including:
Setting up a Tarot business:
* Checking local, county and state laws prior to licensing.
* Identifying your business image.
* Identifying your prospective clientele.
* Creating a marketing plan.
* Using added value venues to attract clientele and encourage repeat business.
* Networking with other Tarot professionals.
Interacting within the Tarot community:
* Joining Tarot oriented organizations.
* Forming local Tarot business groups.
* Attending Tarot symposiums/conventions.
Promoting a professional image for Tarot :
* Lecturing locally/nationally on what Tarot reading is and what Tarot readers do.
* Speaking to local groups, or perhaps on TV or radio about what a Tarot reading is -
a tool of empowerment, not a tool of quackery.
* Speaking to local businesses about how they can use the tool of Tarot to enhance
their business (ala James Wanless and the wonderful work that he has done).
There is so much more - but this is a start. To set the tone for the New Year, I would ask each of you to do the following:
* Develop a personal Code of Ethics that can be placed prominently where your readings
are done, so that you clients can see it. If you already have one - review it and see if it
still fits your needs, or if it needs to be revised.
* Develop an image that you wish to project to your clients - healer, counselor, coach ... or
whatever you wish to be a guiding force for your business.
* Develop a set of business goals for the next three, six, nine and twelve months, along
with the actions that you will take to implement them.
Please contact me at Crystalgate@aol.com with any subjects that you would like to see discussed in this column. I want this to be reflective of the needs and concerns of the Tarot community at large.
Until next month - may we all walk with the Fool and the Magician at our sides!
