Questions, Answers and Opinions: Crystals
by Mirabai
I am often asked what crystal books are the "best" to utilize as a beginner. I have a rather extensive library of crystal and crystal healing books from geological Field Guides to books dealing with very specific healing methodology. As I grow and expand, I am finding that I go quite regularly to a chosen few. These books have been true guides to me and resonate strongly with my thoughts and ideas of how crystals assist us. Here are my top five picks.
I, of course, started out with "THE" book. It was highly recommended and being a novice, I immediately purchased it and dove right in. I still use Melody's Love Is In The Earth * A Kaleidoscope Of Crystals as a reference and cross reference. The book includes the largest array of crystals, rocks and minerals that I have seen in one place and being laid out in alphabetical order, it is easy to find what you are looking for. It also includes some general information on topics such as elixirs, numerological and astrological aspects of the crystals and so forth which makes it an awesome resource.
There are a few downsides in my opinion. Man assisted crystals, like Goldstone are not included, which can make it a bit more difficult if you are a fan of Goldstones, like I am.
However, there are several other books which do reference such items, so it is just a matter of researching a bit.
The second issue I run into most frequently, is that some tend to read this book from cover to cover and using the metaphysical properties, write a list, which usually includes some of the most unusual, never heard of, extremely rare or outrageously priced pieces, not realizing the rarity of these pieces. For a beginner, this is a daunting task! This is why I always suggest picking out stones first, then going to read the metaphysical properties.
My last issue for not using this book as often as I used to, is quite funny in a way. I hope the intent of including "Leaverite" into this otherwise useful resource was meant as good fun. Unfortunately, many people have asked me to locate Leaverite for them, because they read it in this book. If it is listed, it must be real, right? Well, yes
and no.
Just for the record-Leaverite is not a specific mineral/crystal type. It is a joke amongst rock hounds (those who go into the mines to dig for crystals) that if you find a piece of rock which has no intrinsic value, or is "just a rock", then you LEAVE ER RIGHT where you found it.
These issues however, are minor, in comparison to the wonderfully rich information you can glean from this book. I highly recommend it.
My favorite books for beginners to get an overall idea of what crystals can be used for and how they are used are by Judy Hall. The Illustrated Guide to Crystals and The Crystal Bible are wonderful and colorful references which are easy to use and learn from.
The Illustrated Guide to Crystals includes chapters on such topics as What Crystals Do, Choosing Crystals, Cleansing and Programming Crystals and are full of colorful illustrations and crystal photographs. There is also a crystal directory by color which can greatly assist when trying to identify that unknown piece in your collection. Other topics, such as Divination with Crystals, Healing with Crystals, Crystals and Astrology are also covered.
The Crystal Bible is a compact, easy to carry guide which includes a very informative section beginning at how crystals are formed and concluding with such topics as Crystal Selection and Crystal Meditation. The rest of the book is devoted to a specific crystal (she lists them from A-Z and has a vast database), a colorful photograph of the crystal along with information on color, appearance, rarity and source, as well as attributes, healing with, and placement of the crystal for optimum utilization.
For those who are most interested in the healing aspects of crystals, my recommendation, above all others would be Katrina Raphaell. Her knowledge on the utilization of crystals for healing is vast. Her first book, Crystal Enlightenment was written in 1985, contains information she shares about her own personal journey into crystals through her personal study and research. Her work with crystal healing was some of the first and most profound of that time.
Crystal Healing is chock full of information including Advanced Crystal Healing Practices and a wonderful section devoted to the Master Crystals, such as Laser Wands, Earthkeepers, Elestials, Transmitters and Channeling Crystals.
Choosing books on Crystals can be a daunting task. There are so many out there!! I have many, many more in my collection which offer wonderful advice and information on how to utilize crystals. I use each at one time or another, but always find myself going back to one of these five.
So there you have it. My top five recommendations for those who have chosen this wonderful journey. From novice to expert, these books will provide huge amounts of useful information and instruction.
