A Silent Epidemic

Dateline November 2003. In the early '80's I was increasingly alarmed at some symptoms that I had been trying to ignore. My diagnosis and consequent therapy unexpectedly led to an astrological research project. I wrote about it in a book How to Manage the Astrology of Crisis published by Llewellyn Worldwide. I have lectured about the subject in many different cities. I have received more response to this particular subject than from anything else I have ever done. I would like to share it in the hopes that it will help people who are suffering from certain problems that are too often never diagnosed or effectively treated. Traditional medicine has done a poor job in this field. It is for the astrologers and alternative practitioners to spot this and recommend treatment.
Neurological Problems in the Birth Chart
Your sister-in-law used to be such a sweet girl, now she is a screeching shrew. Your honor student son is failing and hanging out with a bad crowd. Your laid back friend is throwing rage fits. And yourself? Where is all that energy others used to envy? Your neighbor, the lawyer, has lost his confidence and cannot appear in court anymore. What is going on?
Each year uncounted numbers of people suffer non-fatal head injuries. Many of them do not even lose consciousness. Those who do receive medical attention walk out of the hospital given a clean bill of health but still suffering subtle intellectual and behavioral effects that may seriously impair their ability to work and interact normally with other people. These residual problems usually escape detection through ordinary medical exams, problems that are mystifying, frightening and debilitating.
These may include difficulties with memory loss, attention span, concentration and abstract thinking; emotional instability, personality changes, social lethargy, impulsivity and sometimes anti-social, violent or even criminal behavior. Many are not able to hold a job. Some sufferers think they are going crazy and are accused of malingering. There may be sexual dysfunction, weight gain and feeling overwhelmed by the simplest tasks. After time there can be depression, loss of self-esteem and confidence. Usually the symptoms represent problems that are very different from previous functioning.
My symptoms included dyslexia from which I had never previously suffered. I was a professional Horary astrologer but totally lost the ability to remember any of the rules. I was easily fatigued and was increasingly isolating myself socially. I felt I had lost my creativity. Interestingly enough I had never sustained a head injury. It was only because my significant other (now my husband) at the time was a chiropractor and referred brain-injured patients to a clinic nearby that I was ever diagnosed. I actually went to the clinic to accompany a friend there. As it happened, I ended up being tested and surprisingly entered rehabilitation therapy myself. My problems stemmed from never learning to crawl as an infant, not a head injury at all.
As I progressed with my therapy, it occurred to me to gather birth data of patients to determine the signature patterns. Astrologers will not be surprised to learn that the tell-tale chart factors involve the Third House, the signs Gemini and Sagittarius and the planets that rule them, Mercury and Jupiter. It seems that Neptune plays a role when the problems are not from injury but from skipped developmental steps in childhood. I have Neptune rising in my chart opposing Mars and squaring Jupiter.
I got to a place where I recognized the symptoms from my astrological clients' case histories and checked the horoscope for the signature patterns. I have referred a great many clients to the rehab center and each one was diagnosed with neurological problems. You want to look for the signs, houses and planets in question and see if there are challenging aspects, sometimes involving the Sun and Moon. Do not diagnose neurological problems from the chart alone. Just because the signature is there is no guarantee that this is the problem. You must also take a case history and find out if there are symptoms to warrant a diagnosis.
My brother developed a serious case of bi-polar disorder. He could not work and came to live with me rather than going into an institution. He suffered extensive brain damage in the upper cortex from working with the crop dusters when we grew up on a farm in Iowa. The psychiatrist told me he would never recover or work again. "That's what you think," I thought to myself. It was a two-year process but today he is completely recovered, takes no medication and works as a powerful shaman healer. I have many similar stories in my case files. My brother's chart features Sagittarius rising with a conjunction of Moon, Mars and Jupiter in the First House in Capricorn. I have since associated Jupiter with bi-polar disorder.
The next question-and it is a huge problem-is what are most people going to do if they indeed have undiagnosed neurological problems that are impairing their life? Traditional medical treatments are usually a dead end. The doctors will say there is nothing wrong unless you are lucky enough to find the right one. Treatment is a very specific therapy. The clinic in my local area is The Northwest Neurodevelopmental Training Center in Woodburn, Oregon. Patients from all of the country come there to be set up with a therapy they can do at home. Ask for Susan Scott. In Seattle, there is the Developmental Movement and Education Center. Ask for Bette Lamont.
You must not underestimate the terrible suffering that can be attributed to this silent epidemic. If you diagnose just one person and lead them to healing you will have saved a life.
