Teachings from the Western Mystery Traditions:
The Esoteric "Paths of Return"
All Opposites within Us are
Lovers Seeking to Unite

Like two sides of the same coin, every quality within us has its contrary opposite. Faithful, fearful; elated, depressed; loving, unloving- ad infinitum. All our warring inner opposites are divine lovers seeking to unite. Their attraction to one another is enormous, for the two make us whole. Even our depression, unloving thoughts, or fear have something of value to teach us if we will take note. Many on the spiritual path live in the lopsided, shadowy world of "spiritual bypass," pretending we are loving and holy when we are not. For, having denied the shadow, we aren1t quite finished with the inner work that leads to an authentic knowing that "all is God."
If we consciously wrestle with our doubts and contradictions, these warring inner opposites rub and jostle one another into a greater "third" big enough to include both sides of any dualism. We will shift from hating one part of ourselves while loving the other part, and learn to work with the dynamism that fuels all creativity.
The Law of Complementarity runs throughout this created universe, as any subatomic physicist will tell you. At the basis of human life we are both the particle and the wave function (both creature and Spirit), who behave as one. All our essential steps in coming whole stem from this searing battle of the opposites. So instead of avoiding conflict, or pretending we have no shadow, we are to enter honestly into every conflict and discover for ourselves that all is one. It is only through the heart that the bridge can be built beyond duality. The bridge is Love. And it works through the Law of Attraction. Trying to be positive only is an error of one-sidedness. Love and acceptance of all that is brings us to the perfection hidden within every human soul.
This does not mean we need to act out our "shadowy" parts, such as jealousy, possessiveness, anger, victimhood, or greed. It simply means that when one of the unwanted feelings or thoughts comes over us, instead of playing like it1s not there, or worse, denying it completely, we simply go within, own the feeling, and focus on it for awhile. Then, we will see what is the nucleus, the image that1s holding this thought process in place. And we will understand it. This kind of inner work brings authenticity to life, giving you the opportunity to make conscious anything that1s still held over from your past that is keeping you from feeling in balance in your relationships.
Once a negative thought or feeling is accessed, made conscious, owned, and forgiven, it dissipates the pattern that1s holding it in place. Or, at least it starts to. If it1s a core issue let1s say, surrounded by something as all-encompassing as low self-esteem, or always having felt powerless in your life there may need to be several months of inner work and journaling, even perhaps going into therapy, to uncover this lost part of yourself.
The light and dark sides of your nature both emanate from one human Divine Self. The light is the conscious side of your psyche, all that you have already known and integrated. The dark is your unconscious psyche, all that is still unknown, unexpressed, or denied. Both sides contain a sacred truth. As Dr. Carl Jung tells us:
"The One will let go of the Other, because if it did, it would lose its character; and the other pushes itself away from the One in order to exist at all. Thus there arises a tension of opposites between the One and the Other" that when wrestled with honestly become a balanced third and higher quality.
To progress on the spiritual journey, we must face the divine ordeal of knowing just how to relate to both sides of human life. There is much darkness in our world. Today, in fact, it appears that the human shadow is all around us. This may mean it1s "up" for us to notice and take responsibility for. It1s not possible to heal something that is still unconscious; it must show its face so it can be recognized, owned, and released in conscious understanding and compassion.
Our position here on earth today is perilous. We may be in danger of being swept away by the dark and suffering aspects of human life war, hunger, disease, human misery. If we lose our footing, we are not only unhelpful; we can fall prey to depression and loss of meaning.
Our task is to stand tall in our true identity as Light Bearers, willing to meet the Dark on its own terms, willing to match its strength. As Jesus modeled for us, we do not fear the Dark; we simply say: "Get thee behind me, Satan!" And we go about our business embodying the spiritual Self who holds steady in the tension of opposites as all spiritual warriors do. We find that zero point in the middle where the energetic pull from both extremes is balanced.
Anything that splits in two within your psyche signals that something is "in the cooker," something in you is undergoing the process of transforming. Twoness is an intermediate state, never a final outcome. Opposites are always seeking to unite. Your job here on earth is to hasten this joining. As you practice balancing the opposites, you bridge the gap between the One and the Other to create a pathway for the Self to enter and take you to the new and higher way.
It1s wonderful to realize that you never have to deny any part of yourself to be spiritual. You only have to be willing to be conscious at all times of what1s appropriate and when. What1s more, you have the capacity to stand tall in your centered Self, whatever contrary winds swirl around you.
