Astrology Notes: Astrology, Healing and the Evolution of Consciousness

Saturn and Chiron:
Forcing the Hand of Love
Part 3 of 3 Parts

by Martin Lass
Introduction

First, note that this article follows on from Part Two, posted on this site in February.

The first part explored the recent (Sep 25 and Oct 23, 2003) and upcoming (Aug 15 and Dec 27, 2004) Saturn (in Cancer)/Chiron (in Capricorn) oppositions in general terms. Wanting to understand the events and circumstances of what went on during the final months of last year and wanting to be prepared for the return of this planetary aspect later this year, it might be wise to look at how these transiting planets will set off their natal counterparts, whether directly or by resonance.

The second part looked at the transiting Chiron/Saturn opposition and how it sets off natal Chiron in each of the signs. This month, we will look at how this opposition sets off natal Saturn in each of the signs.

To take full advantage of the following information (last month and this month), you will need to know where Chiron and Saturn lie in your astrological chart. You can find this out for free at: http://www.astro.com/horoscopes/ahor.asp.
Go to Chart Drawings and enter your birth details. The sign positions of the planets will be displayed on the left in the chart box.

Note that the degree to which you will feel and experience the following will depend on several factors: 1) whether the transiting Chiron/Saturn opposition 'touches' (makes aspects or angles to) any of your planets or not, in particular, your own Chiron and/or Saturn and 2) whether your own Chiron and/or Saturn 'touches' (makes aspects or angles to) any other planets in your birth chart. These factors go beyond the scope of this short article. Ask your astrologer to calculate these aspects for you.

However, having said this, everybody will feel/experience the Chiron/Saturn effect in some way, whether in a minor or a major way. It's a matter of planetary resonance-like the strings of an instrument resonating in sympathy with another instrument. It's also important to point out that, although the upcoming focal dates are Aug 15 and Dec 27, the influence will hang overhead to a greater or lesser degree throughout the year. This affords us an unparalleled opportunity to heal our long-standing wounds and issues and to awaken a little more Love in our hearts.

Your Saturn in Aries
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of self-worth (or lack thereof), self-image, self-reliance, personal responsibility, and starting new projects, contributed to helping you become more responsible, self-reliant, patient, focused, practical, and sure of yourself?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to stand up for yourself?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of realizing that, no matter what the events, circumstances, or people in your life were, every part of it was an opportunity to learn to Love yourself a little more. Mostly, we learn these lessons by reflection-i.e. by learning to Love others around us, as unacknowledged mirrors of ourselves. Sometimes, though, we are given the opportunity to learn it directly by being challenged to stand up for ourselves. Saturn in Aries (actually, in all the signs, but particularly in Aries), when catalyzed by Chiron, is a tough, but loving teacher in this respect.

Your Saturn in Taurus
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of personal emotional and/or material welfare, comfort, abundance (or lack thereof), trust, security, and stability, contributed to helping you become more responsible with materials, wealth, and resources, more patient and methodical, better able to make long term plans and carry them out, more trusting of the process of life, more sure that you will receive your due, and more sure that the wealth of Love in your Heart will carry you through the most difficult of times, despite possible discomforts and apparent (but illusory) absences of resources and/or opportunities?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develo
p these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to acknowledge that the material world is but a reflection of the spiritual world, and that your greatest abundance flows from an open and trusting Heart?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of realizing that we each already have everything we need for the current stage of our journey. When we fail to acknowledge or see this, we are stuck. We blame everything and everybody around us for not giving us what we 'need' and/or 'deserve'. In astrology, we call this "Saturn influence," when, in actual fact, we are being encouraged to see things differently-to see how in and what ways we are able to make use of what we already have at hand, both materially and spiritually. Abundance is not given to us by anybody or anything; it's awakened to; it's already there.

Your Saturn in Gemini
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the area of thoughts, ideas, communication, siblings, and/or the dissemination and/or collection of knowledge, contributed to helping you become a more disciplined and logical thinker, a person who is able to communicate clearly, talk straight, and bring ideas down to earth, and someone who can grasp all the details required to see the bigger picture?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to learn how to have an idea, vision, or wish and make it manifest in the real world?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of giving our ideas, dreams, and visions a practical and down-to-earth expression. Such is the training of potential co-creators. Flights of fancy and unfocused thinking may be fun and/or may allow us to temporarily escape/avoid our issues and wounds, but, eventually, we must begin to do what we came here to do. By taking serious steps in this direction, we will naturally and inevitably come up against all the things within us that stop us from evolving/Loving. Our greatest opportunity-and our greatest potential freedom-lies right here.

Your Saturn in Cancer
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the area of family (maternal, paternal or offspring) and/or community, contributed to helping you become a more responsible family member, a person who can hold his/her counsel, a person who is not prone to emotional outbursts, but is capable of weighing even the most difficult situations and circumstances with clarity, calmness, and responsibility, and a person who understands, appreciates, and respects the value of social and family order and structure?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to take responsibility for caring for, nurturing, supporting, and loving yourself?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of realizing that the support, caring, nurturing, and Love you seek is already all around you. It's just in forms that you may not be recognizing or acknowledging. The first step toward such a realization consists of finding the Love that already lies within you. For this, the balancing sides of otherwise-emotional reactions must be sought methodically, seriously, and persistently. Between all the extremes of our various and daily emotions lies the Love that encompasses and dissolves all issues and wounds.

Your Saturn in Leo
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of self-appraisal, outer recognition, creativity, self-expression, romance, children, power, and leadership, contributed to helping you become more fulfilled with who you are, more creative, able to express yourself more freely and fearlessly, able to enter and maintain your intimate relationships despite the inevitable power/ego struggles, able to take up leadership/power roles with more confidence and charisma, and less concerned with the need for others accolades, recognition, and adulation?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to allow your true nature, beyond all ego-driven illusions, to shine forth-creatively, spiritually, romantically, and/or in mentoring and/or leadership roles?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of trying on the many masks of personality. We seek acceptance, approval, confirmation, accolade, recognition, and so forth from others. This may satisfy our lower nature, but only temporarily. Something within us knows when it doesn't ring true. And so we are off again, trying on new masks, new personalities, driven by our need to shine in others' eyes. Over time, the pieces of us that do ring true will slowly come together in a new unity-the kernel of our true Self, finally allowed its true expression in this incarnate world. By the time others cannot help but aspire to the way we shine, we will no longer care what others think, but will be fulfilled simply in the shining.

It's a matter of learning to Love the form we have been given in this lifetime-our Divine Design-knowing that, in essence, we are all things, but, for this lifetime, we have a job to do and that job requires a garb, a uniform-a uni-form, i.e. the whole and healed Self.

Your Saturn in Virgo
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of work, service, methodology, health, healing, attention to details, rules and regulations, and so forth, contributed to helping you become more concerned with the welfare and maintenance of the body (yours or others), more concerned with details and with getting things just the right way, more responsible when it comes to work, the way to do things, and serving others in some way, and more discerning and pragmatic around the otherwise-vague and emotionally driven credulity of others?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to begin to take your spiritual evolution and development-mirrored in your earthly Body and Mind-seriously, responsibly, and in a structured and persistent way?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of putting the pieces of ourselves back together. All that we see around us that appears to need fixing, correcting, setting right, putting back together, organizing, or otherwise improving, is a mirror of these pieces of ourselves. Taken in the broadest sense, putting the pieces back together-whether in the outside world or within ourselves-is Healing. We seek to 'get it right', because we innately wish to become whole once more. The fact that we externalize our dissatisfaction by being critical of others and their ways and/or by ever trying to fix things, improve things, and/or correct them is of no consequence. Inside or outside, it's all the same. The lessons are there to be learned. And the lesson, as always, is Love.

Your Saturn in Libra
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of relationship, partnerships (personal and business), commitment or lack thereof, balance (in all areas of life) or lack thereof, and so forth, contributed to helping you become more committed, steadfast, and responsible in relationships/partnerships (personal and/or business), more concerned with creating stable balance in your life and in the lives of those around you, more aware of the personal elements of given situations that might either threaten or enhance the smooth flowing of interrelations, and more able to juggle/place/tweak these elements in your life and in the lives of those around you?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to realized/acknowledge that relationship is a sacred mirror that allows each one of us to gradually see who we are, and that relationship takes seriousness and work, as well as fun and play?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of slowly and gradually acknowledging that everything we see in others, without exception-the good, the bad, and the indifferent-is us. Relationship is a sacred mirror. What we deny, disown, ignore, or fail to acknowledge in ourselves-negatives and positives-we tend to project onto others. We resent them or infatuate them. We think the world is out of balance when we see others with traits we mistakenly think we do not possess. If their traits are negative, we think we need to fix them, correct them, set them right, or outright get rid of the traits. If their traits are positive, we think we need to try to be like them; either that or we secretly wish to bring them down. In truth, the only thing that's out of balance is our perception of others, of ourselves, and of the world around us. In truth, we have everything everybody else has. Only the forms differ. Awakening to this truth is the primary purpose of relationship.

Your Saturn in Scorpio
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of joint enterprises and/or finances, commitment, intensity and focus, death, loss, and/or spirituality, contributed to helping you become more concerned and serious about honoring your commitments to others, more concerned and serious about the unseen/hidden factors in life (beyond the obvious/visible), more focused and intense in whatever you turn your attention to, and more able to see the blessings in crises, the profits in losses, the births in deaths, and so forth?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to look beyond the visible/obvious/material world and see a deeper meaning, purpose, connection, and/or plan in every aspect of your own life and in the lives of others?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of realizing that all things have their season, and that every death/loss/crises has its equal birth/gain/blessing. Sometimes, we need to look beyond the exterior appearance of things-beyond the visible façade-to become party to the inner workings of life. This in itself is its own reward.

Moreover, as we work, interact, and make enterprises with others, we may gradually become aware that things fall into place in a certain way once we let go of our attachment to forms, and once we let go of our fears, suspiciousness, and lack of trust that others might be gaining more than we are. In truth, all interactions bear equal profits and losses. In truth, there are no winners or losers, only lessons of Love.

Your Saturn in Sagittarius
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of higher learning, morality, optimism (or lack thereof), and the search for meaning and truth, contributed to helping you become more inclined to delve into the deeper meaning of life, to educate yourself beyond the bare necessities, to ponder questions of morality, religion, philosophy, and/or to travel the world (actually or virtually) in search of new adventures/experiences and different ways of looking at things?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to become more philosophical about life in general, more amenable to different points of view, and more serious, responsible, persistent, disciplined, and dedicated in the pursuit of finding the larger picture/plan of why we are here?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of expanding our worldview, beginning with the re-evaluation of moral, philosophical, and behavioral questions that we may have thought were already settled. We are taught certain things as we are growing up; others things rub off unconsciously. This is right, that is wrong, and so forth. Until we start to question these seemingly inalienable axioms, we remain stuck, cut off from Love. This is because Love includes all things and all viewpoints. Seeing the flipsides of things we would otherwise judge solely as negative or positive is the first step. As Hamlet says, "There is a special providence in the fall of a sparrow." Our healing and evolution of consciousness requires us to stand back and view the big picture and see that all things Serve evolution; all things Serve our awakening to Love.

Your Saturn in Capricorn
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of control, responsibility, authority, ambition, respectability, and so on, contributed to helping you become more organized, responsible, frugal, conservative, able to look after others, able to plan and carry out practical plans of action, able to cut to the chase when others around you are indecisive, vague, or impractical, and able to stand up in front of others and feel fulfilled in yourself?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to be able to fashion your life and the world around you according to your deepest desires and wishes-to be able to manifest your dreams in a practical way, thus benefiting not only you, but others as well?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of mastering the visible/material world. This mastery is a reflection of inner self-mastery and is a requirement of our healing and evolutionary journey. We are in training to become co-creators of the world-ultimately, co-creators of life itself. The spark that brings our creations alive and maintains them in time and space is Love. We cannot master a thing until we have learned to Love it. Until then, the thing rules us. Our judgments, biases, and misperceptions rule us. This is reflected in our outer lives, if we have the courage to see it. Then, as we consciously build the world around us, we will see our remaining wounds and issues in the canvas, so to speak, allowing us the blessed opportunity to deal with these and to purge our creations of their final blemishes.

Your Saturn in Aquarius
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of group participation, society in general, originality and innovation, and feeling cut off from others in some way, contributed to helping you become more impartial, fair, balanced in your viewpoints and appraisals of others and of life around you, innovative, able to work well with others, and to see your place within the larger context of society and life in general?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to see that you have a unique and special place/role in the larger context of society/life in general, that you have a contribution to make that is valuable and original, and that you are a part of a greater whole, not isolated, cut off, alienated, or a stranger?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of stepping back and seeing things/life/people from a high vantage point. This can be difficult, because it may make us feel like outsiders, alone, and/or cut off. However, only by seeing this bigger picture-an impartial view-can we begin to awaken to our own special and unique place in, and contribution to, this larger plan. We each have a place and purpose that no other can fill. Moreover, the Aquarian connection warns us that, if we think our contribution is superior to others' contributions and/or that it can survive in a vacuum, without the participation, help, interaction, and/or collaboration of others (the Leo illusion), then we will remain cut off from life, cut off from Love. This placement is perhaps the most difficult to grasp: we are eternally One with everything and separate from all others. Beyond Aquarius-beyond Saturn-this apparent paradox is resolved. The answer lies in Love, as always.

Your Saturn in Pisces
(in relation to the upcoming transiting Chiron/Saturn oppositions)

How have repressive, restrictive, limiting, disciplinary, heavy-handed, controlling, and authoritarian influences-people, circumstances, and/or events-particularly in the areas of the inner psyche, past lives, karma, compassion, working selflessly for others, institutions, hidden enemies, and so forth, contributed to helping you become more balanced in your appraisal of others' predicaments (without losing yourself in their dramas, self-pity, issues, and wounds), more centered in yourself, less fearful of approaching your own deep and/or hidden wounds and issues, more inclined to delve into your past (and, by reflection, the pasts of others), and more able to approach your emotional/mental/psychic welfare in a practical, serious, responsible and persistent way?

Conversely, how has the absence/deficit of the aforementioned external factors helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you to develop these positive traits for yourself?

Either way-excess or absence/deficit-how has it showed, helped, taught, impelled, encouraged, and/or forced you 1) to face your deepest fears, doubts, issues, and wounds, 2) to realize that, although you must make certain efforts toward your own healing and evolution of consciousness, you do have the capacity to do so, and, 3) to realize that all your efforts to rescue others, to prop them up, to 'save' them from others (or themselves), to soothe their wounds, and to help them resolve their issues, was simply a projection of your own wish for healing and evolution of consciousness and, in the end, your help equally hindered them from finding their own way?

The Healing journey consists, in part, of having the courage, persistence, and resolve to stand before the dark parts of ourselves, without flinching, without running, and, most importantly, without trying to fix, change, correct, or get rid of anything. We are challenged to look into our darkness and Love what we see. As we Love each orphaned/disowned/rejected part, so it is rejoined with the whole of us, like a prodigal son. Such is the true meaning of healing.

Conclusion

We try to avoid the Pain of our wounds and issues, not realizing that the Pain is a symptom of our fragmentedness, a symptom of our judgments, misperceptions, and blame. The path of Healing lies through the Pain, through the wound, through the darkness. As we approach the Pain/darkness/wound/issue, allowing the Light of our higher consciousness to illuminate it, so the Pain is transformed into Love, the darkness into Light, the wound is healed, and the issues are resolved. We become more whole, more healed, more unified, and closer to our divine origins. This is Chiron's promise, as part of the greater cosmic Plan of Love.

Surely, such an outcome-the awakening to Love-is worth the effort that Saturn requires.

Love and light to all!
