Politically and geophysically, we have been experiencing a series of extreme, world-wide events that are just too dramatic to ignore. You've heard people refer to them as being "of Biblical proportions." Indeed, they are.
Chaotic, complex, and frightening, we fool ourselves by trying to understand them through the lens of the material, rather than the spiritual. Placing our faith in paradigms and structures we have created, and in the people who take power over them, lead us to wonder why such extreme things happen, and why these structures are ultimately destroyed. After all, we have built a mighty system, right?
Connect the dots and you'll see the pattern of what is happening. Some, think it is "coincidence". Others, think it nonsense. All of the political events, and the geophysical events listed in this article are factual, and well documented. They can be Googled. The connection is too obvious to ignore, and there are far too many of them to deny. By Carin Martin, professional Astrologer, teacher, & lecturer. I can still recall my reactions when as a child I first saw that mystical circle that is the astrological chart. To me, it was a flat, one dimensional circle on a piece of paper. Inside of the circle were obscure, mysterious glyphs sitting motionless in the twelve little wedges of pie that make up the twelve houses of the zodiac. As I struggled to learn the meaning of the glyphs, the houses, the signs, the planets, the aspects, it was akin to a long, strenuous but exciting initiation into a secret society. No initiate to Skull and Bones or the Knights Templar could have been more excited than I was to learn all these ancient "secret codes". But as I've often told my students, it was not until the flat image of the chart became three dimensional for me that I knew I was finally "getting it." Nurturing (i.e., meeting the child's physical and emotional needs) is not limited to the mother, and can be provided by both parents or any number of people, but the sum experience of nurturing develops the infant's sense of what psychoanalyst Erik Erikson called "basic trust." Whether the person is basically secure or insecure depends on how that nurturing was experienced.

Economic Downturn
There is a dark mood in the nation. Not only has King George the Imbecile pushed us over a cliff and into the sea, but he has weighted us down with rocks. Gas prices climb ever higher, dragging up the cost of everything but the equity in our homes and the value of our stock portfolios, which are plummeting. The war in Iraq is a messy quagmire, with any move to extricate ourselves requiring the courage needed to rip open an ill-healing wound. Afghanistan, meanwhile, looms as another potential sinkhole, not mended when the time was ripe, and now demanding a heavy penance in blood and treasure. And, over everything, hangs our massive and ever-expanding debt to China and our debilitating dependence on foreign oil, reminders of our growing inability to manifest the basic material requirements of the independence and freedom about which we like to brag.

I have a new favorite cartoon. It’s a rendering by James True (www.jtrue.com) that’s both humorous and profound. The cartoon shows a tomato stalk with several tomatoes growing on it, at various stages of development. One tomato is large and ripe. The tomato stalk says to the ripe tomato, “We have to let you go.” The title of the cartoon is Layoffs at the Plant.

Karma: The Functioning of Cause and Effect, Part 4

Yes, but this doesn't mean those relationships are predetermined. We may have certain karmic predispositions to feel close to or to have friction with certain people. Nevertheless, these relationships may not continue along those same lines. If we are kind to those who speak ill of us and try to communicate effectively with them, the re-lationships will change. We'll also create positive karma, which will bring happiness in the future.
We are not karmically bound to others. Nor are there "soul mates," special people who are the one and only one for us. Since we've had infinite past lives, we've had contact with every being sometime before. Also, our relationship with any particular person constantly changes.

Sacrifice:
The True Meaning of the Word
The word 'sacrifice' comes from the root word 'sacer,' which means "to make holy." Making something we've experienced holy, then, can be known as a sacrifice. But how do we experience making something sacred or holy?
When we first commit to the spiritual path, we have no idea what's in store for us. We expect that our lives will get better because we've decided to be spiritual, to give ourselves to the God of our understanding in service to the world. However, it doesn't turn out to be that way. And our innocence is quickly shattered as we begin to see that anything in our way of being that is "shadowy" or negative or just plain over, rises right up in our face to be recognized and dealt with. Dr. Carl Jung said it plainly: When you enter a spiritual path, the first thing that comes up is your shadow. You shadow is all those unconscious parts acting out through you that you've never faced or integrated.

We Are What We Repeatedly Do

If we are completely honest, we may find it sobering to face the patterns and admit what we repeatedly do. Another way to describe the phrase repeatedly do is to use the words what we are dedicated to. By dedicated, I mean we may say we want or desire a certain thing but continue to do another. We are dedicated to the “other” and Aristotle offers that this “other” has simply become our predominate behavior out of habit.

While driving to a meeting a few weeks ago I sped along highway 315 North. In the middle of the racing traffic on the dotted white line I spied a snapping turtle. A sign. Her head, feet, and tail were extended fully from her shell. When my sight communicated her peril to my mind, I swerved and then searched t he rearview mirror to confirm what I just witnessed. How did she get out there in the middle of the highway? More important, what would be her fate?

Hemingway’s Unfinished Business

Who would have thought that the dead have unfinished business? But, if the model of our lives on the other side that the guys upstairs have provided is anything like correct, it would make sense. A chat I had with Hemingway a few months ago sheds light on the subject. Perhaps putting it on the record here will serve as the finger pointing to the moon.
During World War II, writer Ernest Hemingway, though a civilian, performed three substantial actions to assist the war effort. Those actions have been largely ignored and in any case have not been much fleshed out. The first, in 1942, was The Crook Factory, which organized his extensive contacts in Havana into a semi-official counter-espionage network. The second, at about that time, and into 1943 I think, was his use of his boat Pilar as an anti-submarine scout. The third was his leadership of French partisans to find the least-defended route into Paris for our army in the summer of 1944.
