Astrologer's Notes:

Aquarius

by Basil Fearrington
The Signs of the zodiac represent twelve different archetypes of human expression. The dominance of a particular archetype can occur in many ways. It can be seen through the Sign placement of the Sun, Moon, or Ascendant or when there are multiple planets in a single Sign. The Moon in Aquarius exemplifies the Aquarian archetype the most because the needs of the personality are tied to the kind of expression that is the Aquarian archetype.

Understanding archetypes is very important in the process of learning analysis in astrology. The planets represent certain faculties that, when placed in a Sign, need to be fulfilled in terms of that Sign’s archetype. For example, we know that Mercury represents the way one needs to think and communicate in order to be fulfilled. We know that the basic archetype of Cancer is linked to emotional security, safety and knowing without a doubt where one stands. So, if Mercury is in Cancer, the person needs to think in terms of emotional security. They may opt for another way of thinking but what fulfills the most is to think in terms of emotional security.

My essay for this column has to do with the Aquarius archetype, fitting for this month of February. It is an archetype that is quite worthy of discussion because the core meaning of Aquarius is connected to that which is most needed in the times we live in……HELPING OTHERS.

Aquarius is called the “Water Bearer.” This is the name given to this Sign from the constellation in which it was formerly found. It is unfortunately misleading, since Aquarius has nothing at all to do with the water element in astrology. The “water bearer” is simply pouring new ideas, innovation, inspiration, and concepts into a stream of influence upon the world, in the name of social progress and humanitarianism.

All of the things that you have ever read about Aquarius can be summed up and linked to one essential and that is the idea of helping people live better lives. This can happen in many ways using many different methods but through all of them, the energy is about helping a person to live a better life. Aquarius is connected to humanitarianism, to a great social focus, helping people through religiosity, standing up for or leading causes that help people, helping humanity through innovation, through the power of the intellect, and even via social service in politics.

These words of description about Aquarius sound pious and high-minded but that obviously isn't always the case. There are two ways of expression for every archetype: positive and negative. The negative side of the Aquarian archetype is destructively rebellious, autocratic, unwilling to be flexible, over-individualistic, eccentric, and too intense. How the energy is expressed is a choice made by the individual who has the Aquarius archetype strong in the horoscope.

EXAMPLES

Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali has the Moon, Mercury, and Venus in Aquarius. Ali's awareness of social inequality came naturally as a part of the environment that he was born into in Louisville, Kentucky. During those early years, racism was overt. There were still separate entrances in restaurants for whites that minorities couldn't enter.

It was after Ali won a Gold Medal in the Olympics that his awareness of social inequality magnified and he ended up throwing his Medal away because of it. He would later change his name from Cassius Clay to Muhammad Ali and join The Nation of Islam. His goal, his thought pattern was that he wanted to help to change the inequalities that black people experienced through this organization's ability to provide knowledge that bolstered pride and enhanced identity. The thought process was good but would prove to be naive as Ali would later have the kind of problems with the organization that soured his viewpoint.

Ali's refusal to accept the draft was an example of the Aquarian rebelliousness but was at the same time his way of standing up for a war that he didn't believe in. He felt that the Vietcong had not oppressed and that his oppressor was right here in America "so why am I going there to fight for my oppressor?" It was a very divisive stand that took a lot of courage.

Throughout Ali's professional career right up to today, he has been reknown for being a people-person who always tries to help those who need help. He has done this to his own financial detriment as a lot of hanger-ons did so just for financial gain and little else. Still, despite his battle with Parkinson's Syndrome, Ali has always come out swinging for the underdog and for the person who needs help.

Princess Diana

The late Princess Diana's reputation for humanitarian concerns is well known. Hers was a constant presence at charities, hospitals, aid to AIDS patients, aid to people suffering with leprosy, the homeless, and more. At one point in her life, she was involved with a hundred charities!

We can see this propensity to an "others" approach in the western hemisphere emphasis of her horoscope with the Sun punctuating it through its placement in the 7th House. The Moon in Aquarius is quite intensified by its opposition from Uranus.

Rush Limbaugh

I am always challenged whenever I write anything about Rush Limbaugh because I find it difficult to be objective and disconnected from a man whose way

of thinking about people, places, and things I loathe so much. Nevertheless, his horoscope represents a perfect display of the Aquarian archetype when it is directed to that which is social.

Limbaugh has become a very wealthy and even powerful man from the expression of his views on Conservatism and his castration of Liberalism and the Democratic Party. No broadcaster in the world enjoys anywhere close to the kind of income that he enjoys. There are clearly many whose beliefs reflect his.

Limbaugh has a way of thinking that is completely one-sided and is, quite often, disrespectful to anyone whose way of thinking is different than his own. Nevertheless, in his mind, he is absolutely sure that his political beliefs and ways of thinking are what are best to shape society to the benefit of all. No one can tell him anything different. If they should try, he immediately becomes defensive and contentious.

Limbaugh has an Aquarius Ascendant with Venus and Mars in Aquarius. Pluto's opposition to Mars shows us a few things. It is, first and foremost, an indication of a man who is difficult to get along with. "Raging, temperamental maniac" is a term that comes to mind. Pluto amplifies Mars to its maximum potential in terms of assertiveness and that which Mars rules in the horoscope, which, in this case, is the 3rd House! What's more, this opposition is at his Sun/Moon midpoint. All of this tells us that he needs to express social, humanitarian (in his mind) views in an assertive manner and he needs to do it professionally (Pluto rules the 10th House and Mars squares it).

John Lennon

John Lennon was a very off the wall, individualistic, unpredictable personality who became extremely involved with social inequalities, war, I suggest that you read http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Lennon#Political_activism to get a glimpse of his political leanings and his involvement with social causes.

Others who have a strong Aquarian archetype include, Harry Belafonte, Angela Davis, Bill Maher, Paul Newman, Huey Newton, Jackie Robinson, Sarah Palin, Denzel Washington, and Oprah Winfrey.
