Special Aspects
|
|
|
by Basil Fearrington |

|
There are a plethora of aspects in our astrological lexicon. In the formative years of study, the number of aspects in a horoscope confuses and makes interpretation challenging. I remember clearly my first couple of years of study. There was no astrological software and the personal computer did not exist so for starters, it took a bit of time constructing a chart. Then, as a newbie, you tried to interpret it. What did it mean when the Sun was trined by Jupiter and was also squared by Saturn? How did I interpret it when Mercury was sextiled by the Moon and opposed by Neptune? You ended up with a happy, sad, witty, but boring person if your interpretation was dependent upon the popular cookbooks of the time.
The first thing that happened to make aspect interpretation easier, as I advanced in studies, was to eliminate all trines and sextiles from the analysis. ( I covered the reasons for this in last month’s essay). Then, working with the hard aspects, you eventually learn to capsulate certain aspects, abbreviate them so that when you see them, your mind captures the essence of the aspect. Instead of the thought patterns becoming splintered, one story builds upon another to build a portrait.
The list of, “special aspects” are as follows. This list is taken from my book, “The New Way To learn Astrology.” It is intended to provide aspect focus for those in the learning process as well as to assist those with experience who are still struggling.
Special Aspects
Moon square Sun: always an indication that the parents were not on the same page at the time of conception someway, somehow, or that they grow into that status. For corroboration, check to see if the rulers or planets in Houses IV or X are involved in a hard aspect; also check if Saturn is retrograde. This is especially the case when the Moon squares the Sun at birth but can also apply to the opposition, less to the conjunction.
Saturn - Sun: ambition is important; importance of the father in the early development; for women, difficulties with men.
Pluto Sun: There is power being held back somehow, usually as a result of parental influence early on.
Saturn-Moon: the most ambitious aspect in a horoscope; emotional frustration; needs to be strategic.
Pluto Moon: In a female horoscope particularly, there is a strong suggestion of mother fixations, conflicts, influences, etc. In male horoscopes the influence is likely to be on having been smothered by the mother or perhaps a painful absence of maternal caring.
Jupiter Mars: Excess; being ahead of one’s time; an application of energy in the world that overdoes things.
Saturn Mars: Saturn wants to stop and Mars wants to go. Together, one stops when one should go and vice-versa. It makes for bad judgment, crucial mistakes and errors. I know of a man who has this opposition in the III-IX axis. People generally do not like him because he is a verbal agitator, always seeing an argument where there is none.
Neptune Mars: Magnetism; charm.
Pluto Mars: In the conjunction there is a very strong focus of energy; in the square, the way one wants to apply energy in the world is at odds with what the world will accept from that individual. This typically produces rebelliousness. In the opposition, it may be impossible to fulfill the needs of energy application. It can be way overdone, which, negatively, can result in meanness. It’s as though all that is seen is assertion.
Saturn Jupiter: There is a need to prove a point.
Pluto Jupiter: An entire volume can be written on this aspect. It is the aspect of great success potential. (Check the archives for my essay on The Signatures of Success & Prominence in the Horoscope). Three good examples of how this principle is embodied in personality include Angelina Jolie, Bruce Lee, and the late John Lennon.
Uranus Saturn: Pressure to resolve the old and the new, the conventional and the avant garde, the conservative and the liberal. Uranus always wins out in the end. Muhammad Ali and Barbara Streisand are the best examples that I can think of.
Pluto Saturn: The most potentially difficult aspect in any horoscope as well as the most difficult transit or arc. Please see last month’s essay.
Please keep in mind that the above aspect relationships refer to the major hard aspects only and not to sextiles and trines. The slower moving planet in each aspect (except Moon-Sun) is listed first because the slower moving planet conditions the symbolism of the planet it contacts. Writing and speaking astrological aspects in this way emphasizes what’s actually happening.
Idealism
Idealism, which is always an important part of one’s psychology, is suggested when there is a conjunction in pairs between Sun-Mercury-Venus or as a group in conjunction; contacts of these planets from Neptune. Idealism frequently manifests artistically, religiously, aesthetically, or spiritually. To a lesser degree, idealism is also suggested by the hard aspects between Neptune and Jupiter.
When idealism is not being used productively, it is often used as a defensive device. For example, I know of a client who has a Neptune, Venus, and Mercury in conjunction in the 7th House. He has had lifelong relationship issues because he selects partners who are beneath his station in life, especially intellectually. With two failed marriages, he decided that he was going to go in search of a “God fearing woman” who is active in the church. There is clearly nothing wrong with that. However, such a selection was still covering the fact that he didn’t want to face up to an equal in a relationship without having some kind of control factor placed there for him. The man was full of relationship idealism that was in place to protect him from certain fears about relationships.
Realism Aspects
It is important to know that when the Sun or Moon make hard aspects with the planets Saturn through Pluto, there is the suggestion of demanding life conditions in development through controls (Saturn), intensifications (Uranus), bewilderment (Neptune), or power struggle (Pluto). These demanding conditions and situations determine growth.
When these outer-planet aspects occur with the Sun or Moon in a horoscope, then the person takes on the significance of these aspects at the core of his or her life orientation.
In more advanced studies, this is also significant when the Sun makes hard aspect contact to the midpoint of two outer planets. For example, in my horoscope the Sun is at (makes hard aspect contact with) with the Uranus/Pluto midpoint (by conjunction). It is also squared by Saturn. The drives for fulfillment of ambition and independence have been extremely enduring throughout my life, over and above anything else. The two needs intermingle. Fulfillment of ambition assists the need for independence.
By learning to abbreviate aspects in your mind, the analysis of a horoscope becomes streamlined and more simplistic. These special aspect relationships should help you with that process.
