We Are What We Repeatedly Do

by Rev. David Ault
At the gym, as I paced myself on the inclined treadmill, I became completely transfixed by the back of the t-shirt of the person tread-milling in front of me. It read, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.” Aristotle

I smiled at the synchronicity. Only hours before, I had discovered that quote for the first time on a friend’s Facebook page and immediately wrote it down to use as a reference for an upcoming talk. Aristotle’s words so resonated with me that I found myself a bit surprised I’d never come across them before.

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, therefore, is not an act but a habit.”

The big question then became, “What do I repeatedly do?”

The answer(s) I formulated while still traversing on the treadmill seemed too broad, too vague for what felt like a personal “writing on the wall” experience. There was evidently a call for deeper self-reflection.

Formulating more intimate questions, I began breaking it down to what I call Humanities Basic Four; Career, Health, Relationships and Finances.

What do I repeatedly do regarding my career?

What do I repeatedly do regarding my health?

What do I repeatedly do regarding my relationships?

What do I repeatedly do regarding my finances?

If we are completely honest, we may find it sobering to face the patterns and admit what we repeatedly do. Another way to describe the phrase repeatedly do is to use the words what we are dedicated to. By dedicated, I mean we may say we want or desire a certain thing but continue to do another. We are dedicated to the “other” and Aristotle offers that this “other” has simply become our predominate behavior out of habit.

I feel confident to use the word excellence when speaking of my career for my career has always seemingly been birthed from my creativity. Why is that? As far back as grade school there were repetitive, habitual comments from teachers telling me I was talented. It was said so casually, so much, so often that I accepted it as my truth. In retrospect, I see how that feedback fostered a belief that I could support myself utilizing my talents. And I have, either as an actor, singer/songwriter, author, producer, keynote speaker, minister or combinations thereof – all expressions of my creativity from the moment I drove off a college campus back in 1981.

However, I cannot use the word excellence when it comes to the other three.

My relationship with my health has been hit or miss over the years. Challenges have certainly come my way and provided numerous wake-up calls. Yet even now, after those wake-up calls, I still lose sight of the balance of self-care vs. work. I fall prey to an old belief of not enough time or simply not being good enough or athletic enough. I still drink coffee and eat sugar though I know I’d be much better off without them. My dedication of thought has been more towards the reasoning of can’t as opposed to can. With health, I still have unchartered territory for the habitual creation of excellence.

My relationship with relationships humbly continues to unlayer residual dysfunction through self-created co-dependence - all through the practiced, unconscious dedication of focusing “savior-complex” attention onto others. I own that. Even after awareness of this, I still have those knee-jerk reactionary thoughts of, “Oh, I can fix this for them.” “Oh, I can show them how good life can be.” “Oh, I can save them.” Oh my. And faithfully, truth reminds me, I can only hold the space for someone to find the way to do that for themselves. I can’t DO that for anyone – they have to choose solution. You see, even though teachers told me I was talented, I had to take that and DO something with it.

And my relationship with finances throughout the years has, at times, been burdened with fear and worry when the ebb seemed far more prevalent than the flow. I was never taught the concept of “Source is constant” as a child. I observed a habitual ceremony of worry and anxiety, month after month, year after year. With prosperity, I still have unchartered territory for the habitual creation of excellence.

But here’s the thing. It’s all been birthed from what I’ve repeatedly dedicated my thoughts to.

You and I know this. We know intellectually that we drink from a wellspring that can never run dry. We know there is more than enough. We know that we were born to thrive, grow, expand and experience aliveness. We know that we are loveable. We know that we are capable and on and on. We do KNOW this because we are connected to that which is ALL-KNOWING. Our pain originates from the practiced suppression of this knowing – from our repeated denial of it.

So, I got teachers to tell me I was talented. Maybe you learned the principles of more than enough as a child. Maybe you observed genuine love between your parents and so the belief in powerful, intimate connection is totally believable for you. Maybe you are a natural athlete and you never question your physical capabilities. Or, maybe all of humanity is a struggle for you.

Regardless, it all changes with habit. I’d like to add a word to Aristotle’s quote. “You are what you repeatedly do NOW.”

It’s time we stop focusing on what we didn’t get or didn’t do “right” and embrace the realization that now is the only time to create a new habit of humanity for ourselves.

Now is the time to know that our excellence already exists. It’s simply waiting patiently for us to create the corresponding habit to welcome it in.
