Tarot: Gigi Miner's Ethyrial Tarot
Practice

Do you know someone to whom everything seems to come easily? Do they annoy you? Many of us have our talents and abilities. When something is natural, it seems to be easier to learn it than if we are pursuing something that does not quite fit. Still, we can look at other people and wonder how it is that they seem to have no difficulties in pursing nearly anything that they wish.

Our card this month is the Eight of Pentacles. We see a piano keyboard with the pentacles arranged. The phrase, “practice makes perfect” comes to mind. If any of you have played an instrument, you know that you cannot make any acceptable sounds unless you first learn the instrument and then practice. Practice means that you are going to do the same thing over and over again until it becomes easier for you. This does not mean that everything that you practice will eventually become effortless. Some things in life just never seem to get that simple for many of us.
It is a difficult thing to admit that there is something that you cannot do or for which you do not have a talent. Even worse is when you use to be able to do something well and that ability has left you. We are dealing with pentacles. Pentacles can be associated with health, money, anything in the physical world. How many of us used to be able to play sports and well? Considering the many things that happen to a person as they age, some of us may find that we can no longer excel as we once did. This could be true of playing an instrument.
I used to play guitar. With time and physical limitations, I found that I could no longer play. I was devastated. Now, had I spent more time practicing, I might have allayed that impending loss of ability. I do not doubt that it would have come eventually, but perhaps by practicing more, it might have slowed the inevitable. So, too, can it be with our lives.
This column is about the spiritual part of our lives. There are some things that we can let sit by the wayside until we need them. There are other things that require our continual attention if we are to expect them to be ready when we need them. For some people, meditation is an important part of their life. What happens when they fail to meditate on a regular basis? Usually, they will lose touch with that inner voice that guides them. For others, nature may be a soothing factor. When they cannot get near that tree to hug it, their souls seem to wither.
Others of us may be attending college and have the constant barrage of homework that helps us to practice our chosen profession before we ascend into it. It takes work and effort to be good at something. It takes time and patience to learn enough to be able to do the work. As I write this, I find that I am nearly finished with my Ethyrial Tarot © deck. It has taken, literally, years for me to get this far. Now the horizon is in sight and there is an excitement that looms.
Starting anything is difficult. Persevering through the practice stage is often drudgery. Still, when we manage to stick it out long enough, we get that rush that only comes when we approach the apex of our journey. This can be training for a job. It can be battling some health issues. It can even be something as basic as learning to play an instrument. All of our life is filled with learning and practicing. I recall an old adage that says something along the lines of growing old only comes when we stop learning. If you want to learn something, there are plenty of opportunities available. You can learn to make pottery. You can learn tarot. You can learn how to sit in silence and hear the birdsong. You can learn how to be kind to others. I could go on and on.
One of the best ways to determine what it is that we might want to learn is to figure out what we like to do. We might think that this is common sense, but common sense is an uncommon thing. The best training for us as far as subject matter is lying in our minds and hearts in the areas that bring us joy. Think about it. This is not the harsh taskmaster that made us drill scales on the piano. This is us, taking a piece of our life and saying, “Yes, I like to do that” and then pursing that goal. We have enough things in our lives that are “forced” upon us, or so they seem. We have plenty of responsibilities that weigh us down. Instead of considering all of the things that we HAVE to do, why not find a few things that we WANT to do?
Each of us needs something in our lives that gives us pleasure. Pentacles could easily represent pleasure, given their physical nature. What gives you pleasure? What do you like to do that might require a little bit of learning as well? Some people enjoy knitting. For them, learning to read a knitting pattern and to do the various stitches would be fun. Other people might enjoy gardening. Learning about your area and what plants might do well is enjoyable.
We all need to have some fun in life. Using the excuse that we are just too busy is only going to leave us with more excuses and nothing for which to live. Sometimes we have to take our pleasure by force. We have to decide that we deserve a few moments of respite. There is nothing wrong with enjoying some time doing something that you love. Learning can be a wonderful part of those moments.
I am hearing a song in my head from Camelot, “The Lusty Month of May”. The song depicts this feeling of doing something just because it feels good. We all have enough in our lives that calls us to task. Let us take some time during this month to find those things that give us pleasure and make us happy. It really is okay to be happy and to enjoy yourself. In fact, your challenge this month is to practice being happy and feeling pleasure. Is it any wonder why my students enjoy my classes?

Gigi Miner is a minister, ordained by the Universal Life Church, and has a Doctorate of Motivation from the same.
“One of the greatest benefits of Tarot is being able to take control of your life rather then be a victim of it,” is the motto of this professional Tarot consultant, author, and teacher, from upstate New York.
Moonlighting as an adult education instructor, Gigi brings that experience into her Tarot and writing work, helping clients and readers to find their own inner wisdom. Gigi has taught classes on tarot in regular and e-formats.
Believing that "laughter is the best medicine,” there is often a lighter tone to her teachings. When conducting an adult-education class, one of the main questions she asks is, "Are you having fun?” If the answer is "yes" then she knows that her students are learning more then if she were teaching in a more traditional mode.
Gigi has written articles for various newsletters, including Tarot Celebrations, World Tarot Network, and Gateway to Tarot. She has released a book entitled, “Light-of-Day Tarot & Dream Work,” which is available at www.lulu.com/ladyfogg.
Her two novels, "Card Shark" & "The Fallen" are available at all online bookstores or by visiting:
