Divination Systems: Be Your Oracle
Oh, Those Cards
by James Wanless, Ph.D |

It is said, "the cards never lie." And I know why. They represent universal qualities that are true of all human beings all of the time. Tarot is a "spiritual psychology" in that every facedown card you choose was picked by you in trust from the mystery of the unknown, and each card is a symbolic mirror of yourself. Used this way, Tarot reminds you who you are and even offers advice for situations that problematic.
Recently, on my "aloha tarotha" retreat in Hawaii, the card I picked for the entire week as a guiding message was Death. So many folks are afraid of doing the Tarot for that very reason, the Death card. Now the Death card comes up all the time in our Readings, and we just don't go out and croak (most of the time, that is). So, Death is about change, releasing, liberating, a rebirth of some kind.
Here I am leading this group in paradise and saying to myself, "Why the Death card?" It was all about letting go of those parts of the program that I couldn't control and manage. On a deeper level, it meant being perfectly equanimous and accepting of that. The Death card on our group altar kept staring me in the face and telling me to relax and accept. In fact, I had the most rejuvenating week, a time of special transcendent joy! Indeed, "the dead can dance" and find fulfillment to the bones.
What a great coach are the cards and all in the palm of your hand. The Tarot coach, however, doesn't pull any punches. For the second day of the retreat, I chose the Disappointment card. "Oh, those cards!" Does this mean there will be disappointment? Probably, but why is that? Because we all get emotionally attached to certain expectations. Sometimes those expectations are not met and then we may spiral into disappointment which can lead to anger, sorrow, depression, on and on. The Disappointment card was telling me to let go of my great expectations. Once again, Death reared its wise head reminding me to just let go of what my mind and ego would like and simply be happy with what is.
Sure enough, I experienced an acute disappointment. On the big island of Hawaii where we retreated, the lava was flowing heavily into the sea as the volcano there had re-ignited and rebirthed itself. I have seen this once before in Hawaii many years ago. So, I was all charged up to take everyone out to the flow and witness the creation of land when lava fire and water meet and explode! We all walk out to the area at night under the fabulous pacific stars to see this marvel of life, but the authorities had fenced off the area so that we could hardly see the actual lava falling into the ocean.
I was mightly bummed out! But you know, I kept looking at that distant lava and was hypnotized by its red liquid fire glow that breathed and circled and flashed. In time, I was happy, very thankful and content. The lesson: Stay in the now. Look as if for the first time with the beginner's mind and wow consciousness. Disappointment resides in our memory, not in the present. Let the memory bank die, oh death you are so wise.
