Creating Bridges: Spirituality & Philosophy:
Wisdom Walks In Circles:

Earth Diver

by Margaret Lewis
While driving to Serpent Mound on the Spring Equinox, I witnessed the renewal of life in the far reaches of river flooding. There were moments, as I crossed a very swollen Walnut Creek and witnessed nearby road closures, that I wondered if I would complete the journey. Paint Creek and the Scioto River were also threatening the roadways with rising waters.

Although cause for concern had my attention, the beauty and majesty of nature’s way held me spellbound. I witnessed mythology made manifest as echoes of an ancient story dogged my trail. Most Native American tribes share similar versions of the creation story called, The Earth Diver.

The myth says that in the beginning there was only water. The lands of the earth were created by a tiny bit of mud brought up from the bottom of primeval waters by an animal diver. For the ancient Moundbuilders of Ohio, that animal diver is most often perceived as the Shoveler Duck, our mallard.

I looked to the hills of Southern Ohio, rising out of the surrounding waters and marveled as the myth took form. Archeological experts believe that conical-shaped mounds surrounded by circular mounds were created to represent the earth diver myth of creation. The mound within a circular enclosure defines the space between primeval waters and dry land. The myth began its work on me, weaving together the imagery of flooding rivers, rising hills, mounds, and the earth diver story of creation. I kept watching and wondering.

Sacred Serpent Pools

Upon arrival at the Serpent Mound I took my ritual walk around the great snake and was delighted to find several pools of water in the depressions within the mound’s coils. Again, the earth diver was with me. Land masses are defined by the waters that surround them, and certain places on the mound felt so alive while outlined by the freshness of these waters.

After our Spring Equinox ceremony, I sat by each of the serpent’s pools of rainwater, breathing in all the images until I could no longer see them. Pure rainwater held in bowls around the serpent body took me deep into the reflection of the trees, clouds and sky imagery mirrored by the waters. I melded with the water’s peaceful reflection. The mound spoke of the season of spring’s aspect of renewal, when all of creation feels reborn.

As I sat in meditation, I heard my inner voice say that the human pineal gland is like the earth diver myth. I rolled this idea over and over in my thoughts. Although I couldn’t comprehend its meaning, I held onto the idea. Days later, the meaning began to rise to the surface of my mind. Revelation is often found while doing the laundry.

Pineal Gland

While folding a load of towels, I reflected on an online course meditation I wrote that involved the pineal gland. I searched my notebooks for information and sat dumbfounded. Sometimes we forget what we already know. Socrates said all learning is a process of remembering, and I felt a socratic moment passing before me.

The pineal gland is a cone shaped pea that sits on the roof of the third ventricle of the brain behind the roof of the nose. This gland floats in a lake of cerebrospinal fluid. It’s a cone shaped mound in the middle of water! The pineal gland is the first aspect to form in the fetus. Could this be the earth diver creation myth made manifest within the human body?

Known by mystics as the oracle of light, the pineal is often referred to as our third eye, and the inner compass. This exceptional gland secrets a substance called DMT at our birth and death. DMT is also found in sacred plants used by shamans to enhance their visionary states. When the pineal gland is stimulated it produces DMT that enables us to alter consciousness and enter the spirit realm.

DMT activates certain receptors in the brain that leads to the stimulation of DNA. This causes DNA to emit visual information in the form of photons, which are the waves of light experienced as visions. Visionaries see with the Big Eye, that which sees at the microscopic level, what the ancients termed the realm of invisible spirits.

If the ancient moundbuilders were able to see at the molecular level, did they know of the pineal gland? Life begins as the pineal arises like a mound out of the retreating flood waters of the primordial womb-sea. Were they intentional about reflecting this truth in the form of their moundbuilding? Could this be the underlying message of the Earth Diver Myth?

From Head to Heart

Last month’s column took me deeply into the heart, and this month I felt the calling of the mind. Is life’s true path the process of growing out of the workings of the mind and into the feeling of the heart?

With the spring equinox, I witnessed the beginnings, the renewal, the creation myth played out on the flood plains of southern Ohio. Some say the seat of the soul is the pineal gland and others say it is the heart. It all begins with the head, as the great Egyptian scholar, R.A Schwaller de Lubicz instructs on the meaning of the Temple of Luxor. He says the ancient Egyptians believed that the crown of the skull is the basis of all becoming, where a body will be provided for an animating spirit.

Where do all great visions come home to roost? Where is the underlying river of consciousness leading as it flows over its banks? Is it taking us to a land of renewal within the fertile ground of the heart? This must be the water’s path to higher awareness. For the heart is fecund soil where visionary seeds of the pineal take root and bloom.
